How 'Modern Warfare II' Became The Most Realistic 'Call Of Duty' Game | Movies Insider | Insider
"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II" is the most realistic version of the game yet. The first-person shooter game has incorporated methods of photogrammetry and performance capture to transport our world into the world of "Modern Warfare," scanning in everything from Ghost's mask to fully-costumed characters. The team even distresses its costumes in real life to add naturalistic wear and tear to the military gear in the game. And it creates and scans real miniature models to stand in for BattlePass's emblem and rewards. We visited Infinity Ward's studio in LA to find out how the developer continues pushing the boundaries of realism and immersion in video games.

How 'Modern Warfare II' Became The Most Realistic 'Call Of Duty' Game | Movies Insider | Insider
Photogrammetry is in part why the game takes 160+ gb on the ssd.
Jup
so stupid imo
*checks cod hq size* *75gb* Sure
And why my 2007 nzxt computer can barely run it
Not really, 3D models consume wayyy less space than textures. Assuming that MW2 uses 4k textures for the maximum setting, a set of textures for each model would be over 200mb if uncompressed
It's been interesting to see over the last decade; Developers are no longer trying to recreate real life through creating textures and models manually. It's become the norm among AAA studios to use performance capture and scans of practical props/characters. It's an exciting time where we get to see truly photorealistic games.
Wait is that a good thing
@@assassin8636 That depends on what you mean by 'good'.
Yea common for AAA, given Indie and AA's budget.
oh wait you mean that's good? when most of them taking 999+gb of the space now days
Mortal Kombat's digitized graphics on the Sega Genesis wasn't good enough for you? I'm only half serious. The scanning is just a technique. It make sense for some games and not for other.
It’s absolutely incredible that ALL of this effort and time go into making literally 1 video game and this is just one part of the game. Then you have the whole story line that needs to be created, the gameplay itself, characters, multiplier etc. insane. Hats off!
And then you have Snoop Dog.
@@darekmaver listen dude, the game devs try their best but activision just wants to make trash collabs, its not the devs' faults, activision signs there checks so they gotta listen to whatever activision wants
The sad part is that no production value seemed to go into the actual dialogue and story. They obliterated all characters from MW1. Still great mission design and graphics and gunplay but man that was maybe the worst COD regarding quality of dialog and story. Soap and Ghost were so overblown it was painful to watch.

Fun fact, the actor who plays the General is named Glenn. He was on the board of my film school in Dallas. Really nice guy with a huge heart. Loved learning from him.
He’s a veteran of the call of duty franchise! He’s only ever been an unseen voice actor, so this is first role as an actual character you can actually see in the franchise. He also starred in one of my fav medical genres, so lucky you got to learn from him!
I think he was in the "24" tv series as well

This was beautiful. To all the artists, designers, engineers, prop masters, and crew that worked together to make this game look and sound amazing - thank you.

@@ubahfly5409 pure sarcasm... I love it.
You mean the work they did in between r@ping their coworkers and spreading revenge p0rn? For the record, call of duty sucks now. If you play multiplayer, matches are pretty much predetermined. Skill based match making will buff and nerf you mid game to make you do better or worse depending on your average skill over a couple previous matches. It’s crazy and frustrating.
@@joethomas2014 Ok man, but who asked?
we have reached a point where visuals arent the limitations its the creativity of devs.
Disk space is an issue, amount of textures that can be loaded to memory and such. There is plenty of issues that need to be respected. Nanite and similar tech overcome some limitations, but its never that easy

*only if you have the money and resources for it :)
So true! Now technology has caught up with developers ambition. It’s up the the developers on how they use that technology and how they execute it

Normally Insider covers alot of niche topics, food or art. I love seeing Insider videos but I never thought I'd see a MWII video on Insider and I'm absolutely here for it. I adore MWII and seeing these props is interesting and covers parts of the process people didnt know about or overlook. I thought that MWII was made off of digitally sculpted models originally, but seeing that they have physical props for his outfit and mask is fascinating

8:59 That's the real-life sized statue of Ghost when the LAPD responded to a panic button at an Infinity Ward office (One of their designers didn't think about what would happen to the button, so he instinctively pressed it) and had a standoff with that same statue because it looked like a heavily armed man facing backwards. If that is really the original one....
I was about to say, it seemed a bit goofy to scan a miniature like that one into the game, so it didn't look terribly realistic. But doing that to use it as a menu item is a pretty clever idea, it lends it a sorta diorama look. I like it!
and people still call cod lazy lol
I would say they are still lazy BUT in story writing and developing the game alone. But graphics is undeniably good and definitely the best since seeing the efforts that they do here. Gameplay and storyline is one of the biggest problems of the game that's pretty much it :>
some of the cutscenes just looked like actual movie scenes
thats because cutscenes are rendered like movie scenes AKA their not realtime. their renderd on a gpu farm. it taks hours to render them out,. into a video formate that then is played. not at all similar to realtime rendering. totally diffrent tools, and process.
@@voyageproper if those cutscene were real-time, I doubt it would stay capped at 100gb of storage
People still don't understand how cutscenes work years later... these cutscenes are pre rendered, they aren't using the game's graphics... even Ubisoft have been making realistic looking pre rendered trailers back in early 2000's, the reason these type of cutscenes aren't featured much in modern games is because most people prefer in game cutscenes due to the fact it's interactive and all your customized gear is visible in the cutscenes. Also pre renders take a lot of budget and isn't really that worth it in the long run.

Truly a work of art! Kudos to the artists who worked so hard to bring this game this far.
You can appreciate the aesthetics of MWII all day, no doubt it has its awesomeness of how they worked on those details, but the game lacks in many other places that people seem to forget or deny and just focus too much on the aesthetics.
Modern gamers dont know what a "good game" is
@Extant Fellow Appreciate something good for once? Okay. Why would I praise something that I dislike in the first place? Despite the fact that I've already praised the aesthetics if you haven't noticed, there's no reason for me to praise the rest of what comes with it, thus what makes my point of people getting falsely hyped by things like this just because it looks cool.

"It can appear convincingly worn and weathered." All except for that you can tell they didn't even put plates in them. Which is a common mistake in video games and Hollywood. They always build this well detailed and worn out looking plate carrier for the camera, but don't realize you need to put actual plates in them for it to look real. Now obviously you don't have to use real plates, but stores like Evike, and even Amazon sell both front, back, and side plates in multiple sizes, made entirely of foam for Airsoft/Paintball use. So you can keep the rigidness of the real thing, and the lightweight for actors to preform well.

I think it's kind of funny that all this effort can't be noticed or criticized if we don't know what real war is like or what any of those "realistic" add ins are like, yet they keep people in front of screens for hours so they can't see what it's like in real life how can we appreciate it then? Still however because of their effort and work I think they're doing an excellent job to be clear.
Its not realistic as a war game ( because basically you're a one man army in the story) but its realistic because of how they made the guns, props, and characters
im by no means a soldier or a veteran but if you ever look up real combat footage just on youtube or google , 90 percent of the time you wont see the enemy and its actual very quite for the most other than bullets flying and the occasional explosions from air support. Obviously when it come to gaming and entertainment its not as exciting to portray so typically games make it more dramatic in that sense.
This video is only claiming realism in visuals. Anything else is not handled by the art team

Studios should really include a "How they did it..." section alongside the Credits, then explain why the game took as long as it did to make (short or long). This would go a long way to alleviate newer gamers thinking games are easy to make, or the dev time "should be only a year or two."
