In this Super Mario 64 ROM hack, I put the combo meter from Pizza Tower into the game! Pizza Tower was recently released and it has been a very fun experience, so I wanted to bring that kind of experience into sm64. The objective is to collect the stars in each level while making sure the meter doesn't run out, and it proved to be quite the challenge.

I feel like if mario had a mach run this’d be even cooler, say during his mach run he could run up steeper slopes without doing any funky tricks, kill enemys faster, etc etc.
Oh and tighter controls, having him be less slippery so you could make jumps and turns easier.

I havent played Pizza Tower, but the p rank 64 hack was really fun to play. Only got 3 stages in because CCM was so hard along with JRB. A rage filled yet fun experience. Love it! Maybe I could leave the M rank alone but its all possible. I might drop my routes down here if youre interested.
JRB is really difficult lmao, probably one of the hardest levels if not for HMC (though, i think my HMC route was pretty awful in retrospect)

Fun fact. S rank is basicaly P rank but you drop your combo. It works differently gor bosses. Also if you are going to change the ost to that of pizza tower's i have some ideas on what you could do. Whomps fortresses should be ainchent cheese. Big boos haunted mansion should be pizza scare. Hazy maze cave should be oh sh1t. Leathal lava land should be bloodsauce dungeon. King bombomb should be pepperman. Cap stages should be secret rooms. The dessert stage should be oregano dessert. Castle should be tower hub. And cool cool mountain should be refrigerator refrigerator freezerator! Perhaps you have some more ideas on what could be done!
Honestly BBH would make more sense as the unused mansion level due to it, y'know. Being a mansion (Or DMaS that would make sense too)

A really interesting concept! Makes me want to play a Mario 64'd Pizza Tower where the stages are more linear and have lesser collectibles similar to the Toppins and treasures, as well as a lap 2. Possibly the ability to have a mach run whose dive kills tougher foes like the Boos and Chuckyas.

It could be interesting if you find a way to put the 2nd lap and other ranks in the game
I had considered both, but there are a lot of semantics with the second lap due to the nonlinear nature of most stages. As for the other ranks, it would entail a more traditional score system which also doesn’t work as well in some of the stages with less stuff
@@cowquack Maybe the score system can work by calculating how many stars you've gotten before exiting the level and the second lap can work with a warp to the highest (or the farthest) point of a level but this might not work for all stages and would require another warp in the start of the level which leads to the castle.
@@promaster424 That might work, the main thing is that I would have to respawn enemies and coins which would be kind of difficult due to how spawn flags work in sm64

@@cowquack actually, i feel like lap 2 should only be added for specific star missions that have a timer or a race, like koopa the quick's race (in bob omb battlefield you could theorically add the lap 2 portal in that one hole near the top of the mountain), peach's secret slide or the cool cool mountain penguin race thing, maybe even add optional course races in the bowser stages due to their more linear structures

Dude, you could have gotten an M rank in tiny huge island so easily, like sure you arent trying for them, but the coins were right there in the wiggler room lol. Also i actually really like the 100 coins star, some levels arent great for it, but i find it a very fun challenge

update idea: if you drop your combo, instead of being instantly killed, the green demon should spawn in and chase you so you can still get your star (context: a green demon is a 1up that follows you, and in this case kills you instantly if it touches you.)
You should add an exit door, where you can leave whenever you want to after collecting 1+ star. Then it could be a speedrun category.
There needs to be a lap 2 where you run back to the end of the course, there would be some way to keep the combo like coins spawning during it
It'd be cool to see a fully functional mod where each rank is implemented instead of having to P Rank. It'd be a nice change to how you play Mario 64. I'd love to see that, maybe with the coop PC port that people fuck around with nowadays. That'd be badass! Almost half as badass as this vid. :3

great video! I could never do anything like that in SM64 but still fun to watch. editing was good and good guide through your step by step process. first video with your voice in it completely so the delivery was a little monotone but thats ok, its the first like it. it was still engaging and entertaining. funny too, especially the hazy mazy cave bit. would like to see more videos like this.

I feel like a background of peach’s castle would be good for P rank and I have a bunch of idea for the background of M rank, wether that be a solid red background of shooting stars or being surrounded by defeated enemies I feel there are tons of ideas for a background here.
Pair this with a squash transition similar to the title screen instead of Pizza tower’s lighting-esk transition for their P rank background and we might have really good P and M rank screen on our hands.

It’s actually quite easy to get started with modern tools, i recommend joining the simpleflips discord server and checking the pinned resources in the romhacking channels
