062912 DOUBLE FATAL CRASH-WOMAN CHARGED WITH INTOXICATION MANSLAUGHTER AFTER WRONG WAY CRASH

Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers was finally able to notify the parents of the second fatal victim in Friday morning's head-on crash on Interstate 45 at SH 242. The passenger who was in the right rear passenger seat has been identified as TRAVIS RYAN SAUNDERS, 18, OF HOUSTON. Saunders, like Adams, were both pronounced dead on the scene and David Porras was transported to Memorial Herman in critical but stable condition.
The intoxicated driver that struck then head-on was driving northbound in the southbound lanes was intoxicated at the time of the crash. She has been booked into the Montgomery County Jail on two charges of intoxicated manslaughter and one count of intoxicated assault. It is reported this evening that even though drinking establishments close at 2 am her blood alcohol was more than twice the legal limit an hour later when she crashed.
I was slammed into by a drunk driver who was fleeing the scene after hitting two cars at a bar. He fled the scene after hitting me, but was later caught. I am permanently disabled with limited use and chronic pain of my right arm. I have zero sympathy for those who drink and drive. Especially where Uber or Lyft is available. My prayers go out to the victims of this senseless tragedy.🙏🏻
Bless you and I feel so sad for you! I hate to even have to put it this way, but you are here! You can tell the world about it and I hope you do! Speak for those who can't any longer. I strongly believe the manner of death or injury is not different than if someone pulls a trigger. Driving drunk is a willful act because we start sober! Getting drunk and driving a vehicle is as willful as pulling a trigger while pointing at human beings. Yet we are so easy on drivers, especially when they are young people. Ask the dead if it matters who killed them! The life they cherished ended....gone forever. Their families will never see them again.....
Don’t blame you at all, I drove drunk and it’s the most ignorant, selfish, irresponsible thing anyone can do it’s murder in my eyes if you hit and kill someone and at minimum attempted manslaughter of you injure someone like yourself.
I had a drunk driver rear-end me. I was going the speed limit is 40, she was going at least 70. Luckily I only strained my back and neck, she did $13,000 in damage to my truck. Totaled her car, she didn't know she was in an accident. Of course she was driving without insurance, so my insurance rate went up. No sympathy for drunk drivers. Sorry to hear that you are permanently disabled. My heart goes out to families who lost a loved one and the ones who were injured.
there always were taxis.....alcohol a DRUG that kills more people than any other drug directly or indirectly. Society should see it as a DRUG and not something you just drink to feel good. It's a very dangerous drug and also causes cancer. I'm soory for what you have experience and I hope by some miracle you fully recover
I'm very sorry to hear that but you do not need to be permanently disabled! We're energy beings so we can heal just as the drunk can!
I knew of a guy in our college department that got drunk, snorted coke, smoked dope and tried to drive home. He ran a red light and killed a mother and her two kids. They gave him life in prison. That was in the early 80s, a completely just sentence.

@@allang3541 Life usually means after 25 years you're eligible for parole but that doesn't mean you'll get let out. If the courts still find you unfit to return to society they'll keep you locked up indefinitely. Hence the term 25 to life.
There's no excuse to lighten the sentence of something like this. It's murder. Some could even say premeditated because they willingly got behind the wheel intoxicated knowingly the possible outcome.

Sooner or later that single bullet will be fired killing some one. Don’t do the behaviour and someone would not have died. It is intentional.

I don't know where you live, but the US places almost no priority on actually stopping people who are "banned" from driving, and indeed, it is quite common (in the US) for people who are "banned" from driving to be granted exceptions to drive to work, to college, to church, to buy groceries, _etc._ In much of the US ordinary everyday life is pretty much impossible without the ability to drive, so _true_ bans on driving are not typical, and even then whatever restriction is given by the courts is commonly flouted and not effectively enforced. Whereas in the UK if you are banned from driving, you'd better not be seen behind the wheel of a vehicle, full stop!
@@pulaski1 The thing about not having a license for life is anyone can keep an eye on them and call every time they see them driving. We had seven neighbors living in one house and none of them had a drivers license. I would call every time I seen them driving and I even installed 4K cameras so I would have video for the police and the courts each time. One by one they went to prison or died and now all of them are gone and have been for years plus the neighborhood is much better now. The county even came in and tore the house down then sold the land for back taxes.

