Cleaning Pajero Sport 4m41 Intake Manifold - EGR Delete? Carbon Build Up? Oven Cleaner burns! ha

I had been delaying this process as its a real pain in the butt to strip the intake manifold off my Mitsubishi 4m41 Pajero Sport, but I have to admit it really wasn't that bad. There were one or two little nuts and bolts that were a real struggle to get out, but overall it wasn't that technically difficult.
The valve clearances on the Mitsubishi 3.2 DID engine is meant to be checked every 30 000km but I highly doubt mine had ever been done. The paint markings on the valve cover bolts looked undisturbed so this is possibly the first time in 193000km that the valves have been set. She starts easier, smoother and quieter. Time will tell if I get better fuel consumption and better performance.
The entire job, including filming took me about 7 hours. Without the filming I think this could be done in about 4-5 hours for a first time, but possibly even quicker once you have done it once or twice.
Just get and it and give it a shot!

  • Fantastic Richard. That is the best vid out there on these topics. Don't forget to mark your injector removal in your maintenance manual. I think you get 4 removals. I don't think you'll need to do that process again for a long while. Well done and stay safe.

    • Injector pipes need to be replaced after the 6th removal from my understanding so I’m good. I would hazard a guess and say this is the first time they’ve ever been removed which means this engine will do a million kilos before those pipes need replacement. Haha. Stay safe too 😎

  • Very nice video! Planning to do the same treatment for my Pajero in a couple of weeks. Also gonna change the upper chain guide and the chain tensioner. For the fuel lines, could you release them with a normal spanner or did you use special tools?

  • Hi thanks for good video, I have done manifold clean following your steps, but my pajero cranks but not starting. What would be the problems? Or how to fix it? And as you mentioned, if intake manifold is not fitting for vacuum or pressure, is it affects for starting car? Thanks again!!

    • Glad it provided you some help. Double check that all your electrical plugs are connected and then ensure to pump the diesel through the filter and lines. You shouldn’t need to bleed the system but it may require you to crank it for a little while to get all the air out the system.

  • Well done could have spent more time on positioning the valves 2 and 3 also surprised you didn’t change the top timing chain guide and the subsequent need to remove the side tensioner to reset it. Otherwise well done.

  • Great video thanks. How many k’s was on the engine when you did this? Was this build up with an EGR delete? You might have mentioned these things but my wife was yakking at the time I was watching this. 🙄

    • Hahaha glad you never got a divorce from not listening. Yea, EGR delete was done by previous owner at unknown mileage. But I highly doubt they ever did any cleaning like I did. It was an unknown hence me doing the exercise to clean it up. In hindsight it wasn’t really necessary but glad I got to it. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed 💪

    • @@RichardBauer_ I did !! But I kept the pajero so a win for me 😁 I’ve got 13000 on my 2010, it’s got a full service history but I’m pretty sure the valve clearances haven’t been done properly. I was just wondering at what kms I should do this ? Runs perfectly at the moment. Liked and subscribed and very helpful. Cheers from Nz

  • Please explain the whole EGR block off? Why is it open in the first place and not blocked off by the manufacturer?

    @coetzeehome@coetzeehome2 жыл бұрын
    • It’s needed for emissions but in the process causes more issues. That’s why manufacturers put it there. Basically introduces exhaust gasses into the engine intake. By blocking this off you’re preventing already burned exhaust gasses from going back into the engine.

      @coetzeehome@coetzeehome2 жыл бұрын
    • @@coetzeehome Jacques is pretty good at blanking off the EGR if it goes to him for a service. Nice thing is that even with it being blanked off it doesn’t throw an engine code.

  • Next time leave the manifold in place and use a product called Compression Stabilizer. Been using it for years to clean intake manies.

    @ThrottleTherapyWithRyan@ThrottleTherapyWithRyan2 жыл бұрын
    • That would probably work on manifolds that have less carbon build up but on manifolds that have it really bad… I’m not so sure you’d win with it.
