    • Okay. So the first sentence states that the second sentence is true, and the second sentence states that the first sentence is false. So if the first sentence says that the second sentence is true, but is proved false, that means the second sentence is true, meaning the first sentence is false and the second sentence is true.

  • I'm reminded of the Stephen Wright joke, "I came home one night and everything in my apartment had been replaced with an exact replica."

    @peterhaywood4111@peterhaywood41115 жыл бұрын
    • If replicated to the quantum level , it would still count as the original apartment.If you create quantum replicas if the objects in your apartment , they would logically exhibit the exact same features (at least from any measurable perspective) as the original objects. The original apartment and the quantum copy of your apartment would be analogous to a entangled pair of particles , where the copy is the original , but the original is also the copy.... Unless i am wrong of course...

  • Vsauce is the type of channel to explain something and then leave me with more questions then answered.

    @8runeknight8@8runeknight86 жыл бұрын
    • Best kind of explanations are the ones resulting in more questions. If something is 'definite' there's no problems to solve, thus there's nothing to evolve to. For example. If I say that "rock is a rock and it consists of rock" and leave it to that. If everyone is happy with the answer and do not ask any more questions, the potential of a rock remains unsolved.

    • Oryon I clearly understand paradoxes better than you if you believe that the first statement of a paradox has to be true. Paradoxes are never true to begin with. Matter a fact there is no such thing as a true paradox. Every paradox either starts with a make-believe scenario or a non-factually based assumption. If you truly believe that, you'd better google some paradoxes ...

  • I told Theseus’ ship paradox to my grandma years ago and she responded (very quickly) “as long as it has the same name, a ship is it’s name.” It’s really funny bc I think as long as the replaced object retains its identity, whether self identity or one given to it, it is in fact the same thing. So I think a person who is broken down atom by atom and replaced completely is more the same person than someone who has no brain activity or multi personality or any number of things that could cause u to lose your identity

  • This was something that came up today in a discussion with a friend(hence why I find myself here; I wanted to see other ideas about the "Ship of Theseus" paradox) and I gave my answer on the subject. My answer was that identity is a title given to a polymorphic collection of things and that collection of things comes with a signature. The signature being details about its composition and location in space and time, and the sub-things that make up the whole thing have their own identities formed by their own compositions and signatures(Call them sub-identities, sub-compositions, and sub-signatures). All of these properties combine to form the identity of the thing in question, such that as any one thing changes a new version is produced. Now while this identity versioning is constantly changing we don't always consider it. For example, an object might be version 1.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0 and then a subtle change creates version 1.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.1 but to us it's just version 1.0 or even just version one. It's not until more significant changes occur, usually, that we begin to acknowledge a change in version; such as version one-point-two. In the case of being disintegrated in one location and reformed in another location perfectly we we have to acknowledge a significant amount of changes occurred in the signatures(again based on not just composition but space and time). Therefore a new version was produced. So to identify something as the original is entirely a matter of personal perspective because in reality we're not...

  • all of those paradoxes are basically crafted. they only exist within the framework of our symbol languages, but in fundamental reality, there are no symbols - no labeling, and since those paradoxes only arise when trying to label things, they are solely our creations. so in other words, coming up with those paradoxes is basically coming up with paradoxes for the sake of coming up with paradoxes... which I'd consider an endeavor with very little merit, but I guess we all have some strange hobbies, so no judging. ;)

    • I wouldn't say all of them fall under this category. I believe most are created because someone tries to find absolute truths about concepts that vary, which isn't possible. Some may consider the boat that was disconstructed the same as before, some won't, that a matter of perception and opinion. Although valid, to question what one considers as "the" something is a flawed question in cases such as these. I have to agree with you on the autologocal and heterological part though.

    • Yes. If there is something blocking the road, obviously the car in front would be "first". However, traffic jams when there are just too many cars on the road are caused by people slowing down. When one car slows down, it usually causes the car behind it to slow down and so on. When enough people have slowed down, traffic "backs up". Whoever the first person to stop is the first in the jam. Only get hets out of it very quickly, while the rest of the drivers behind him are screwed.

    • +Chris G It's not really a paradox it's just a vague word. If we come up we a minimum and maximum amount of items or volume to form a heap then it's just a range of amounts. It's like 6 cows are "several", if you add 1 it's still "several", if you add another it's still "several" until eventually you decide to cut the term to an arbitrary amount in which case it is now "many".

      @vitorsly@vitorsly8 жыл бұрын
    • +vitorsly Sure, the paradox disappears when we put specific numbers to amounts. Counting with numbers must have originated as a smart way of making one amount distinguishable at a glance from another (or an amount at another time) which otherwise look pretty much the same. One heap looks like another, but 256 is obviously different from 257. Numbers are like a kind of magnifying glass for the present and a telescope for knowing the future. Trouble is I don't always want to know.

    • The way you solve the heap paradox is through an agreed upon unit of measurement. Otherwise a heap is relative. What you might think as a heap might not appear as a heap to me. IT is relative to the observer,

I usually stop when I thought and remembered that I still need to continue my day, that I need to stop focusing and thinking about it, that I still need something to do, that I still have a life to live with, or when my head started to literally ache.

  • A heap ceases to be a heap when its parts exist in a single layer, and when you can count them, or at least begin to count them and be confident that you can finish, at a glance.

    • Richard Collins when tho?

      @kolepage6863@kolepage68637 жыл бұрын
    • Ok, so if we started from that point that you just said: A single layer, you can count them, confident you can finish at a glance.... now just add ONE. SINGLE. Grain of sand to that, and it becomes a heap? One single grain of sand would really make that much of a difference? That's where the paradox comes in. You can never get to that defining moment when it transitions to a heap, because that means it's only one grain of sand different... which is barely noticable. =P

      @k9kid991@k9kid9917 жыл бұрын
    • It's still not a heap to you, but it might be a heap to the next person.Or you might leave and come back, and re-evaluate your ability to count the grains, and find yourself a little intimidated. That exact point, the point at which anyone takes a fresh look at the sand after ONE. SINGLE. grain of sand has been added and concludes that they probably couldn't count the grains, is the point at which the heap is defined, especially if it's pushed together so that it's no longer in a single layer.

      @rikuurufu5534@rikuurufu55347 жыл бұрын
    • But still, let's say someone is at that point where they don't think they could count it, so they call it heap. If you tell them to close their eyes, and then you remove one single grain of sand, they won't even be able to tell the difference when they look again. They'll still call it a heap. Especially if you don't tell them if you actually took a grain away.

      @k9kid991@k9kid9917 жыл бұрын
    • So how is this a paradox just because people can't agree on the number of grains of sand, which we can't count, make up a heap? "Heap" is a very general term, a visual one, one that I would say by definition is something that isn't counted.

    • Urban Kitsune But if you use a microscope (and have enough time) you can actually count every single grain in a heap, does that mean a heap does not exist?

      @alexisjasso13@alexisjasso137 жыл бұрын
    • Alexis Jasso well then that specific heap is no longer a heap, but the next time you take a handful of sand, that is a heap. A heap just means an amount of something that you don't know the exact quantity of, so considering the next handful of sand you take is not the exact same amount as the one you counted, it's a heap.

      @puteborddelux1309@puteborddelux13097 жыл бұрын
    • The size of a heap is determined by your perception of the world. It's you trying to apply scale to something uncountable (as in it is not practical to count it). It's not about how many grains a heap consists of, it's about how big the sandpile is compared to something else. We are all different and have different perceptions of things. So the very definiton of heap will vary from person to person.