But someone driving without a license _might have a gun._ I would be cautious about calling the police on a neighbor, especially one I didn't like or trust, as it is not unheard of for a dispute between neighbors to escalate into a shooting. Such shootings can equally involve a legally acquired gun (where there has been a background check), or one acquired by someone who would not pass a backgrounds check. It is perfectly legal to acquire a gun in a private sale, so long as the seller didn't acquire it with the intention of selling it to someone who couldn't pass a background check.
Driving a car after drinking, and killing someone because of that should be considered premeditated homicide. Even wasted drunks know they shouldn't drive, but they make the choice to do it anyway. Nobody forces them to drink, they chose to do it! Serving only 3 years of a five year sentence, or similar allowances for "good behavior" are unacceptable. Such a slap on the wrist for taking someone's life by driving while intoxicated is not just wrong, it's absurdly wrong and criminal itself!!!!!

My neighbor lost his son to a drunk driver who killed him when he crossed the median. The son had just graduated med school too. What a tragedy! The drunk driver was sentenced to 5 years in prison for the murder but nothing will ever bring the man's son back.

Not necessarily all that drunk. Many completely sober people have wound up on the wrong side of a 4-lane highway at night, especially elderly people who can't see all that well and get confused. Advice to drive in the right hand lane, especially after dark, is sound advice.
@@cll1639 I agree, some of the on/off ramps can be very tricky if you aren't paying close attention. I'm not sure exactly why but it seems that they are purposely designing them that way.

Once again the drunk lives. We need tougher laws for those who drink and drive and for those who kill someone. It should be intentional murder. You get in a car drunk, you have to know there is a possibility of killing someone. Jail her for rest of her life. I almost lost my life to a drunk driver who also walked away with a scratch. He fled the state and yet to be punished.

Where I live, a drunk driver killed a woman and the only thing he kept saying was he had a scratch on his hand that he needed paramedics to do something about it. He knew he killed someone and didn't care. Courts need to send drunk drivers to prison
A drunk in a SUV ran a red light in my town on a Saturday afternoon. He T-boned a car, killing the woman driver. His kids were not buckled in and were ejected on to the street. As bystanders rushed to give first aid to the kids and the driver, the drunk stumbled around the scene, angrily ranting “Now I have to get new car!” He never looked at his kids, the car he hit, or the dying woman. A news article said it was his 5th DUI arrest (and second crash) in three years. He had major political connections, so his trial was delayed for three years, apparently hoping people would forget. He didn’t get jail or lose his license. He never expressed regret, but issued statement at his trial, promising to “do better.” I kept track because the woman killed was a coworker, and ironically, three other coworkers were at the intersection when the crash occurred. They were giving the kids and our coworker first aid. A news report showed him getting in a care and driving away from the courthouse.
In Saudi Arabia a drunk driver was executed for killing six family members in an accident.Too harsh punishment maybe but that driver will never drive drunk again.

I was 18 myself when I was hit head on by a drunk driver. I woke up days later in the hospital. Considering my injuries I was very lucky I survived. The drunk was the one who died. Not only was there alcohol in her system but she also had drugs as well. Someone else's bad decisions changed my life and not in a good way. Even if the innocent person lives sometimes they suffer the consequences the rest of their life. I guess I could be happy the drunk died because of what I went through after the accident but she left behind a little girl. A little girl who lost her mother because of a stupid choice. It's tragic because she will live with that all her life.

