This idea of tipping publishers for games is stupid. I'm sorry...if you really like the game a lot, maybe buy it for a friend or something.
Why stupid if it's an option? If I want to tip Remedy for making Alan Wake 2 especially with the type of game it is..why is that stupid?
@@tji7046 I would say it's not a good idea because things like that will take time away from making the game; for no real purpose that can't already be served by developers just building a decent game. There are many games that have come out in recent years that have just been absolute flops; already filled with Microtransactions, overpriced game package bundles, the starting price for "AAA quality" even though it comes with so many issues at release, and early access becoming a normal thing. These already big issues that show development is being hindered by a lot of companies in some way and the final product is suffering vs what people want to have seen. So them taking more resources away right now from just making a good game, and adding a tipping model to pop up in-game periodically or at the end of the game. No matter how small seems like adding fuel to the fire, when so many companies struggle to make even a okay initial product right now. That's just my opinion though, I would say if game developers and studious have a great track record with games in recent years ( A good example might be Larian Studios in my mind. Obviously Baldur's Gate 3 was a success but even before that, Divinity Original Sin 2 was also a success and the one before it. When companies have that track record established; they finish the game ON TIME and decide "Hey, lets add a option to send a tip if people would like to support us for our future projects." I see no issue in that regard. Sadly I think those developers though would not be the main ones using it. It'll be Bethesda at the release of their Fallout 76 ordeal and how much of a shit show it started out as. Or Ubisoft with Skull & Bones supposed to be a "Quadruple A" Title which will redefine gaming, and absolutely flopped. Those will be the titles getting this tipping in it when already struggling to make a okay game.
WTF are Jez and Rand talking about tipping studios? If you want, just purchase a second copy of the game and give it away or “burn” the code.
Because buying the game again takes 30 percent of the cut. What's wrong with tipping the company you like directly? Sure there might be a cut but it should be faar lower, that's the way it should work.
They’re losing their minds! 😂
@@tji7046becosue it sets a bad precedent in gaming people are not om worh MTX but are ok tipping a giant publisher more money which devs would never see lol ok.

PC is prohibitively expensive for most people and less user-friendly than a console - you’re not wrong though, buying a beefy PC takes care of all your gaming needs (minus Nintendo).
PC will get you alot of things but theres still stuff that misses PC its just that most multiplat games don't anymore.
Jez says Sonys strategy isn’t working but Xbox’s is surely worse. Inflation is the main thing hurting PS
I am not sure that Xbox has a strategy. Of course, with all the money they put in gaming they make better revenue. That doesn't mean the strategy works. It doesn't even mean that there is a strategy behind "I buy a business who make money, I will keep it as is, then I will make money too". Sony's strategy works fine, except on first party games, too expensive to be profitable.
@@nex571 that’s not really true tho, everybody highlights Spider-Man 2’s budget and obviously that got away from them, but nobody seems to mention the first Spider-Man game where documents showed they made 860m net on a 160m budget game or ghost of thushima which was made for 60m. They are making profit on games but inflation is making it harder to control costs, that is the area Sony has a problem
I am not saying that none of their games are profitable of course. But I think that multiple remakes/remasters of TLOU is a perfect example of the limits of the strategy. Sony knows that the market is not big enough to make this kind of game profitable. But they have a solution: if you cannot sell the game to enough people to be profitable, you can sell the same game to the same people over and over again. But with TLOU it becomes problematic, and I am afraid it will get worse with the inflation you have noticed.
"Our pillars already outdated and leagues behind the competition, Microsoft." Those were Sony's own words after the closure of the ABK deal, not mine. Even Sony themselves disagrees with you. Microsoft's strategy is the only commercially viable strategy in the long-term, hence why Sony keeps following Microsoft.
@@jimmythegamer2231 what MS strategy are you referring to, the only thing that is working for them is the strategy of buying big multiplayer games like Minecraft, COD ect and folding those numbers into their business. They can only do that because they are a trillion dollar company, Sony can’t make those moves. Everything on the traditional side from Xbox is struggling hardware, software, services all aren’t really moving the needle much
So it’s now about selling the game and not the amount of players who “played” a game. So we can finally admit that the number of players that they always announce does not mean anything. I look forward to Xbox actually stating how many copies a game has sold now that it is important to them according to Jez.
