How to install an ASUS hyper m.2 gen 4 riser card in a x570 motherboard. I've looked all over the internet to find out how to add two or four more nvme drives to my ASUS x570 motherboard. People talked about it and mentioned things like birfurcation, but they never explained the process to make it work. So I finally figured it out, and since I'm not a big computer guy, I've made this tutorial and explanation video for all of you other non computer people. I hope this helps.

  • Just a note. Not every motherboard supports bifurcation. Make sure that you know the limits of your computer components such as your motherboard and CPU.

    • sooo, if stats read 1 x PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlot (x16 or x8) [CPU] 1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 Slot (x4 or x4/x4) [Chipset] 1 x PCIe 3.0 x16 Slot (x4) [Chipset] 1 x PCIe 3.0 x1 Slot [Chipset] on the z690, do you think this would no longer be an issue and I can simply put the riser in the second slot with no drawbacks?

  • Extremely well done! I learned how to use mine the same way you did - I spend hours and hours searching the web. I almost gave up but finally combined disparate pieces that I learned into a usable understanding of what you adroitly summarized in less than ten minutes. Ultimately, a number of people should benefit from watching your video.

I tried this card earlier in a motherboard that did support bifurcation, but only for boot RAID, which I didn't want, so I'm about to put this into an X570 board.

  • well since i started doing chia farming, and plotting on nvme drives, i learned a lot about pci e. In short, all motherboards have pcie (version xx) x16. BUT!!! That x16 only refers to the bigslot that it FITTS big cards who are x16. But it doesnt say anything about the speed, since 9/10 motherboards HAVE pcie x16, but run at x4 ;) so the bifurcation etc IS THE THING to look for if you want to get insane nvme speeds!

  • Finally got around to throwing storage into my ASUS Hyper, this video helped me realize that i cant just throw 4 sticks in without having to move and kneecap my graphics card AND with finding the correct setting in my X570 Aorus Master for bifurcation (1x8 2x4). Got the 2 it should show to show, so planning to return the 4 m.2's and get 2 with double capacity. Hurts to leave empty slots, but im not putting the storage cart before the graphics card horse.

    • I hear ya. It sucks to leave the two slots empty but all in all the riser is awesome and the m.2 card that you’ll have in there are gonna rock. Also, your GPU will be fine, it’s more like an invisible scratch rather than a kneecap. I don’t notice any throttling at all.

    • Dang we really DO have the same rigs! I love my set up and switching to AMD was the way to go for sure. As for the card I’ve had a few times when the MOBO doesn’t register it, and all of my games are on there. So sometimes I’ll go to play WoW and it says “install”. That’s when I know I need to turn everything off, open up the tower, pull the card, reseed it, then it works. It’s happened about 4 times since I installed it but over all its not that big of a deal. My games run so smooth and it’s also just an awesome item to flex.

  • Really nice explanation. You mention to only put 2 M.2 nvme drives, but I've seen people filling this type of expantion cards with 4 M.2 nvme's, is it because they where not Gen 3 or because they used the top Pcie slot on the Motherboard? I was planing on getting the expansion card and adding the M.2 nvme's as I need them, but if its not possible to populate the 4 slots... Again amazing video.

    @mandonga1200@mandonga12002 жыл бұрын
    • Correct, it’s because they’re using the top PCIE slot because they would be using all 16 lanes and each nvme takes 4 lanes to run, so 16/4=4. But if you place it in the second slot and bifurcate it, you’ll only get 2 nvme cards because you’ll be using 8 lanes in a 4x4 configuration.

      @Quaylin@Quaylin2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Quaylin Thanks alot for the clarification. Do you have in mind another alternative in order to add extra storage space internally to the PC that has good performance? Maybe I will get a 4tb m.2 nvme and not get 2x 2tb ones. Thanks alot!

  • This was extremely thorough but concise. Thanks for the video. I'm glad I stumbled on this. I have an asus x570 tuf gaming wifi plus. I bought a samsung 980 pro during black friday sale, and so I have a total of three nvme ssds (2 are gen 4 and 1 is gen 3). Both nvme slots are currently filled. My understanding is that I need to 'free' up the bottom nvme slot (the one that is not closest to the cpu) so that I can use one of these m.2 riser cards. So, the one nvme slot near the cpu will be filled and then the other two nvmes will be put on this thing in the bottom pcie x 16 slot. My question is do the two nvme's have to be both gen 4? I'm trying to decide the best configuration with two gen 4 nvmes and 1 gen 3 nvme. The nvmes are samsung 970 evo, 980 pro, and sabrent rocket 4.0. Was going to make the 980 pro my boot drive. I guess I'm not wanting to limit any performance from the 980 pro and didn't know if it made most sense to put that in the nvme slot by the cpu. Hope this all makes sense. Thanks again!

    • Glad this helped! They don’t have to be gen 4 but for me I’m a stickler on having drives be the exact same if they’re going in as RAID 0. But if not, no problem, they can be gen 3 and that’s fine. Also, check the x570 tuf and make sure you can bifurcate on the second PCIE slot. My step son has the same MOBO and I believe that one is one of the few x570s that’s doesn’t do it. Can’t remember though.

