Destiny 2: How to Build and Optimize Your Armor Stats in 2023 (Lightfall and Beyond)
D2armorpicker is a fantastic community website that can help you really optimize your armor stats. Here's a little tutorial on how to make the most of out your buildcrafting experience. This won't go over explicitly what stats you should be building into your gear, but rather the actual process of picking out which pieces of armor you will use when you decide. Note that this is for people really looking to optimize and minmax their stats. You do not need to use this if you don't want to.
Warlock Strand video still in the works, I was able to record this live, no script, which is why I could get it done so quickly.

Wont lie, the whole feel of a calm walkthrough through the process was both calming and insightful. Thanks Daddo
The beginning 5-or-so minutes sounded like a Boss Ross video. Very relaxed instruction tutorial on how to turn your character into the (near)perfect death-machine 😇
Gave me old datto vibes
Its worth noting that you can also use the armour limitations section to restrict mod costs. If you don't want expensive mods like resilience recovery or intellect use the bars to show that your armour already had 7 energy used, that way it can only apply mods that cost 3 or less energy. That section isn't just for limiting armour to raid armour.
Yup, good for when I know what (expensive) mods I want, and have less space for stat mods
With the new mod system I have even limited some armour to only 1 energy for stat mods so that I can use the new armour charge mods. It's worth it when some of the armour charge mods give +30 stats while active
The solution for bungie is to make all stat mods cost 3 energy.
That is very true especially last statement
The limitation section is currently disabled unfortunately. Only good for raid slot currently
Datto, I just listened to your video while I was in the shower. I couldn't really make out what you were saying over the sound of the water, but I just liked hearing your voice while I cleaned myself. Made me feel like I was doing it right.
just FYI for anyone wondering, at 13:46 "usually as you tend to go down the list, the mods get less energy efficient" that's because he has it sorted at the top as "Used Mods" which sorts the builds based on overall mod cost.

Here’s a tip as well: for the in game load out system, if you want to be flexible with your weapons, grab random blues from collections, make the load out with them, and then dismantle them afterwards.
To expand on this and explain what this does: Basically, if Destiny 2 doesn't find that specific item (like it was deleted) then it'll say "Item cannot be found" for that slot. So, when applying the loadout it will not do anything for those slots that are empty and keep whatever you have currently equipped in that slot.
bigbrain move now i can actually be bothered using loadouts
Likewise, you can also set up hotswaps for mods in your armour, like reserves in your chest, with blue legs that youll delete so that it wont mess with your surge mods if youve already set them up beforehand The way i have it is a raid loadout with missing legs and weapons, which i would then swap to another loadout that has a reserves chest and surge legs with matching heavy weapon. Change heavy if necessary then rally, then switch back to the raid loadout, which will now give you back your original chest, whilst keeping your heavy as well as the surge mods
This is a really great tip! So we can make loadouts with "gaps" on certain slots where the loadout system will not touch that slot at all, by filling in a blue piece, and then deleting it? I guess I can also make loadouts that swap specific armor pieces (and mods on them) without touching my weapons by putting in blue weapons and deleting them too?
@@SirCamWAoh that’s actually a super nice suggestion, thanks
Babe quick wake up Datto’s new video is out
Thank jeebus the top comment isn’t another version if “Finally, I can have an opinion about _____”
This comment should get most cliche spammed comment of 2022
When Datto said “I don’t really set limits for myself,” I felt that.
Limitless
I would like to thank you for: - Introducing a fantastic tool - Laying things 'as they are' in your videos, you are hilarious and straight forward Thank you for your time in making us better at this game
Perfect. Just what I needed. I’m so overwhelmed right now. Thank you Mr. Trv!
Datto this video was perfect. The explanation was very easy to understand. The trouble I go through to get good stats, and you just made my day. Thank you and keep up the great work.
I really gotta get on DIM and make some builds! Thanks for the informative and clear video Datto and good luck on Friday! I’ll be watching your stream on and off while I work!
I was planning on doing this today! Thanks a million datto
I love these technical, end game videos. Your demeanor and tone are also very soothing so it is calming and inviting to players from different skill levels and dedication to the game. Keep it up!
