For the third straight year, the city Oakland marked a grim milestone: more than 100 murders. We spent a day with an OPD homicide investigator as the department and the city grapple with another deadly year.

You don't choose where you serve. You get posted up in the highest crime neighborhoods because they are always low on staff. THEN if you work hard and diligently you may get promoted to a lower crime neighborhood with those who excel being sent to the Mayors neighborhood.

The conviction rate for homicide in Oakland is very low compared to the rest of bay. Very low..

I worked for the oakland police department for 17 years as a undercover narcotics agent and I will say the oakland police department sure has some hard working officers most of the officers you seen on duty have been on overtime for like as long as they started and they routinely place officers on other assignments such as gang investigations into homicide investigations due to how short staffed the OPD is but I will say during my 17 years of serving the community of oakland I will say this the oakland police department works very hard

111 so far this year? That's over 10 per month. Last year, it was 100 murders, which is 1 every 3 - 4 days.

I remember when I was a pre teen in the early 2000's Oakland was having 300+ murders a year.
It was only 280 last year and they don't count unless you are white.
