Sara, an IT professional & Stephen a graphic designer and artist are world-traveling Canadians who dreamt of moving to Europe, and France in particular. In 2020 they were working from home when Stephen turned to Sara and popped the question she was longing to hear, “What would have to be true for us to buy a chateau in France?” They searched online for months viewing hundreds of properties. They narrowed their search and toured some properties when they happened upon the one that captured our hearts, Château de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A year later they made the move to France to start their new adventure in our beautiful Château. They created “Manor and Maker” to reflect the two sides of their adventure. One, to live as chateau owners with all the ups and downs and two, to pursue their passions as makers, creating art in all its forms. They will invite others to come together, united by their passions, to share in this adventure. We invite you to join us too, as we bring our dreams to life. Welcome to Manor & Maker.
Anna is a rockstar when it comes to printing. She's an artist too, but the incredible ease of creating block prints is game-changing.👍
I love what you're going to do with the doors! Can't wait to see them finished and looking spiffy!
The design for the door is just gorgeous 🤩
Absolutely brilliant, how wonderful that you show all the stages. Love watching different Chateaus and all your hobbies, well done 🇬🇧
I’d cover the pool table with something from all the dust! Great machine !
Hello, wonderful door decoration. It is always damp on the door and there is condensation on the glass. That's why I would paint the wooden cranes with a water-repellent paint and then gild them. - Greetings from Munich
Glad you mentioned that, I was just thinking the same thing.
WOW! Those fabric borders around your mezzanine are incredible works of art! I’m wondering if you should put plexiglass over them to keep them from deteriorating or being damaged! Your Creality toy looks like fun! That creation for the front door is going to be AMAZING! What a welcome to the Chateau! Thanks for sharing! It’s always fun to see what you two are up to!
Steve i love your design it's absolutely brilliant 😍, Sarah you did well on your first attempt too.Take care and see you both next time 💕🌼🤗
What a fabulous machine! Absolutely love what you have created. The fabric borders aound your landing are beautiful xx
I agree with many of the comments, place either foam or corrugated cardboard under your paper, it’s a more forgiving background so you can press into all the areas of the block. Also, use a proper relief ink for your brayer. You can coat your brayer by using a piece of glass or plexiglass to get a nice even coating by rolling it out on that flat surface. Relief ink is tackier than regular wall paint and I feel it makes for a better print. Hope this helps😊.
So much to learn mand such a genuinely helpful community! Making notes of all of these for next time...
@@ManorandMaker they also have a no odor rubber stamp material than can be run through laser cutters/engravers. I have used it and had good results. I glued the rubber to a wood block so it was easy to use. I’m bet the Creality community could give you great advise on what works best. Good luck!
You guys are going to be fighting over your machine! LOL! Fantastic, both of you!
You guys are so creative! Just a pleasure to watch your projects.
It’s great to see what you are going to create with your new machine! Best wishes from Moose Jaw SK
Wow! I am so impressed of your beautiful artistic talent. The glass on door entrance is stunning! ❤
Love this lazar cutter and all the things it can do! Yes, Anna knows best! Cheers!
Cheers!
I am so excited to see the finished design, i have been so looking forward to this day.
Slick tool. Wish I had one 20 years ago.
And I find it extremely creative, that you use such a “modern” machine to create such beautiful patterns for your very very old chateau, I love the idea! 👌
Yes! A great juxtaposition!
It’s marvellous to see the antique sewing machine in the background of that fancy high tech machine.
That was so interesting to watch! So much creativity running amok in your chateau :) You are getting the most out of that machine. With each new try, I was more amazed -- fabric!! Love the wood cut also.
The scorching made me nervous, not gonna lie. But kudos to the both of you for some great ideas and the sheer "noive" to try it out - and kudos as well to the folks at Creality - you took a chance on Sarah and Stephen, and voila! Great result.
Great to see you both playing with the Lazer cutter. I love experimenting with crafts. In regards to the block print ... spread the paint on a piece of acetate/plastic with the brayer (roller) and the roll it onto the 'stamp', then stamp onto paper. Ps: Hello from New Zealand 🇳🇿. I have been following your channel since the beginning and love joining you each week.
That was fun to see the different experiments. It is quite the machine that can do all that and with different mediums, like wood and material etc. I liked the way you did the wallpaper in the hall, large across the top then paint then the other strips, it looked good.
Hi Steve, Neil and I watched your woodcut printing, how fab that the machine will cut you such beautiful woodblocks! Maybe sealing the blocks with thinned wood varnish to block the absorbancy? Have you have tried printing ink already! Great vlog…it has got us both fired to stop decorating and to get into the studio!😂
Yeah! So glad to hear it! Get to the studio! We also should definitely not use "wine crate" as the base for the lino block, and use proper ink...