I have a possible solution to this. Been saying this for years as I've seen too many drunken fatals. They need to make it a law that when you go into an bar, you have to surrender your keys and blow in a breathalyzer before leave. Couple that with spike strips that deploy when someone enters the off the ramp to a highway from the direction to pop tires.
You are so right. This is one area where my civil liberties can be set aside. I could not live with myself if my dumb decision killed someone.
Also automatic minimum 10 year sentence and additional 10 minimum if multiple fatalities to run consecutively. I say minimum only because proving intent has always been the hurdle.
Who's going to pay for those spike strips to be purchased and installed and maintained on every off ramp of every highway in the country? Deterrence is the solution. 25 years for the first DUI, life without parole for the next. No plea bargains, no trials...... if you tested about the limit, you're guilty.
An old Army sergeant taught me how to do the math years ago to ensure I didn't go over the limit: limit your drinks to zero if you're driving, and you're good to go. Even with one drink, you'll spend the rest of your life wondering if you could have somehow avoided *that* accident. With zero drinks, you'll know you did your best.

The state could word it so its not a requirement but make the liability so high that they wont be able to let people leave drunk. I am very right wing to & generally side with liberty, but I dont see this as any more of a violation than the implied consent laws. Its not a warrantless search, not a free speech or 2nd amendment issue. I dont see much wiggle room to fight this. But then you have to deal with the lobbyists those are the people with the power in our government.

My mother was involved in a highway collision. Two people also died. My mother was ejected through the windscreen. She lived. She spent months in the hospital. She recovered with some facial scars and other perminant injuries. It was very hard on our family. The one who caused the collision was drunk. He died. He had a wife and 3 children. Very sad. Lots of people suffered for his actions.

@@STITCHWA The accident occurred in 1975 people rarely used their seat belts in those days. There wasn't a big push for safety in those days. There weren't billboards saying click it or ticket like we have today. Also being caught for driving under the influence of alcohol was a minor infraction so many were prone to doing it more often than today. My mother was sober.

This happened in 2013. Nicole Bakus was sentenced to 38 years. She has appealed twice and been denied. She is appealing again cause new video came out that shows her after the accident standing still and claims that her drinks were spiked even tho the bar gave a receipt that showed she drank 20 drinks in 3 hours.

Holy cow, as an ex bartender I was strict with my customers I would have never served that many drinks to one person! I also had access to a tow truck driver that was a blessing to help out. I would simply grab the customers keys and call him. I didn't have to worry about anyone having their lives ruined when I woke up. The intoxicated driver should be sentenced to LWOP, there was absolutely no excuse for her actions. This case may be pled down to reduce her jail time.

Life without parole? What a ridiculous suggestion. We already have to many laws in this country, and the sentencing is already to harsh. We have more people in prison, serving longer sentences than anywhere else in the world. And you want more? That's a ridiculous notion, because it's blatantly OBVIOUS that it doesn't work! All it does is appease a few people's vindictive revenge for what occurred. A vehicle accident is just that. An accident. Show me one convicted drunk driver who wanted to intentionally kill other innocent people in a crash, and I'll agree those people deserve a life sentence. But, you won't find them.
She got 38 years. She was served 21 drinks at the bar she was at. The bar had their license suspended and got sued for $1M.

@@lisaoliver8023 if she's been 9 yrs in prison, according how the prison system works she has served 18 yrs, days and nights count. So she can be paroled sometime soon. I know this because my cousin is in prison for his 5th dwi, he didn't killed anyone luckily, got 4 yrs and said that each day counts double for them. Anyways, she's been locked up long enough and should be given a 2nd chance.

I also have zero tolerance for drunk drivers. I come from a family where it's "the thing" to drink and be drunk. On his 18th b'day my nephew got a bottle of whiskey and a case of beer. I love my nephew and felt bad for him as it was stupid what he did but I entirely support the sentence he got from New York State. He was 19 and got picked up for drunk driving. His BAC was so high that he was automatically charged with aggravated DWI. If he has another DWI it'll be a felony. My family's response? Poor K, how do we get him off? I think zero tolerance is the only way to really change attitudes toward drunk driving.

