In 2004, a bored college student named Brad Borne started learning how to create animations in games in Flash, as he quickly brought a character from his notebooks named "Fancy Pants Man" into the digital realm. He began work on a game featuring this protagonist that would eventually become known as The Fancy Pants Adventures: World 1, a 2D platformer that featured completely free-form, hand-drawn levels, something that was really unlike anything that Flash had seen before. The series truly skyrocketed in popularity once Fancy Pants World 2 released, which improved upon the already great first entry in almost every way. The game quickly caught on with a casual audience, many of whom found tons of replay value in simply playing the same levels over and over while trying to optimize their movement as much as possible. Some of these individuals became dedicated enough to play the games over and over again to see how fast they could really go.

  • I got home in the middle of watching this, my wife saw it, and immediately said 'Is that Fancy Pants!" This women is not a gamer at all, but apparently played it 10 years ago in middle school.

  • I was absolutely obsessed with Fancy Pants as a kid. I used every opportunity to play the first and second part. My sister and I drew our own levels, stories, gameplay scenarios etc. Once my dad took a picture of us holding our "fanarts" and sent them to Brad in an e-mail. And a few days later, he actually responded. He sent us a picture of characters from the game waving and a short message dedicated to us. For a 7 year old it was incredible. I still remember how happy I felt when I saw that drawing. Still one of the best gifts I've received :)

  • I love how dha is always swearing and still unhappy while luciousness is yelling LETS GOOOOO the whole time

  • So excited to see speedruns of these games getting some attention! I've been a part of the FPA speedrunning community for a few years; I made the SFPA autosplitter and briefly held the any% and glitchless world records for Fancy Pants 3. These games' communities are criminally small. Hopefully your video can spark some interest.

  • Oh man, it's almost criminal that these games have only been covered a little in speedrunning. Brad Borne was the guy EA contracted to make a Mirror's Edge flash demake! Thanks again for your hard work and everyone who contributed.

  • What we need is an RL rival meetup between Luciousness and dha. Along with a photoshoot of them wearing oversized fancy pants shorts in their respective colours (L in blue and dha in orange).

  • The fact that there are two people and two games, and how the world record holders flipped THREE times in the span of a year as they pushed the games to new levels of optimization is insane.

  • This reminds me a lot of the Zelda WR Explained video by Bismuth. A video that has so many new things added that it brings up the quality to a whole new level. The different font, the variety of music choices, the many different narrators, and of course the length, are all things that make me want to create my own videos. You, Bismuth, and Summoning Salt are definitely my biggest inspirations for how to edit any videos that I eventually want to make, and I am so happy that I got recommended your sub 20 train video back in 2020.
