It's a classic David versus Goliath struggle: Multi-billionaire and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has built a Gigafactory in Germany to produce electric cars. They are supposed to be environmentally friendly, but Tesla's factory is located in a water conservation area and a nearby wooded area is to be cleared for an upcoming expansion. Environmentalists are taking to the barricades. They have occupied the forest and erected tree houses to prevent the factory from expanding. How are they trying to stop Elon Musk? And will they succeed?

Making roads thru forests, cutting down forests to make roads and turbines. All while we do have another option nuclear. That only use 1/350th of the land wind turbines do for the energy it generates.. Im mad at Germany for closing down their nuclear plants without replacing them with new. Has increased the economic benefit for us here in Norway to cut down our forests. And the neo-liberalists are going hard. I did some math, based on UAE recent purchase and building of South Korean reactors. Norway could easy take the transition to electric society and have enough power for what we estimate to use in 2060 by only building 3 nuclear sites. With 4 reactors in each site. Total cost of 80-90 billion dollars (Abit high cost since it will be the first nuclear reactors constructed, so one is to expect abit higher cost than the experienced.) Total land area used to power us to 2060 is 6km2 with nuclear power. While we need to use 2,100 km2 if we are to power ourselfs with windpower.

Since if you aren't clearing land and using water and possibly contaminating water in one area, you're doing it in another. You're basically just choosing where to dig a hole in a yard. If it's at the corners, in the middle or anywhere in between, it's still a hole.

But do fuction quite well as forests untill they are cut down. The longer they are left alone, the better forest it becomes. If we use your logic too, then we can pretty much just cut down the 140,000 km2 of forest in Norway and make Tesla factories there.

Also apart from the environmental damage of mining the raw materials, there isn't enough of it in the world to replace ICE cars in use now. You want low cost, easy access transport, it will have to be mainly public transport and that is being lost due to costs. So people buy cars because they can't get to work without one. Mainly impacting low wage workers on early, late and night shifts somewhere in an industrial zone warehouse.

    • The problem is that EVs are NOT less polluting, they just move the pollution in different parts of the whole chain. Less direct emissions while it is being used, way more for manufacturing, and for producing the electricity to run it. Say nothing for the insane upgrade we need to for production, the grid itself, and electricity storage. It's actually a mind boggling scale of grid upgrade we would need for this... Which comes with massive pollution, as well as usage of more land. Overall, EVs being less polluting, is highly questionable at best, and straight up deceptive advertising at the worst.

      @simonthekindcutthroat6324@simonthekindcutthroat632413 күн бұрын
    • @simonthekindcutthroat6324 The thing about EVs is the potential to be less pollutant is there. We currently lack the infrastructure to sustain that. We need more solar/wind farms. We also need to make vehicles smaller. Less weight = less energy consumed. One of the reasons why my only vehicle is a motorcycle. It may be gas powered but I get almost twice the fuel efficiency as a standard vehicle. If an electric bike was in my budget, I would have picked that. Bottom line is we need to change as a whole and that requires the government to get on board too to fund that level of change. The problem I have with Tesla in general is Elon will move locations at the drop of a hat. If he feels like there is a better location that will allow him to skirt labor laws and give huge tax breaks, he'll abandon this factory easily.

      @nate6045@nate604513 күн бұрын
    • @@simonthekindcutthroat6324 you need to look deeper into this to make a sound statement. EVs use way less parts and are faster to produce! But the main issue here is that scale of production is key to lower pollution per unit. ICE is at its peak and not much can be improved but EVs are just starting and scale will make them much superior to reduce pollution in the long run compared to ICE cars. Do you think only about now? The future is better without burning gasoline and I think that’s pretty obvious. The same counts for energy production! The sun can provide us with much more energy then we ever can use, and that’s just one kind of clean source. The point is we need to transition now and it will be not perfect in the beginning. Any delay will be painful later.

    • @@kaigogolin515 I understand the POTENTIAL of it. My problem is the way they are marketed to people. As if they were less polluting and better for the environment RIGHT NOW. You might think that's not an important thing, but I do. I think people have been okay with a lot of change in human history, because industry deceived them, politicians deceived them. Making claims for what EVs are, that they aren't yet, is super unhealthy. It's the classic industry lying and lobbying for whats in their interest. Industries need to be held accountable for lies and scaling back milestones and improvements that were promised in general. Elon in particular is the wealthiest con man on earth. In any case, I think for any of this vehicle situation to make sense for humanity, we would need to limit vehicle sizes, which are insane, and fundamentally redesign urban planning to not be so car centric. (Good lord most of the city space is just parking its mental) That too, btw, was due to corporate lies and lobbying, hijacking city planning. Simply switching from one energy source to another ignores the core issues, and gives an easy 'out' in people's minds instead of forcing change where it would be important. Same thing happened with the plastic industries pushing recycling as a solution, so in the end, nothing changes, while people felt good about themselves, having solved the problem. EVs will be the same distraction.

The howling over the depletion of economy, the lack of qualitative jobs, the lack of technological advancement is met with as a heightened and absurd need to put environmental values above the economic and thus general betterment. A schism between the german society which not only creates furious opinion exchanges, political complications, but also hinders the country to move on and decide on what the road should be. Both sides as vulptures, never daring to make a compromise, both blindly following their ideologies and lacking understanding of the other side. It never occurs to them, nor to any other western country in that sense, that a compromised strategy, containg both ideas and values, is the best way. Were it so that they tolerated one another, then they would warmly welcome Tesla and simply apply finitude(bureaucracy, regulations) so that the eco-side is represented as strong as the economical one. But no! No factory at all is better. Sleepy babies, people of no true opinion and despairing lackers of the self and its duty to relate itself to society in a good and resepcted manner. The ideology over the self, the ideology over the nation, the ideology over all. And i wonder, on their death-beds will they regret, will they recognize? This goes to each single individual.❤

The damage done by building factories like these is massively offset by what they produce, if they can do it. This is clearly just ‘not in my backyard’ (NIMBY) politics going on here. Same thing happens with some people against wind turbines and solar panels.

    • Yea, but we have other options thats the idea. Not just continue this weird form consumption economics. Wind turbines fine if they are used on allready used area. But here in Norway they want to chop down our forests to make windturbines, aswell at scar nature with more roads so they can maintain those windturbines. So friggn silly when we have the technology called nuclear, that takes 1/350th the land area for the energy it produces. Aswell as it minimizing the need for infrastructure, as we can build the generation close to the consumption. But nah, nuclear reactors give little profit for the private sector. Cause nuclear power consume little. Mass production of wind tubines do give lots of profit for private sector, as it requires alot of resources and one can use mass production to make even more money. Our world is rotten. Consumption fueled capitalism is rotten. Tesla is part of the solution temporary. But not by cutting down forests. We need to plant more forests, not make less. Like those woods i see in video. Almost never exist in Norway anymore, cause those trees use 150 years to grow. All our land is private and run by oligarchs that plant only genetic modified spruce for that strait wood that grow fast. And they wont plant pine, cause they cannot make money off trees that take 150 years to grow. Most woods get cut down now and then. Killing all the life in the area. Im so happy for the few patches of virgin forest is have near. But its very limited, due to us being the worlds most privatly owned land. About 94% of our land is owned by various oligarchs. I can drive 2 hours west, all i see is my local oligarchs land. In the old days, all forests around me was pine, now its mainly spruce with a few pines only in the area that borders human population. Cause those pines are owned by homeowners, and not the oligarch. If everyone owned as much land as my local oligarch, Norway would only fit 870 people.

And with increasing natural disasters and conflicts, it is only logical to avoid it.
