French People Try to Pronounce Difficult English Words

2019 ж. 14 Там.

I make French people pronounce difficult English words! It's simple, the rule is they have to be 100% French to participate. Then, I show them a series of hard English words and they have to attempt to say them out-loud. Thats it!

  • As a native English speaker who has studied French, I think “choir” looks like a French word, and I can’t blame them for pronouncing it the way they did. I’m surprised they didn’t all comment on how the spellings of English words often seem to have no relation to their pronunciation. By the way, the last word is spelled wrong, at least on the screen. There is only one “h” in the word “psychotomimetic.”

    • Just remember, in most native English-speaking cultures, it is considered extremely rude and ignorant to judge someone for making mistakes in English. I've traveled a lot, and I really didn't like about 30% of French people I met in France as they would judge you harshly for not speaking French and extremely harshly for mispronouncing French. That being said, there were tons of kind/smart/friendly French people, many kinder/friendlier than most groups I have met. They just have a significantly large asshole population.

  • I have so much respect for the French people. As an American visiting overseas, I did my very best to learn, speak, and respect their beautiful language, but they would go above and beyond if I struggled (and genuinely politely, with no snarky backhandedness) usually help out by speaking with me in English afterwards, while still encouraging me in a positive way to continue learning French. I have nothing but nice things to say about the people I met there.🙂

  • 6:25. Many native english speakers do not pronounce "Th" either, it's entirely lacking in so many dialects of English. Irish English (famous for saying "Tirty Tree!" for 33), London English, Thames English, Indian English. It's effectively a feature now in many accents and dialects to pronounce "Th" as either T, D, F or V depending on context. For context, i'm from Kent, a part of england that is regarded as one of the more "posh" counties, and yet most people along the Northern coastline pronounce 3 as "free" and the as "ve".

    • Tbf, the English R is quite different from what other languages use as R. Most languages form R using the tongue similar to L, while English uses the lips similar to a W. • Their command of my language is 100% better than my command of theirs! I can manage REALLY simple French, essential stuff to find places, buy simple stuff, get a beer and be polite but the complex stuff is way beyond me. Every country I’ve ever visited I learn as much as I can and I’ve never met anyone who wouldn’t come halfway to help me, they humour me, laugh at me massacring their language and we muddled through. My favourite was in Germany when I was driving an HGV and needed directions, asked at a petrol station if they could help, I was determined to do it all in German but the guy there saw an opportunity to test his English. My broken German met his broken English and what should’ve taken about two minutes turned into ten minutes of confusion and laughter. He drew me a map in the end. It’s good for your brain to stretch the language section and then test it with native speakers 😀