Great video, didnt need this personally but I'm happy this walkthrough resource exists for people now :)
Coming back to say thank you for this video. I have now optimized all my builds and it feels great
This is probably your most chill video and I'm all in thanks Datto!
I feel like a video showing how to obtain and farm high stat armor would go really good with this one.
Most reliable way is with focusing emgrams for high-stat armor at the seasonal vendors in the helm. If Pit of Heresy is on rotation that week, farm the final boss checkpoint, the armor is guaranteed to have 2 large spikes which you need for triple or quad hundred builds. For artifice armor, you'll want to farm Caiatl on master during the week it's in rotation. Don't forget to use a ghost mod that forces some stats to go where you want them (discipline is generally the best one) and happy farming!
@@KetamineKarl I checked for the ghost mod, but I don’t see focusing, and I have my ghost maxed out. Is it bugged? Thank you!
@@kuonish They're in the 3rd mod slot from the left on your ghost, called "X armourer" where X is replaced with the stat you want.
@Bidniss Just a heads up at least for the new war table armour. As far as I've seen through using close to 30 engrams trying to roll a better arms for my warlock to get triple 100s the new war table armour is absolutely atrocious. I've got plenty of sub 60 Stat totals, and I actually don't think the discipline mod is working correctly with it bc the stat distribution has seemed extremely spread out. Yeah I do get at least 10 in discipline, but I haven't seen a single piece drop with a single Stat even in the 20s yet so just a heads up for people before they spend all their engrams that the new war table armour might not be the move.
Check out aztecross he has good farm guides up already
Thank you so much man. I literally never paid attention to builds, but this helps a lot with me just finding some armor that's good.
I'm pretty sure the creator of this tool isn't a KZheadr. Don't be afraid to hit the "Buy me a Coffee" button and throw some cash their way. This tool was a staggering amount of work for a "free" side project.
Datto, your cadence, tempo and tone is straight up giving me Bob Ross vibes. Happy Little Builds with Datto. Nicely done, thank you!
I was just wondering about this right before it was posted perfect timing for me great video as always
this is singlehandedly the most useful video I have seen in ages. Thanks.
I wish I knew about something like this sooner. Thanks for the walkthrough!
Thanks for the walkthrough Datto and all the best for the upcoming raid ! 👍 😊
Good to see D2AP getting some spotlight. And really solid video on giving a decent overview of the whole system. Definitely going to send this new players. (.... Too bad the API went down a few hours after this went up)
Great vid! GGs to the armor picker team for getting the new updates done so quickly.
Great video man , thanks , will be using this for sure
This is great! Thanks for the video.
This is by far the most useful Destiny Video I have seen in a very long time!
Love the audio quality on this video. More like this Daddo.
Just what I needed. Thank you!
Thanks for making this Datto.
I have been playing destiny 2 for 4 years now. Have thousands of hours in the game. I know all of this information but I still watch the whole thing. I really appreciate you making this easier for new lights to join this wonderful universe. Thank you datto
@@trickyBasterd very constructive chief
Posting this updated version to clan again Datto. Thanks for making it.
Thanks for this, very easy to understand breakdown of what I can see is an amazing tool to quickly sort out my gear, rather than spending 30 minutes mixing my armour slots to hit the break points.
Great info...thanks for the hard work!
This video is awesome man.
Good video! Appreciate all your help and advice!
@@trickyBasterd yeah I know that but it’s still helpful 🤣
This helped me so much for my void build!
This looks lovely. I didn’t play for like eight years so I don’t have any armor. But this audio was crispy af so I enjoyed watching.
I have supporting this dev for a while - what a killer tool!
Found it thanks Datto !
I don’t pay to much attention to builds like I did in D1. But I will say some of the exotic weapon+armor combos can effectively negate having to put anything in a stat. For example, Monty Carlo + Insurrmountable Skullfort on arc titans means you don’t need to worry about melee. Actium War Rig + Sweet business and 3 kinetic siphon makes intellect not needed as you can get 40+ orbs in a strike.