  • On the z690 chipset with an i9-12900k you can install the gen 5 version of this card (in the bottom PCI-E slot) with 2 x m.2 and another m.2 on m.2 slot 1 on the motherboard and still run your graphics card in x16 mode.

  • Excellent video and extremely useful for people with this add-in card. I'm wondering, did you read the included Quick Start Guide? I have this card and on page 5, point 6 of the included Quick Start Guide (Dec 2019 edition!!) it clearly states what to do in the BIOS for both Intel and AMD motherboards - EXACTLY what you did here in your video at 07:12 :- "6. ...For AMD motherboards, go to ADVANCED > Onboard Devices Configuration, then set the PCIe slot(s) that you have installed the Hyper M.2 x16 card(s) to to [PCIe RAID Mode]" Thus, no need for internet searching, though there are a few excellent in depth setup and reviews of this exact card from well before your video was released. However, always good to have more! As for m.2 drives in general, folk should be aware that when using one of these fast m.2 drives as a Windows boot drive, the most crucial parameter is not the headline/marketing sequential read/write speeds, but the small '4K' read/writes since the vast majority of the very many files loaded during boot time are these small files (same applies to many programs/apps). RAID won't improve this (and can degrade it). Unfortunately, while headline sequential speeds have increased from HDD to SATA SSD to M.2/PCIe SSD, the '4K' read/write speeds have remained pathetically slow. Google search "m.2 benchmarks" and you'll see that, for OS boot benchmarks, M.2 drives show little/no improvement over cheaper SATA SSD's. Where M.2 drives are useful is in being able to make use of those 'marketing' sequential read/write's i.e. they are excellent for transferring large files typically, video. But(!!), there is another HUGE potential 'gotcha' even here - you NEED to ensure the write speed of the destination drive is also fast! Transferring from the fastest M.2 SSD to an HDD will result in a transfer speed no faster than the write speed of that HDD...!!!

    • Great info! I did the research before purchasing the card so I didn’t have the manual (or even look it up to read it on the internet) so that why I did my research. But great information that you’ve provided! I use mine to hold all of my games that I play. Love this thing!

      @Quaylin@Quaylin2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Quaylin Aaah...I see, that makes perfect sense. For myself, I knew the card was compatible beforehand and there were a couple of YT videos I managed to find that covered the install and benchmark sides (there's not many that did this, so yours is very welcome) - Nailed or Failed Reviews, and BuildOrBuy. As you said, it's a fantastic affordable card to give you more m.2 storage options. It is wee bit of a shame that the vast majority of standard motherboards don't have enough PCIe lanes to allow you to use all 4 SSD's and at gen 4 speeds. I have a Threadripper TRX40 board so am fortunate there's plenty lanes (though AMD have now made this a single CPU generation chipset, so I'm a wee bit mad at them - only Zen2 39xx CPU's, no Zen3/3D upgrades options. Badly need Intel HEDT competition). As an SSD head's-up, I just noticed that the Sabrent Rocket 4 PLUS m.2 Gen4 SSD's have just had a firmware update that DOUBLES those 4K / QD1 speeds to take them to the top of the leaderboard, with 1TB, 2TB and 4TB drive sizes (the 1 and 2TB versions very competitively priced). This will make a nice Boot drive. One final thing folk should also bear in mind is that for almost all m.2 SSD's, those headline sequential write speeds have a significant well-known Achilles heel - the speeds will slow very significantly once the 'write cache' fills up. As always, Google is your friend here to inform you more.

  • Good video but you should probably put the GPU in the second x16 slot. It will work like normal that way and still allow you to have 4 drives in the hyper card. The shown config limits you to 2 drives on the Hyper card.

    • Not with an X570. You still don’t have the lanes to support having four m.2 and powering the gpu at optimal levels. The pcie x16 will naturally split its lanes and give the second slot x8. So in this case, you’re still needing to bifurcate the first pcie slot into x4 and x4 so that only two nvme slots can work. Nothing changes, you just switched the spots of the gpu and riser. If you want this to work with all four nvme slots running, look into a HEDT set up. Those PCs have two pcie lanes that both have x16 lanes allocated to them.