Wow what a machine, can't wait to see the doors when your done!
Steve, all the negative cut outs from the crane cut outs are wonderful to use to decorate a wood box and paint up. (tea box, jewelry box, or larger) wonderful machine!
Yes! We're saving the nice shapes in case the artists can make use in their projects!
Interesting that you can use different materials from wood ,leather or fabric sky is the limit
Hi to both of you. Once youve glued all the bits together you could take some rice flour and wood glue to make a little paste. Cover the tabs and lines with this and when dry sand lightly until smooth. This won't crack and you can paint over it. You can then cover both sides with acrylic glass (better than perspex). You could frame them for the windows or just put hinges on and seal edges with silicon. This is where my brain is going. Either way i think they are stunning.
Thanks for the info!
Put a piece of foam matting behind instead of the hard surface, looking good with endless possibilities
For the blocks of wood, you could use an acrylic varnish so that the paint doesn't soak in; and you'd get a more uniform application. And for Sara's fabric projects, perhaps you could experiment with welder's cloth as it's heat resistant.
Very interesting watch how the laser works those cranes are beautiful 😊😊😊❤🎉
Wow! Smoky. Amazing "toy". Beautiful ❤
I'm sure with a bit of practice you'll both work it out.😁 🙏❤
Love the beautiful designs ❤❤❤❤❤
This is Great, beautiful design☺️ It is also interesting to see the differens between the modern technologi and the old with those sewing machines in the rom🤩
I love the stamp you made. Try stamping with a squishy foam layer under your paper. I’m sure you’ll work it out.
That machine is amazing. For fabric, I would recommend the Silhouette Cameo.
Many mixed media artists love using the gelli-plate printing. This method produces a reverse image. Lots and lots of KZhead videos. As an avid crafter this content was very entertaining for me.
Steve & Sarah, Yes! A mention of Geli Printing!!
Lol - Getting good ideas for your plans Susan?!
S, My ideas are plentiful! Choosing the best ones is my delightful conundrum.💕
OMG ... MS Paint .... 😳 I feel your pain, Steve 😅
💕Very interesting great piece of equipment💕Imagine all the things you could make with this to sell from your channel💕
So many options... for fun or profit!
If you are going to name the rooms on this floor…the stamp could be pressed on to a plaque w/the special name. If the machine cuts rubber, you are in business. Makers gonna Make.🥰
Makers gotta make indeed. Geeks gotta geek. We'll get on it.
Brilliant ideas Stephen may I suggest when you go to stamp with a new wood block stamp seal it first.
That machine looks like a lot of fun! I can think of all kinds of ways to make use of it. I wonder if you can make it do a beveled or rounded edge cut? Might look more "finished" that way on wood?
Steve you might have better luck if you seal the wood block first before inking. Exciting what you up to with the laser cutter.
Bravo, such clever people
Gorgeous 💕
Steve you need a tray with more paint in it, let the roller run over it a few times then put on your template, I think your paint was drying in places to soon.
Sarah, I just thought of another experiment for you. This is for when you’d like to use the iron-on interfacing/backing for your fabric appliqués, to iron it on to the background fabric before embroidering (whether this is optional depends on how stiff you want it to be). Anyway, to know whether a super slick option is possible, maybe test (bowl of water at the ready and hand on the kill-switch) a piece with the iron-on stuff tacked in place. I haven’t used that for several years, but I seem to recall that you iron it onto the back of the fabric, cut it out, then dampen it to steam-iron it to where you want it. (Instructions come with it.) Of course, I don’t know whether it would go up in flames, or be too hot for the fusible stuff, or what. But maybe since full activation doesn’t take place until water/steam is involved, it could work. 🙂
I love that... will try it!
Anna uses vinyl tiles cut out to make her designs, perhaps use that instead of timber. It could work with the machine since it can cut leather. Have you thought about making decorative name plates for each of the guest bedrooms? Or even each room in the house? Sara, have you thought about 100% wool, it is flame resistant. You can buy all different thickness of wool felt or fabric.
We did do room name plates on the first laser cutter video we did. Wool is a great call out...When we can find 100% wool, that's a nice option.
Put the paint on a pane of glass and roll the brayed into it,getting it inked up well.
What are you going to do with the top door. A simple design would look lovely to finish it off.
You might want a handle on the back, and then you want to roll your design from 1 side to the other. Dip in a paint tray, then clen with a brush before rolling.
So many possibilities with that laser machine. A rubber roller is definitely the way to go for putting paint on the stamp. In order to spread the paint equally on the roller, put a blob of paint on an old pane of glass and then roll the roller over that until it is covered. However, I wonder whether wood is too hard and unflexible for your purposes there. I think you need lino or another flexible material for a large stamp like yours.