When I was young around 7 years old, two friends who were brother and sister were killed by an intoxicated driver. That drivers passenger was also killed. 3 people were killed and he only served less than 6 months.
I am glad they stacked her sentence. 38 years gives you a lot of time to think about what you did. Hopefully, she never gets paroled.

It's crazy to think of how a bad decision can change the lives of so many in the blink of an eye. All of them were going about their lives and now 2 young victims are gone without even seeing it coming and her life is forever changed as she is gonna have to serve hard time. Wow I didn't read the discription and thought this was another Nicole Baukas type situation. Thankful this is THAT story and not a new one. What a nightmare for those families.
Yet we still sell alcohol. We don't sell other drugs for recreational use... except for a few states. We just say "that's horrible" and go on till we see it again.... and repeat
We tried prohibition a century ago. It didn't work out so well.
@kepler240 what do you suggest? Stopping the sale of alcohol? As the other poster mentioned, prohibition didn't work. People kept on drinking as before except now they were criminals. The "no alcohol" laws spawned a huge nation wide black market with powerful criminal organizations which just like the narcos in Mexico started killing each other as well as lawmen and lawmakers. The government lost out on gazillions in tax revenue and so did the markets, restaurants, clubs etc. If they tried it again it wouldn't work again except now on a collosal scale! Any other ideas?

Drinking and driving is a felony, people you better think before you drive because you could wake up to a tragedy. Just really very sad people had to die because of someone else's bad decision's.
My little housekeeper lost her 16 year old son to a drunk driver. But she is not bitter and is the best friend I have ever had. If keys were held by bar owners, a lot of this would be prevented.
Appalling how many drunk driving deaths, especially wrong way, have happened in the stretch of 45 from Spring through The Woodlands.

My sister was killed by a drunk driver and I have absolutely no tolerance for them! He got 4 1/2 yrs to 11yrs, out in 5 yrs., I will never see my sister again until we meet in heaven.

The driver got sentenced to 40 years and, strangely enough, believe that the cops set her up to be convicted.
She wanted to go to trial, which the state did, defendant switched her plea to guilty about 3 days into the trial.

Yes because officers forced her to drink, than forced her to drive her own car on the wrong side of the freeway, and forced her to smash into these people. Blaming everyone but her own damn self. Typical.

My sympathy goes out to the families of the two departed ones who passed away tragically in this accident that should of never happened. All because of a careless driver woman who drove the wrong way while being intoxicated.
Back in 1960's in a little town in Indiana Lowell Indiana. Six kids were driving home from a football game. Six died that night hit at an intersection was tebowed by drunk driver who had graduated from law a few years before. I was still in high school it was one of the saddest times I remember and going to five funerals it was terrible.

In my Junior and Senior year I work for a Veterinarian where I lived. I got into the Emergency Fire and EMS Service after getting out of the Marines and a few years later the Veterinarian I use to work for was working and his family were up north in Minnesota visiting relatives while he was in Florida. While his wife and two children were driving somewhere a drunk driver hit them head-on killing all three. According to reports they were alive but the car burst into flames and no one was able to get them out due to the fire and they burn to death. The drunk driver got a year probation and he had two prior DUIs. How can you justify a sentence like that?
😭😭😭 horrible. Prior DUI and now only gets a slap on wrist. Life sentence if someone dies should be punishment period.
I lost a close friend due to a drunk driver and he was even speeding. She died and the drunk driver only had a scratch. She was going to her brothers birthday party. It happened one day before my birthday. Anyone who drives drunk should get the death sentence that is what the victim got. With no chance of a appeal.
I’ve known of too many people who’ve died at the hands of a drunk driver including a husband , wife and her two sisters. She was killed by the golf instructor who was teaching her how to play so she could play with her husband. His kids stated their father was a good man. Not like him to drive after drinking. Too late now.

You would think we would have check-in points in bars. You only get your keys back after a breathalyzer that says you are under the legal limit. It wouldn't stop all drunk driving, but it would stop alot. I mean, we have people going to bars to drink, and then let them (after they are drunk) make the decision as to whether or not they are sober enough to drive. NO!

