Some call it a sea, others a lake. For decades its status has been questioned.
Five countries - Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan - now agree the Caspian Sea, as it is commonly known, has "special status."
They all have coastlines on the water, and disputed who owned the area of water.
And a deal’s now been done…to share the surface and divide up the seabed.
The new agreement will open the way for oil and gas exploration...if it holds.
And it could lead to a new global energy and political alliance?

Victor Hunt absolutely NOT. 50% of the Caspian Sea belonged to Iran and the shah of iran purposely did not want any oil and gas extraction to protect the environment . If the old regime was still in power in iran , there’s no freaking way the stupid Russians would get an inch more of the Caspian Sea .
Every nation, all ppls needs the security of shipping and fishing of inland waters. Land locked ppls suffer the most and free trade is the only hope of security many ppls have.
May I add? It is a sea. A wonderfuly glorious creation that amazes bcoz it is landlocked yet it's naturaly a sea by any means of how a sea looks like. Am I making sense? 😊😀😁😂😃

I'm from UK and no fan of the Russian government or putin. I have no problem with the people and Russia is very lucky. Beautiful land, lots of resources, so big that it covers many boarders. If Russia was to spread its wealth with its people then it could be the best country in the world. But it's just as greedy as every other rich country.
This iranian in tehran was not the right person to choose for this debate.

Good point . I think they may argue that because it is not connected to any other water way , it will be considered a lake . But because it is large and salty it can’t be either sea or lake . It’s a seake !! Haha