They hide the numbers because they are likely terrible. Third place box + gamepass means sales are terrible.
Lmao keep crying about Xbox Sony shill
Solar eclipse is the most beautiful thing I’ve EVER seen. Worth catching if you can. No joke
F2P games is more of a competition to gamepass than $70 games.
Avatar 2 is THE movie about people not listening to each other. If anyone would've listened...just once, the movie would've been over in 20 mins. The whole plot is circling around people doing the opposite of what they were told. It drove me almost crazy.😆
I figured it out the Xbox console will be a 3rd party box lol. And people don't want Xbox to copy Sony strategy, they just want Xbox to make good games like Sony games. And Xbox always report all the revenue....whats the profit margins ? If the business so we'll why is Xbox games on PlayStation. Seem strange
Xbox is giving mediocre games and Online games like Elderscrolls online to PlayStation to get more revenue for the Bangers like Hell blade and other games that are only on Xbox. PlayStation got mlb on Xbox lmao .

Dead space Definitely wasn’t a cult game back in the day, comparing it and gigantic is wild. Issue with Dead Space is that EA like always doesn’t want to Build a brand, they bring a Franchise back after 20 years and it expect it to sell the same as RE4, a franchise that is multiple entries into a golden era of quality. And when their game doesn’t sell that well they kill it.
F*** EA!!! They won't ever see money from me again!
In MY GOODS BOOKS is the opposite to my shit list maybe ?
I'm with Rand...the hypothetical strategy Jez is trying to lay out makes no sense if they are going to continue to value Xbox as a console/brand/platform...I don't think Steam will ever be on there, more likely I could maybe see them partnering with Epic to bring Epic Games Store to Xbox in a way that if you buy it there on PC, maybe you get the license to the Xbox version as well and becomes a play anywhere title or something like that with Xbox getting a kickback for it to try to help Epic compete with Steam
Jez is making the point that Xbox should turn into Pc just like Steam deck. So console war is done we all put our swords down and go home.
Does anyone else notice that when Jez and Rand have a disagreement, Jez goes into grumpy mode and Rand has to go mega up beat and drag him through to the end of the podcast?
How would I remember this gen if it ended today ...Hogwarts and Ragnarok on PS5 and Elden Ring and Halo Infinite Multi-player and Starfield on Series X are the games I had the most fun with personally played a lot of damn games this gen too just way too many lol
Wow, this was a great episode guys. Keep up the good work!
On your next episode, could you talk about how the ps5 is out selling the xbox series 2 to 1 I'm curious what your opinion is about that
what is the game being played in the video?
Little nightmares i just don't remember if it's part 1 or 2. Cool little game tho.
I was listening to the show, and how Rand and Jez were discussing the "next gen xbox" which would be open to having many launchers installed (Steam / Epic / etc), and Rand was wondering how Microsoft or Steam make money. What if... and this is a big what if. Jez or Rand mentioned Microsoft would have to get the blessing of the big Companies (EA, Ubisoft, etc), they managed to cut a deal with them. To ensure people buy the Xbox version and not just the PC version, they swing a deal where if on the Next Gen Xbox, you buy the Xbox version, you get a copy of the PC version as well included, however, if you buy the PC version on your Xbox, you only get that version. This would be an incentive for people to still buy the Xbox versions. Something I just thought up.
when it comes to weekly vs all at once the anime industry is a perfect example of doing weekly and create discussions and you know how they do that? they put a comment section right under the episode... whether you are going to one of the myriad of pirate sites or go to an official one like crunchyroll (or i guess THE official one now) we have collectively found out "hey comment sections are great" and that my friends it the biggest missteps done by most streaming services wtf would you randomly talk about it on your social media page seen my people who haven't seen the episode then forgotten vs a dedicated space that can harbor discussions per episode years after release
The fact that Outlaws is a Star Wars game means they're gonna go hard on mtx etc and try to milk it as much as possible. I'm staying clear of it until it's $10 in a year or so like all Ubi games
I remember the "it feels like they're giving up in consoles" argument when Sony and Microsoft moved over to X86 CPUs people thought it would mean the ecosystem would somehow go away
What book series is Rand talking about?

