Well unfortunately the VW has broken. What broke exactly, we are not sure, but the sound is bad enough that I want to tow it down to my shop and diagnose it before it gets driven. So I used the trusty ol 300TD and towed it down.

When you tow and have the ignition on to unlock the steering wheel, unplug the 12 volt lead off of the ignition coil. Keeps it or the points from burning up.

@7:10 Well, a natural OM617 *can* definitely tow. I onced towed a VW LT van through half a night... with the van in gear. We were a bunch of guys losely connected by our love for old cars, particularly w123, and a common mechanic. One of the guys had asked the mechanic, "hey, what's in this drum"? and the mech said "oh, thats just used fluids." - "You think this stuff will burn?" - "Probably... but don't be greedy, it has been sitting open for a while, so there might be some water at the bottom." Well, as was found out two kilometres later there was water. Several attempts to empty the tank had failed because you could'nt get a hose to the lowest part of the tankl because of weird filler tube shape. You also couldn't easily access the tank itself, to drop it, nor could you get to the underside of the tank where the fuel hose leaves. Solution: get the water out of the system via the engine. After all, the cylinders should be warm enough from compression alone to ensure instant vaporisation. What could possibly go wrong? After frying one battery it was decided that a different approach had to be taken. Also, the evening came closer, and we wanted to go clubbing. Solution: Get a rope, hook the VW LT up to the only available diesel (which was my 300d), put the van in gear and set off. After a few trips back and fourth through Berlin between restaurant and different clubs the van suddenly showed signs of life... And at no point did the OM617 seem stressed. It may only have 88 horses, but if you look at the power/torque diagram, you see that it has no reals torque curve, it's more or less a flat line parallel to the diagram's x-axis. I had to use so little throttle that the automatic even shifted into 4th gear at city speeds.

Simply a bad exhaust gasket but would mimic same sound as a broken rocker. Hence why I towed it