Hmmm now that I got the Expansion card that came with my Asus Rog Maximus Z690 Formula, I can now install a M.2 Gen 5 NVME SSD once they come out next year. I just hope having the expansion card in the second slot (PCI Express) doesn't take away the performance of my RTX 3080. @Kingtoby1981@Kingtoby19812 жыл бұрын
    • First off, if you install a gen 5 nvme in the riser (when they come out) it’ll down grade it to gen 4 because it doesn’t support gen 5. Also, make sure that your motherboard supports bifurcation if you want more than 1 in there. So no, you don’t have to add more than one but 2 is better than 1 in this case. If your motherboard supports bifurcation, then slap 2 nvme drives in there. If you don’t, your wasting those extra 4 lanes

  • Hello. I'm thinking of buying a new motherboard. My preference will be one of the Asus or MSI rear motherboards with x570 chipset. However, I have a few questions that I can't find the answer here. 1- I plan to use Asus hyper card for 4 pieces of m.2 nvme configuration. Which motherboards allow partitioning the PCIe slot as x4+x4+x4+x4. (Of course, on the Asus and MSI side.) ( The last parts I used were x299 e gaming ii and 7940x. However, since this motherboard does not allow configuration related to PCIE slots, I could not solve this problem. ) I have another MSI motherboard (B550 Unify) and it unfortunately provides this configuration as x8 + x4 + x4. 2- Is there a processor factor in providing this partitioning we mentioned, or is it a situation related only to the chipset version. For some reason, the configuration is x4+x4+x4+x4 on the Ryzen 5 2600 processor and B550 Gaming Carbon Wifi motherboard at my workplace! 3- Finally, when we provide this configuration, what will be the result of the configuration when we plug the graphics card into the first slot and the hyper card into the second slot. I will be waiting for your answer. Thank you in advance for your interest.

If you have an integrated gpu in the cpu then you'll be set to go, however, not sure what you'll be working on that wouldn't need a dedicated gpu in your rig. If you want the best of both worlds, go with a threadripper set up. You'll get two x16 slots. One for your gpu and one for your m.2 card that will be able to support four m.2 sticks. Just costs a lot more.

I currently have an RTX3070 in slot 1., and a single M2 in an icybox adapter in slot 2 ( and a single M.2 icybox card in slot 3)., my Mobo is the x570-F gaming so essentially the same as your example. My motherboard manual states that when 1 and 2 are occupied they both become x8 slots, so I THINK I would need to leave slot 2 totally empty to have all x16 lanes going to the expansion card for complete functionality of 4 installed M.2 drives??? Otherwise, I could installed it into PCIEX_2 x8 and only install 2 x M.2 drives but leave my RTX3070 where it is in Slot 1 running at x8.... Could you please clear this up for me? I looked into this board (which I’m very unfamiliar with) but it looks like you have the following configuration ・ 2 x PCIe 5.0 x16 slots (x16, x8/x8) ・ 1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slot (x4, x4/x4 via ROG Hyper M.2 card) So it looks like if you only have 1 nvme drive and you want to put it on the bottom PCIE slot, you should be able to do that because you’ll only use x4 lanes (which that PCIE supplies). Note though, it’ll be running through the chipset and not directly to the cpu because the bottom PCIE slot lane doesn’t connect directly to the cpu, which means your speed will be throttled a bit (but I don’t think it’ll be that bad to be honest).

Having said that, I’m not too informational on those systems but I would look into your motherboard and see how many lanes are allocated towards certain PCIE ports. I know for a fact that the first two get x16 each so here’s what I would do. Scrap one of the GPUs. Yes, it’s cool doing crossfire or SLI but in this day and age it’s just not worth the money to performance rate. You’re not getting much of an increase. Plus most of your rendering power (for video editing) is coming from your CPU and the mercury playback engine is just the little bit of help. But I would sell the second GPU, place the ASUS nvme m.2 card in the second slot, then start adding nvme cards until you have 4 of them because you my friend have the power to do so with that MOBO.

  • So the riser card honestly is best to use with Threadripper cpu and motherboard due to the fact the asus mobo can support 2 riser cards running 4 m.2's in each for massive raid storage. If you don't wish to take away from the graphics card on a x570e then your best bet is to buy SSD to m.2 adapters and run into your SATA 6Gbps ports since you have 8 ports total. You can also buy PCIE 4.0 X1 cards that add up to I believe can support something crazy like 28 additional SATA ports per x1 lane. But please be aware that the bandwidth for x1 is around 2Gbps so if your trying to add storage this way for server hosting it's a huge negative unless you use a x16 set as a x8 which jumps up to 15.75Gbps bandwidth, which is more reasonable. It all comes down to what your end goal is. Personally I have a x16 expansion card running x8 with 10 additional SATA ports with m.2's and seems to all work fine. If I need more storage, God forbid but if I do, I'll make a NAS server to handle the extra storage needed. Don't push your PC to its limits or she will throw up the white flag real quick. Cheers guys

    • @@Quaylin Just for the thrill of the Crystaldiskmark Scores!!!! Not only that but I want to get rid of my spinning rust drive. To have a State of the Art system (for now) and a hard drive just don't cut it.

    • If the z790 supports bifurcation then it should be fine. Everything you just described is in the video so I invite you to watch it again.

    • It won’t slow down your PC. Go for it.

  • That means if I have a GPU in the first slot, then the second slot will automatically run in x8 mode, which means I can only install two m.2 cards right ? If I remove the GPU, it will run in x16 mode, that means I can install four m.2 cards, am I right?

    • Correct. But if you install this in the second slot, you need to activate bifurcation so the x8 turns into x4/x4. That way you can run two m.2 sticks. But yes, if you remove the GPU and put it in the first slot you can run four m.2 sticks.