So the Phil saying the future of Xbox is a steam box . Cause who buying from ms store if steam on Xbox .
I agree 100% with everything Rand said about Ori 3.
Net ease in the past few years opened up ten or so new AAA studios which is likely why MS signed the deal to get Netease games.
Jez continues to reach with these hypothetical scenarios that would make a Steam Box version of Xbox viable. You aren't bringing in NEW customers or growing "the business" by creating a Steam Box competitor. You're simply reaching for more revenue as you see the console side of your business diminishing, & the sub service side stagnating. If they aren't selling games through their ecosystem & are no longer getting subs because people are buying from STEAM and expecting free online. Then how does this bring more customers to the ecosystem? In what way would MS be getting a kickback from STEAM & EPIC? 🤔 All those titles aren't Xbox games, nor do Xbox titles sell significantly on those platforms. How would MS make money from all those 3rd party & Sony 1st party titles on STEAM?... They simply wouldn't. Why would anyone choose the Xbox/ MS store over STEAM? 🤔 Jez's assertions aren't supported by our current reality or gamers habits. It also requires a complete reworking of STEAM & EGS's policies to work.
Unless access to external stores Is a feature of Game Pass
@@sethgarfinkel There would have to be some legal issues with that, right? 🤔 Charging to access 3rd party storefronts would get so much backlash that MS's head would spin. I could still remember the issues they had when they forced people to get LIVE in order to access KZhead and Netflix
@@kthebarbarian8223 totally agree. I was only suggesting that would be a way to make money on it. Actually I’d be more worried that this forward compatibility is being built in order to be able to dump the console and move the Xbox environment to Windows. That would really piss off regulators who suggested they could make such a move and control may more screens. I just want my game pass and my console. However that works out. I work with computers for a living and don’t want to game on one too. Of course if the hypervisor was licensable to third parties… oh boy would the CMA and FtC blow a fit
@@sethgarfinkel It would certainly change the landscape and MS's approach for sure. There are so many unknowns and emergent technologies going into the next generation & honestly that's making it more interesting compared to this one. Now the major question is, when does MS pull the trigger.
Jez lays out all the facts clearly of the future moving forward Rand keeps being stuck in the old ways of being against change/progress lol It will all work out great
I think its funny that when people talk about what xbox is wanting to do, they describe the steam box. But they act like it could work and the steam box didn't totally fail. Xbox would literally be turning xbox players into PC player/Steam, making its console niche and a glorified steam box. One thing that xbox has failed to realize, is that they dont choose if they are still a console manufacturer, the market/players decide. Xbox is gambling their unique position for short term profit. something that ouya, stadia, epic, luna etcc failed or are having a hard time getting support. But lets see how this plays out for them.
Maybe Rand should only watch MS shows once ever 10 years so he can binge them all at once.

Rather than Xbox make the showcase a one-day 2hr thing, why don't they just stretch it out to a two or 3-day event?
Tipping doesn't incentivise service. they do this in the US and their service isn't any better than countries that dont tip. Its just going to create a culture of developers feeling entitled to get tips, just like restaurants.

I do agree with that. Of the things that you guys pretty much said on those things. Anyway, good show.
If a PC player wants to upgrade without spending thousands of dollars, an NextBox would look mighty compelling at a fraction of the price and with a much better user experience on offer. I doubt such users would necessarily buy all their stuff there thru the Steam option simply bc the Xbox version will have tie ins to that box and its ecosystem that are front and center in the user's face. Especially when many of these major games are marketed all over the dashboard as being in Game Pass. Even if only 10% of these PC users on the NextBox buy games via the Xbox store, that is that many more players than Xbox would get otherwise using their store. Existing Xbox console users will mostly migrate to the NextBox as is. Any that were tempted to jump to PC will likely get caught by this new box instead. Sames goes for PSX gamers looking to move to PC.
