The 46th anniversary of the doomed yet successful Apollo 13 mission is upon us. On April 11, 1970 is when there mission launched from Cape Canaveral FL. I treat myself and share with you the 1/144 scale Saturn V rocket from Bandai Tamashii Nations. Its a beautiful piece to and to any NASA inspired collection. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I had fun making it!

  • Thank you for showing that astonishing replica. I was six when Apollo 13 launched, and, like millions of other people, willed those three brave astronauts home safely. I should point out, that I'm English, but it was very important to us. One of my earliest memories is to do with Project Apollo: seeing my mother weeping because of the news of the Apollo 1 fire. I was, as you can imagine, at age four, more perturbed by my mother crying, than the deaths of three men far away, but because of that, the names Ed White, Gus Grissom, and Roger Chaffee will always be in my memory. I never watched the movie 'Apollo 13' until recently, as I had no need to. I had watched it for real, and it was all I thought about, to the detriment of everything else, until I knew that Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise were safe. A friend went to The Cape, and asked if I'd like him to bring me back a souvenir. There was one thing, and one thing only: an Apollo 13 Mission patch. I still have it.

  • As a former Hobby Shop owner (Inside & Out Hobbies, LLC est 2005 - ended 2014), I loved it when customers would bring in a finished model of something from the space program. I would put them on display and hold a semi annual model show so they could win prized.....Now all I do is sit back and sell what I have left on E bay.....

  • Hmmm. They didn't give you optional batted F-1 engines. The F-1 engines (first stage) were covered with insulating blankets called "batting." That model features a sweet thrust structure on the S-II. By the way, the conical interstage that connected to the S-IV B fell away with the S-II. Those four white blisters on the interstage were retro rockets that slightly slowed the S-II while ullage motors on the S-IV B pulled the vehicle away as well as seated the LH-2 and LOX fuel components properly. Similarly, the interstage connecting the S-1C and the S-II had four long ullage motors that performed the same function at staging. The first two unmanned Apollo-Saturn V test flights, Apollo 4 and Apollo 6, had 8 ullage motors; these were reduced to four by Apollo 8. The S-1C had 8 retro rockets inside the engine fairings on either side of the fins. Interestingly, the ullage motors on the interstage were eliminated completely on Apollo 15 and the S-1C retros were reduced to 4 to save weight. Upon staging, the S-II's engines burned the S-1C's LOX tank; they were only 40 feet apart. The other 4 retros were restored to the S-1C on Apollos 16 and 17.

  • Japanesee figures have absolutely spoiled me. I have owned a few figuarts from Star Wars and they are brilliant. Seems like most of Bandai offerings are just amazing. As a collector its hard not to appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into all this. And its so well thought-out. LIke every single detail is carefully analyzed to make it work as good as possible. Anyways, thats another brilliant video. I really like how you take time to inspect every single piece and make sure its represented properly in the video. Makes me really want to buy this set. Also, excellent choice of background music.

I've always love Space (sci-fi, fantasy, and non-fiction writings) but this is my first foray into getting something that is based on an actual NASA rocket. Keep up the great work and please show more stuff that's not HT related (which I love too).

    • Danoby2 Also you referred to the Coast Guard Helicopter even though it says NAVY right on the side. SH-3 Sea King is the name of the helicopter BTW. Your other mistake is in continually referring the the S-IVB THIRD STAGE... as the Stage 4B. S-IVB is the name of the THIRD STAGE, it is not the stage four. There is no fourth stage. The name is a holdover from when it was originally designed to be the 4th stage of a different Saturn rocket, the Saturn C-4.

    • When I look it up it goes by the name "Otona no Chogokin Space Shuttle Endeavour". It was $1250, does that seem like a fair price?

  • call me a nitpicker, but.... a few corrections... S-IV-B is not "stage 4". The Saturn V launch vehicle consisted of 3 stages: S-I-C, S-II, S-IV-B ...wherein "S" stands for "Saturn". The "exhaust thrusters" you referred to are F-1 engines, the most powerful single-chamber rocket engines ever flown. The helicopter is a Navy helicopter, not a Coast Guard helicopter. The two dark figures are, I'm pretty sure, supposed to be Navy rescue divers, as the CM hatch was not yet opened. ...and, yes, all 3 Apollo 13 crew members survived to spalshdown, and, as far as I know, two are still alive today.

    • Also, it appears they messed up the helicopter markings. The one they did was from Apollo 11, the helicopter used for recovery of Apollo 13 came from the USS Iwo Jima.

    • newsundies also he said that the rocket was launched from cape Canaveral even though it was in fact launched from a pad on the Kennedy space center.

    • I was going to say the same about the dark figurines. The pressure suits were white ish and in the pictures I have seen they do not take them off. The temperature regulating under suit was light blue I think but def not black. Those black figurines are wet suits divers

    • @@MRCIVN in few words, command and service module (CSM) had a small explosion in a tank . Astronauts almost died from lack of co2 and stranded on the way to the moon. I recommend you see the movie Apollo 13 by Tom Hanks, there they explain in a simple and not very technical way what happened.
