From making sandwiches for needy children to having an older and wiser view of life, this report asks whether they are now coming of age.
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of gang membership per had of population in the world. They have forged a reputation for violence and illegal activities, but many now represent changing times. "We are not exactly the pillars of society. We understand that", explains Jamie Pink, leader of the Tribal Huk gang. But now, a new initiative by gang members is seeing them make and deliver free sandwiches children who would otherwise go without. "It gives you a reason to get up the next day", explains Pink. And while it will be hard to shake off their anti-social image, many like school principal Maria Hamill are starting to come round to the idea: "I think actions speak louder than words."

You all should be so proud with what you are doing for these kids who would go hungry. • "Actions speak louder than words". So so true. I got tears in my eyes seeing truly tough men and women that have been around the block a few times, making sure kids have food in their bellies. Not into the gang mentality but I fully understand the social and economic reasons behind their formation and I salute these guys with respect. I am not naive to the knowledge that this gang would indeed partake in other gang "duties", mentality and behaviours but that does not take away the good they are doing in their communities and their effort in reaching out towards better things for themselves and the people around them. Gang behaviour is usually associated with poverty so to me the answers lay in the system that creates these conditions.

  • I use to starve in school. My parents were awful with money and I would go and scab all the other kids. It was hard and it got even worse when my two baby sisters were born(I love them). I think the problem with these kids comes from parents not being able to budget and run an efficient economy at home. It only takes a few changes in spending from the parents to prevent this. But its such a difficult issue to tackle if you are not motivated. Especially if you have a crap job.

Their families had big flat screen TVs with the newest game console and every new release movie as well as nicer cars. Everything my parents owned was old as fuck, our TV was one where you turn the knob to change channels but we had fuck loads of food

  • I'm Australian and this really touched me. It's all about the kids, to be honest. Regardless of what the adults' background is, the kids in this video are the ones that matter most. They are the innocent souls, growing into men and women. That being said, the adults seem like really level-headed people, in the real world. It's a god eat dog world, so I understand the situation.

    • MR JACKSON True the P dealers know what they'll get if they don't leave so they're gone, some were helped out and a few put up a struggle. There were reports of people witnessing 1 dealer being beaten up on the side of a highway too. Then Jamies truck was shot up and he lost an eye but apparently they got them all out.

    • Frank White I know for a fact gangsters will remove rival drug houses from their territory. But themselves will continue to sell drugs. Small towns are probably where all come from, small towns don't make much money for drugs. It's the larger cities where they make millions. Tell me where does the money come from??? Selling drugs and not from selling stolen property. I know for a fact all major Gangs are in the meth business here in Auckland. Look at all the raids that are linked to gangs and what they are in possession with. It's in black and white literally.

  • Good hearted people, just what we need to teach our future generation how to look after our own. Best of 2022 to you and your family and extended family. Shame I had not seen this documentary on good ol NZ tv, then some of the nation would be inspired by this. When I was a nipper in the uk, some dinosaur's ago gangs would look after there patch and the people within, same mentality here, can gangs live within the community? YES. All good to have gangs as long as their conflict stays within them, that's when the big man steps in and sorts it out, if it's outside influence try not to involve the innocents, some time's society push's these people towards the gangs, some see them as family and a purpose, the violence has always been there, these BEUTIFUL PEOPLE are changing the mentality.

  • I knew a couple that lost their son to a school fight and their son hit his head from a punch and they actually went to court and asked the judge not see that everyone was in the court room because of a tragedy and if he could not send the boy to jail and he could help at their property on the weekends and for as long as the judge felt necessary. Then he sat quite and as he looked up at the parents of the boy who died he had tears in his eyes and said he had never felt the feeling that was all through the court room. He said he would leave it to the parents how long they would need help. Then they started growing fruit trees and planting them in parks close to schools so if any child was hungry they could always go and get something to eat. The boy stayed close by the parents house and every weekend for the 15yrs I lived in that area he would go and pot trees. The sad thing I have heard from volunteers is the council want plant fruit trees because the government here thinks homeless people and kids shouldn’t be able to get free food and if they can’t work to earn money why should they get things free? We need to see people as people not race or religion and realise humanity is being led by our government when it’s humanity that chose the people to help the people and countries grow and stop kids homeless elderly and families wondering if and when they aren’t able to have food on their tables and stop filling the pockets of people that really don’t care or probably need it. I think all of the people involved in the sandwich club are both selfless and honourable your story touched my heart thanks for sharing. I hope the story I shared reaches the hearts of people that have the resources and friends to make a change in someone’s life or many lives thanks to who reads my story

    @darrensice1550@darrensice15505 жыл бұрын
    • The government keeps people frrom thriving. We need communities to help and support each other. Community farming to make sure everyone gets fed. Making sure people have a home. Education in smaller classrooms as the communities will be smaller to support people. Trading/barter rather than money is the solution. For example: teacher you educate our children and we'll give you food water and electricity. Electrician, you help our homes, we'll give you food water and electricity. Chef, you make our meals and we'll give you food water and electricity. Etc, etc. That way we dont have to pay for things and we get the basics as our right. We dont have to work souless and joy crushing jobs just to survive because our basic needs our covered. Now, for a homeless person it can seem a bit tricky if they dont work. Easy, hey homeless person we see you're struggling, so let us help you with giving food, water and electricity (and a home) and try to help improve your life. Because sometimes, a homeless person just needs help and hope.