I won‘t buy in into this „new Xbox“. 👎
Are we really getting hyped for Fallout or any Bethesda title again. I'll live happy never seeing Todds smug little face, or be berated once more by that hack writer Emil.
Jez really contradicts himself a lot. Brings up Sony profit margins and than goes to say how Xbox has their highest REVENUE which doesn’t matter right compared to PROFIT MARGINS which Xbox compared to the other companies is not transparent.
Lmao exactly make u wonder why Xbox doesn't show profit 😐
@@spectrexr1 Lmao you keep that same energy for Nintendo? Why don't they show profit margins as well?
@@jimmythegamer2231 😂 Nintendo...they games sell 45 million, and look at they games they cost 50 bucks and a pack of jolly rangers to make 😂😂 . . That why Nintendo never in these conversations. Cause only them can do what they do
@@spectrexr1the fact that no one calls Nintendo out on their pricing and how anti consumer they are is insane. But yeah they have smaller overall revenue than Sony and like only a little bit more than Microsoft (in gaming), but def have the best margins
To be fair Microsoft isn't transparent about ANYTHING. Their Financials and quarterly reports only share the bare minimum. And giving them the benefit of the doubt they are a stupid big company. The size of their core businesses and number of subsidiaries is wild and then everything is reported under one consolidated entity. Even in just gaming originally everything was scattered (like it's literally hurt last year we got Age of Empires on console) and post ABK even after layoffs they are still the biggest gaming corporation by number of employees. And we don't see specifics for any of their businesses including Azure which is carrying MS right now. I don't think any company shares that much in specifics. AFAIK we only know Sony's due to leaks from insomniac (the whole incident). Nintendo probably has the best but still doesn't report there's. The fact that Xbox doesn't report them isn't itself an indicator their's are terrible no more than we think Nintendo is about to go under. Microsoft has also invested a lot in gaming (like more than any other tech business now) and they've proven time and time again they wouldn't do so without current success in the market. Google Stadia (and like every other Google and Microsoft product) is proof how risk adverse these trillion dollar companies are. But all that said, if Xbox's margins are shit then what contradiction is there? Jez has always used Sony's margins as a "this strategy isn't working", so if the king of high quality consistent exclusives isn't seeing success with their strategy..., why should xbox follow it?

By that logic, nobody wants a PlayStation either. Sony's biggest gen (by a long shot) was 20 years ago...I'll say it again, for you slow learners...20 YEARS AGO!! Sony is still playing tic-tac-toe, but Xbox is playing chess. Xbox is making more money than ever, even if by acquisitions. Sony's been slowly dying for 20 years, but Xbox is making moves to continue to succeed in the GAMING industry, not the niche CONSOLE market. Sony sells consoles, but now, more than ever, Microsoft sells WAY more games on more devices, while Sony is floundering on how to stay relevant...hence them going 3rd party too.
@@fishboots639 Xbox don’t sell more games tho. Even with pc their sales don’t beat PlayStation games. That’s why Xbox never say how much games they sell, they say how much players they have. Put it like this, if PlayStation was run under Microsoft and Xbox was run under Sony, Xbox would be sega right now. Xbox have daddy’s money, but they need to get their management and vision right.
@@Amearie Believe what you need to sleep at night. Sony is looking for pennies on the floor (100mil console players, down from 150mil 20 years ago) while MS is grabbing the $100's on the table. Battlenet...you guessed it. Don't kid yourself that Sony sells more games now, it's not even close. BUT that doesn't take away value from Playstation. MS is fully behind Xbox, and they've made big moves to stay profitable in the gaming market. You should be happy with Xbox's recent moves, as it'll make Sony fight harder. Competition is good for consumers; enjoy the fight and reap the benefits of the battle. There's no need for diehard loyalty. Even if you're 10 years old and can only play on the box mommy buys you for Christmas, you can still enjoy the push in advancement competition brings.
Future of xbox sounds like a shitty pc to me. Just get a pc and install windows. Maybe launch into steam big picture mode if you want to use it with a tv and a controller. MS should focus on the xbox app on pc. Maybe merge it with battlenet