Thank you for this
17:26 I'm glad to see you also the Osteo/ Suspend combo.
datto does build asmr goes hard make this a series bossman
thanks datto this helped
Yes Datto. I really needed this video. Because Armor picker is kinda confusing for me.
thanks datto! now i can play the game 👍
Ah, this video is missing one thing that the other armor optimization video had. The Brim cam. Still a pretty solid video
Thank you so much bro
Also, you can hover over the different tiers to show what the effect is of having specific tiers in each stat
"Resilience is 4 Energy for 10 Resilience, it only used to cost 3. So thats a pretty increase now, we're losing 1 energy to...inflation" the Jez effect on Datto right there
These are my favorite D2 Nerd videos to watch! Crunch those numbers baby! Show me the way to maximize my gear.😊
I prioritize strength over discipline due to how easy it is to generate grenades via other means. Impact induction is a notable mod. It generates grenade energy off of dealing melee damage, be it a melee ability, unpowered melee hit, or glaive.
Thread of Generation is too good on Strand.
My first thought was if this was better than dim loadout optimiser and im glad to see that was answered straight away. I was about to play with it but the servers are down at the moment. RIP
Datto, I believe. You shall be the world's first this time FR. Good luck man, you deserve it
thanks man!
Bro your room is dope.
Always thean datto very helpful
Best of luck in the day 1 raid. I'm rooting for you.
Perfect walkthrough for how to use D2AP. I still fully expect to see people refuse to engage with buildcrafting and then complain about the game being too hard, though. D2 players will be d2 players lmao.
Love your calm voice in this one. Datto ASMR when?
DIM does exactly the same thing. I could never understand why I need another tool when DIM does it in-house and I can even have it calculate that with all of the mods while simultaneously completing said build and saving it. D2AP does a great job, it just does the same job I do in DIM with Optimizer. The reason for the preference is that your mod setup can change the armor based on what's available. If you need to use 9 of your spots on mods before a stat mod, you want it to try and find an artifice armor for that slot so you can at least get a +3 and that opens up options. D2AP doesn't take into account the armor and weapon mods which can greatly affect the armor pieces you need for an optimal build.
This is a game changer!
I use it all the time it's great
Can you make a video that goes along the lines of "what I'm bringing into the day one raid?". I know you already made a video last year about the subject, but I have the feeling things have changed enough to warrant a sequel.
I'm watching this bcuz I want to do it but I'm so overwhelmed by all of it & also these r the things in destiny that put me to sleep. Mind u once they're done, it's fabulous but it stresses me out. Plus I really need builds that don't require me to have so many steps (once I pick my armor) cuz I'm not always good at maintaining all that whilst playing game & staying alive. Thx for the tutorial tho.
I love the UI for D2 Armor Picker, but one thing that DIM has that it doesn't is the ability to lock down any legendary slots. As a more casual player, I don't have as much freedom to MW tons of gear, so for example, my first builds tried to optimize by picking an exotic, and then trying to get builds where I can use a different exotic and just one other armor piece, meaning that I only needed to MW two exotics and 4 legendaries (plus class item). IIRC, I had two leg pieces that were either disc or str-focused, while the head and chest had even disc/str stats (FYI, I had three arm-exotics that I used regularly and no others, so this worked out well). This was much easier to do in DIM.
This is gonna be brilliant for me. I feel like I fight with DIM a bit too much, so I'm looking forward to messing with this and getting things dialed in better.
Using both has been handy for me. DIM will let me toss together a "quick and dirty" loadout, and if I like the playstyle associated with it, I'll head to armorpicker to fine tune things.