(DWK's) Drunks who've killed need to do the walk of shame and teaching. They need to be forced to visit all the high schools and colleges around the state their imprisoned in with handcuff chains and in P-uniform to teach the next generation that they need to break this outdated dangerous social habit.

Lost my twin brother and a 8yr old niece and 6 yr old nephew in a head on when a wheel fell off a truck and it suddenly crossed and hit. Your kind of in shock for a month. Every day you wake up and remember and your heart sinks..

Because in a wreck,, a drunk person is less likely to be killed because they don't tense up expecting the impact.. Sober people will auto tense up worsening their injuries..
One reason, it's believed that while in a state of intoxication the person has several effects from the alcohol. 1. A slower reaction time. 2. An inability to have normal sympathetic and parasympathetic central neurvous system responses. Such as when a person who become suddenly aware of impending personal injuries the fight, fright, flight central neurvous system responses causes an immediate extreme tension of motor skills, muscles, ligaments, veins, capillaries and arteries. These physical responses then once high velocity impact occurs; explosion of all or many of the physical makeups of organs, muscles as well as chemical releases can cause tearing of many of the human body systems. Including the chest cavity, heart, lungs etc. The accident victim(s) are highly susceptible to great Blood loss from multiple places. Then add injury to the spinal cord and or the Brain. Last is the person through said impact may or may not be restrained by use of seatbelts allowing for individuals to collide with one another, or to strike parts of the vehicle or be thrown inside the vehicle. Last would to be ejected from the vehicle itself. The intoxicated person being in an alcohol induced relaxation as well as a lack or reduced tensing up just prior to impact along with not even being aware of the impending collision can and does occur often. But not always. More often than not, if the intoxicated driver is injured, it usually ( but not always ) is from either suffering a sternum injury ( airbags have greatly reduced drivers from suffering steering wheel impalements, or the striking of the interior windshield ) occurs from either being elected from the vehicle, or becoming entangled with a seatbelt and the vehicle catching fire. I was a Truck Lieutenant assigned to both a ladder truck with my main responsibility as the officer in charge of as the Rescue Truck Lieutenant. Using cribbage, come alongs and the Hurst Tool as well being an EMT. So, I have seen this phenomenon happen.

If someone drives to a bar it is safe to say they are driving away from the same bar. These bar patrons should be brought to a bar by some other means. If you feel you are above getting a ride TO a bar then stay home. Mandatory life sentences for drunk drivers. RIP to the victims.
It's up to us to get our government to pass a law to put an end to this.

For people that will be reading this in the future. In Texas it's now legal to sell liquor at Drive Thru windows all over the state. You can roll into Chilis (for instance) and get a gallon of Margaritas. I don't know what kind of brainiacs in Austin thought this might be a good idea. Not saying Drive Thru bought liquor caused this accident ... but it doesn't help the state's argument that it wants to reduce accidents like this one.
This incident happened over 9 years ago. The female wrong way DUI driver was sentenced to 38 years in prison. The bar where she got intoxicated had to pay a $1M settlement to the lone surviving victim and the deceased victim's estate.

Not always. It is just that those are the cases that resonate with us and stick in our minds. There is a comment above by someone who was hit by a drunk. He lived, the drunk died.

@@pulaski1 on a cops dash cam it shows her wearing her white tennis shoes as he arrives to the scene, but then later found stuffed in the floorboard on driver's side after(as if they were planted). A witness on scene had stated that she was the passenger but did not see a driver?
@@kolachepapi4621 That doesn't sound like a very reliable witness, but if you were a driver who had caused a fatal accident, and weren't injured, it might not be a bad strategy to climb across the center console and be seen emerging from the passenger door. It won't take much to debunk that version of events, but at least it will muddy the waters a bit.

You can tell on the cops face that its bothering her or him, can't tell , its a tough job being a highway patrol officer and very under appreciated for the tragedies that they have to deal with, must be heart wrenching.
