My brother lived in the Congo in the bush for two years when it was called Zaire. When he returned, he was even more quiet than usual. He went from 5'10" and 170 lbs, to 140 lbs. and almost died twice; once from amebic dysentery, and once from malaria. He's 6 years older than me and I was still a teen at that time, so he saw that I was trying to figure out how to deal with his PTSD, so he started teaching me Lingala and Mbaka. I have no idea how to spell those languages. He didn't want to teach me French, which was also spoken there, for some reason. I can say that my brother is definitely a genius. My dad was a member of MENSA but seemed moronic next to my brother. But unlike my father, my brother was always more mature than his contemporaries. But when he returned from Africa, it was as if he had emotionally aged another ten years. Whatever he saw, and he only gave me glimpses, changed him forever. Years later, when I asked him why he was so quiet and pensive after his return, he thought for a moment and said, "It took me a while to get used to people complaining about the most insignificant things. The people I lived with in the jungle had nothing. If they had shoes, that was very unusual. Before I left, I gave them everything I had. I realized that they needed those things so much more than I did." My brother, to this day, is my hero.

@@conorthompson943 I was borrowing his 1962 VW Bug so it had to be the early 80s when he returned. I want to say he returned in '81 or '82 because I don't think I borrowed it for very long. There was always scary political stuff going on in that region as well. He still doesn't talk about it. He only mentioned good things like sitting by a campfire in what he said was the darkest night you've ever seen be ause there wasn't any artificial light for miles. Suddenly, a rhino ran up from the bushes and started stomping out the fire. The people from Zaire he was with calmly, but quickly got out of the way and didn't seem phased. When the rhino was done and left. My brother asked what that was all about. They told him that rhinoceroses put out fires when they see them! I don't know if that's a belief they have or if it's really what rhino's do, but that night, that's exactly what that particular rhino did.🤣

This story is awesome! I used to live in Brazzaville, everything he is saying about the jungle is truth. I used to live across the street from the Congo zoo, the trees are so tall, the lizards are huge and they also have mermaids in the Congo. If you ever go to mama wata, they will tell you the story about the mermaids. The Congo is a interesting place.
Mermaids?? Proof? NOT ladies right.. like a 2 armed species unlike us?
You have some info about these mermaids? Do they know how they look?
the way he relives every moment of how he almost killed that guy just tells you that shit scarred him deep
pretty sure he actually ended up killing him. he talked about which version of this story to tell because it could get so dark. had “murder dave” come to the mic for a minute and specified that he had totally lost his mind. he gave such a detailed account about taking his money and getting pride and ego back like he has actually done it. story didn’t end up getting very dark at all so clearly this was the happy version of the story?

God Bless you and your Brother💗
Thats amazing
Mbote! Your brother sounds like a legend! What years was he in DRC/Zaire?
I lost 2 children in less than 2 years, I understand what your brother says and does, it really puts life into perspective.....(the part about people complaining about the most insignificant things)
I don't know if that's a belief they have or if it's really what rhino's do, but that night, that's exactly what that particular rhino did.🤣
So good to listen. I love Choe's narratives. He's always so calm and credible, I can tell by his body language and microfacial expressions (portuguese expert here) that he is telling the truth. Love him.