I personally don't have a lot of high rolling armor, and for anyone else in that boat, I would make sure to account for the fact that the new font of something armor mods will grant 30+ of whatever stat it's associated with when you have an armor charge. It's helped me get 100s in stats when pretty much any armor combination wouldn't get me that high
yeah but those mods are basically useless as running the normal mods ends up giving more of a benefit OR theres just much more valuable mods to put on
@@Divine-General-Mahoraga I do see what you're saying, but I think it just allows people to experiment with different builds while having viable stats
@@Divine-General-Mahoraga You seem to be forgetting that stats affect more than just ability regeneration. For me it's nice for making up for shortfalls in my "best" armor sets (my highest stat hunter set has shite mobility, my highest stat warlock armor has shite intelect - being able to set those at max by picking up an orb of power is kinda nice.) You might also want to use them when "build crafting", as it's easier to slot the "font of X" to hit 100 in the stat you're testing (for just under 2 minutes at a time) than it is to farm up an entire set of gear focused on that stat. (I'm still deciding which stat I want as the tertiary focus for
@Tyler Johnson - keep an eye on the seasonal reward track armor, last season gave out full sets of 60+ stat gear (Hunter version needs font of mobility - it's REALLY bad without it)
@@muninrob putting on ashes to assets remove the entire need for intellect, you can also run 3 armor mods for whatever weapon to create orbs, ashes and whatever else. still doesnt change that getting your armor to 100 using that mod isnt worth when the normal mods do the same thing but dont eat your orbs for surges or kickstarters
Finally some good content
YESSSS LETS GO DATTO
I need to rebuild my Eye of Another World warlock. In WQ I had 60-70+ in all my stats depending on the subclass. Probably gonna have to go for that artifice armor now
Gracias amigo!
This season is a massive jackpot for double or even triple 100s. Defiant and Deep engrams both drop high stat spiky armor, which is the key to your T10 dreams!
Yeah...I definitely need to send the dev another tip. This site has made my life much easier for a year
I dont even play destiny anymore its just nice to listen to datto being optimal
This is badass
‘oh just make the build?’ sounds like the sort of insight mrs TRV would give 😆😁 btw you’re always really laid back, but lately you seem almost zen in vids
Can’t wait for the armor purge video
Tysm. I had no idea ANY of these (optimization tools specifically) existed. They really need to add optimizers in the game, or the game itself should just be called "D2 item manager".
interesting, I was focusing on resilience, disciple and intellect 100s but you are focusing on strength now I'm thinking I need to learn more about the meaning of the stats
Hey this might be a dumb/redundant question so apologies in advance! haha. Coming back to Destiny after a couple yrs this site is gonna be a lifesaver. Im just wondering- I have a pretty limited Vault. Is there another resource to use where you can set the stats you want and it will show viable options that ARENT in your collection? So you can target them in the grind. Maybe its even poss with this site and I missed it? again apologies if theres a really obvi answer here
I can actually build now that datti made a video
For those wondering the pinicle of armour is 30 on 3 and 90 in the others without the class subclass bonuses and stat mod increases attached on all 5 armours I like a 100 rec, res and int as my target 🎯
Intellect got nerfed, you're better off going for discipline
@@hughjass1976 maybe so i run it with volitile void weapon bonuses in the pyramid rescue with void shields popping everywhere i was getting my super back every 30 second from power orb drops
@Chris Hill exactly, so int isnt helping there. you're getting it back from combat and orbs, not passive regen
Been using this for tier builds then modify it in game and save the builds in the new left section on the character screen
Hi been a fan since destiny 1 keep it up
I always ignore Recovery to prioritize Mob and Res for Hunter. Can't have it all and since Mob is useless for other classes than Hunter but the other two are amazing for all classes you have to choose. Hope for a mobility buff soon.
I like armor picker since I feel like it’s easier and you can pick the exotic you want
Datto can you make a video about what armour mods effect what ability. Like with Strand, does something like impact induction or momentum transfer work with grapple/grapple melee? Strand has made mods confusing because of how indirect a lot of the killing is, like consuming your grenade to suspend enemies or having your threadlings get the kill.
Can you make a vid on how to get high stat armor ?
me watching this after already using d2armourpicker many times and having builds for each subclass on each class
Holy balls how did I not know this existed?
how do people still not know about this? there are tons of videos about this
Banger of a thumbnail
What I do once I get a build on armor picker is not use the loadout link on DIM but copy the DIM ids to the search bar on dim and fish them out ingame, then build it out ingame and add the loadout using the ingame loadouts.
Why?
“I don’t really set limits for myself” way to be, man
Thank u datto I’ve been having a hard time since Lightfall with stats. I relied on the mods that gave u stats and now they’re all dead poopoo