This machine is wonderful, i hope there is no radiation in that smoke. Good luck
Incredible machine! The designs are beautiful.
Thank you!
Amazing xxxx
Maybe seal the wood first with varnish or PVA or Shellac before inking ?
Cool!!!!!!!!!
You will need to seal your wood stamp with something so it doesn't absorb the ink. Hopefully that will work, or you can make a full cutout and use that as a template to carve a lino block like Anna does.
For christmas we made our own cookie-stamps with our laser engraver 😁 Just the same way, you made this pattern for printing…
Oooh, I love that!
Yes! I thought, that could be interesting for you, your own cookie-stamps 😄🤗 have a nice weekend!
For the printing. Lay the paper over the block and use the bowl of a spoon to apply pressure to the paper and block to transfer the print.
Can you sandwich it between two panes of glass to mount it so that you can clean the windows and protect the panels? elbows and backpaks wreak havoc on screens
Wood blocks are quite unforgiving a bit of foam underneath should get you a better transfer.
Would sealing the wood block after it is carved keep it from absorbing the paint, allowing the paint to remain on the surface and transfer to the paper more effectively?
Put a couple of layers of card stock under your work or use a mat
Perhaps you can also engrave foam rubber with this laser engraver, the most lasers can, so the stamping of the beautiful pattern would be easier… Perhaps it would work…
Yes... definitely a better medium than wine crate!
💜💙💚
A pad under the paper might help with the print problem
You didn't mention what the window panel substrate is - is it balsa wood? I guess for home use MS Paint would work, but I cringed as well! 😂
amazing how this machine worls, and your creations are so beautiful! do you throw the cut outs away or use them for some ornamental work….would love to use these…so:many ideas what to do with them…..and by the way, are you doing customwork with this machine? and a idea for fabric to use is hempfabric, it should give a great result in the Laserprinter
Very interesting, I never saw a completely open laser cutter before! Our lasers always were covered from all sides. How is it with the dust and the smoke, don’t you need a ventilation or something, so that the room doesn’t smell too much? I mean, it is just wood, but ply has glue in it, so if you use the laser for example all day long and inhale the smoke, it might be not the best for your lungs… But I love, what you create with this laser cutter, beautiful designs! Really great! (Sorry for my English 🙈, I am not a native speaker…)
Your English is great! Yes, it did create some smoke, as you'd expect. The air jet does help disburse it quite a bit.
Perhaps the wood needs to be sealed with something that doesn't allow the ink to be absorbed into the wood. On the aprons, if you you put leather name tags, you won't be able to wash the apron.
Will you have to seal it to protect from any condensation
I notice when Anna does it she pours paint into a normal paint pan & then rolls over it like she’s painting a wall. She does lyno instead of wood I think.
I think lino would make a better cut than the side of a wine crate! That's what we used for the test... lino next time.
If you use a wide masking tape when you engrave, no sanding needed.
Great tip! We'll try that!
The block may not actually be flat and that’s why it’s not making a full impression. It needs to be planned flat, ideally you should do that first cut block, light sand, seal block. I’d make the block a little longer so you can screw a handle on the back.
I think it also needs to be a better wood than "wine crate" 😂😂
👋👍❤️
Steve, regarding the wood block, did you plane the wood first before cutting the pattern? In addition to the kind of paint, there may have been uneven top surface that could account for the light print. Also i believe Anna carves into linoleum. When i used this technique eons ago, i used linoleum attached to a wood block. Wonder if the Creality would carve into linoleum? Also you could prevent paint absorption in the wood by giving it a clear top coat or primer…just something to seal the wood. That machine looks like great fun!
Yea... this was the side of a wine crate just to do the test. I think we proved the principle...
Could you cut Lino with your laser? That is what Anna uses to carve her blocks.
I have no doubt. Definitely a better material than the side of a wine crate :)
Does it set off your smoke detector ?
I'm no expert but I was wondering if your laser cutter can cut out rubber? Most Stamps are rubber so the ink or paint doesn't absorb into it.
Hi Sarah and Steve, I’m watching you both with my daughter who is a college lecturer in Art and Desgin. She loves the design but was concerned about the fumes from the lazer cutter. How are you making sure you are not inhaling the glue toxins from the cutter?
The air jet does help disperse the smoke quickly, but honestly, I hadn't thought about the glue...
Can you lino cut with this to print fabric or wallpaper ?
For sure.
Try lino instead of wood
Agree - readily available.
Wool do not burn.
🎉🫶creative
Boy that dust looks like it is smoking.
Have you watched “How To Renovate A Chateau” She makes her own wallpaper, material, etc. and she uses tile to do it. Would that machine take tile, then you use the brayer and print, etc.
She’s using linoleum not wood And he mentioned her in the video did you not hear?
