Matt takes a trip back to the nineties, driving the Ferrari F355 GTS. A special car in its own right, but with this one being fitted with a Capristo exhaust... it's a treat for the ears too. Get your sound up!

  • 1 - The cinematography is sublime 2 - The car is everything 3 - The sound is symphonic 4 - A brilliant summary of what these cars are about I’ve stopped going to ‘car meets’ as people veer towards ‘what’s the most expensive’ or, full of people who’ve all the money but no taste (ie - new Lamborghinis in fluorescent colours and equally awful interiors etc etc) my F355 sits quietly in the corner I’m not a rich guy - I’ve saved long and hard for my car. I don’t have a big garage, so my wife’s stuff shares the space - lots of stuff stored in front of it, to the side of it and even the lighter stuff on top of it. It takes me 30 - 40mins to get my car out - so when I do, it’s because I miss driving it and all the hard work makes it that lil bit sweeter 😎

  • These 5 valve per cylinder cars have a unique sound. Let's not forget why the f355 was such a success though, it was down to two things, firstly how disappointing the 348 was, but more importantly, how the 1990 NSX massively showed up Ferrari. Honda forced Ferrari to pull their finger out.

    @johnmitchell2269@johnmitchell22693 жыл бұрын
    • Great comment, very insightful and interesting! Yes the Acura NSX was a sensation when it came out. The exotic cars of the day were not very good quality. The NSX changed the game with excellent build quality, Honda reliability, and were easy to live with. Then they added amazing handling, exotic looks, and a great engine to produce a true legend. I was obsessed with the NSX. The first time I saw one in person was in 1994. It was parked on a residential street in Los Angeles. It was glorious! My friend and I stood around for probably 15 minutes just looking at it from every angle and drinking in how wonderful it was in every way. Ferrari got complacent with the 348 and the NSX is at least partly responsible for how truly glorious the 355 is.

    • History has been rewritten on the 348. The initial reviews were in fact very positive, which caused huge demand, and a waiting queue of up to six years. So it wasn’t a disappointment at all. The early cars did have issues (consequently fixed), a story which was later embellished by Di Montezemolo, the new CEO of Ferrari and the man who tried to sell the F355 as a completely new car, even though it was in fact a reworked 348.

  • The 355 is glorious! And the sound of that thing is on par with anything I've ever heard. The 355 and the 458 are my all time favorites of the rear engine V8 Ferraris. The 488 and the F8 are faster and are amazing machines no doubt. However from my perspective they don't hold a candle to the 355 or the 458 in either looks or engines. I'll take the free revving naturally aspirated engines in the 355 and 458 over the turbo engines in the 488 and F8 any day. And in the looks department there is no comparison. The 355 and 458 have a timeless beauty and elegance that the busier styling of the 488 and F8 can never compare to. Those cars have presence but so do the 355 and 458, while also being absolutely gorgeous at the same time.

  • I have owned three Ferraris, a 308 GTS QV, (121,000 trouble fee miles of thrashing) a 355 B (11,000 miles of thrashing in 11 months) and a 550 GTB (112,000 miles of thrashing in 12 years). Ultimately they all had strengths and weaknesses but the 355 had the worst weaknesses of the three unfortunately,. Firstly it had a terribly over servoed steering with a school bus ratio of 3.5 which should have been 2 0, it had massively over-servoed brakes (for USA starlets in high heels) that prevented spirited heel and toe, the ugliest steering wheel since the Austin Allegro and terrible acoustic management in its cabin which caused so much background noise that it actually drowned out engine noise unless you were driving continuously at 140 mph which sadly meant Germany only if you were going to keep your licence. That said, I wished now that I had simply modified all of those faults "out" and kept it because it could have been the best of the three with a (actually quite) a bit of work. Ultimately though (and only real drivers will relate to this) the replacement of a Five speed box with a Six speed was a terrible decision even if it added a bit of (never used unless you live in Germany) top speed. A five speed gated box with a dog leg first is the ultimate sex toy of real performance driving, and it is the mark of a real driver to know why. If you don't, then you certainly ain't one.

They came in everything from 10mm to 70mm thick. Even today, most Ferrari dealers who know what they are doing, will offer clients a steering wheel spacer if the car fits poorly as is.

  • for me being born in the late 80s, that car is the archetype of a sports car, which back then was either a Diablo, or a 355, or a 993 turbo or the exotic McLaren F1.

  • We're right where a generation will be born into a world without automotive drama like this, its fading, don't get me wrong performance and speed remain...but soul and drama, a high revving Ferrari exhaust it's going out of vogue...how incredibly sad. I have a 2000 360 and as it ticks up in value it's tempting to let go, but the sounds it makes (mine has full performance exhaust), the way it feels in the hands, the joy of knowing the entire point of the car is to produce goose bumps every single time you drive it, and it does, it's a magical thing (mine being a bit further down the road of tech than 355). Just magic, it's impossible to understand until you've driven one, in my case owned one.
