I think that the only thing that I would prefer is a bigger screen to work on, otherwise I'd be sold on it. 14 to 16 would be preferable.
Apple really should release an even larger sized iPad Pro, 16 inches at least. They have the best screen drawing display tech and aren't taking full advantage of it. A bigger iPad Pro or even an Apple drawing display monitor would make Wacom obsolete.
God that'd be so expensive, a like a 4k minimum cost for sure lol.
At that point they should just make a touchscreen mac that folds 360° like so many people want

@@qualittyarts with CSP it can get cramped, procreate is made very well so you don't feel the small screensize, hell i was drawing on an 11inch ipad pro for a while until i got my own 12 inch tablet and i was blown away by how big it was. I have also used larger screen tablets, and sadly once you figure out you like a bigger screen it's almost impossible to go back haha! (Also, csp + recording for videos like I do, the battery runs out so fast, and im only using a 5th gen)
@@BreadedNuggetss ahh I didn’t think about CSP on the iPad mainly because I only use CSP on my display tablet lol. But good point, I can see how that becomes an issue. I had an 11 inch and when I upgraded to my 12.9 I almost regret it but now I don’t even realize how big it is lol
Ease of use definitely cannot be overstated as an incredibly important factor for anyone on the spectrum, at least by my recommendation. I am auti-adhd and struggle to find the energy and focus to work on anything for more than 2 hours even when hyperfixating. I started doing digital art casually two years ago with a cheap kamvas digital display which worked ok but the portability for when the time was right and I had moments of clarity was way too valuable. Getting an ipad pro made a HUGE impact in my ability to strike while the iron was hot and I've made massive improvements in my technique and learning over the past 18 months despite only having at best 6 hours a week where I actually can sit down and paint or sketch. The portability, response time, comfort, and functionality all come together to make things just WORK when I need them to so I don't get distracted or dragged down by fumbling with features and tools and needing a dedicated hard setup.
I’m thinking this is the case for me as well, I bought a wacom and started using it with CSP earlier this year because I thought that was what “professional” artists had to use but the entire process of starting a new drawing every time is so annoying compared to literally just opening an app and clicking one button. I realized that I liked procreate so much because it has all the benefits of digital art while being the closest thing to just opening a sketchbook and drawing.

As a hobbyist I opted for the less expensive option. Bought a Samsung Tab S9+ and using mainly Hipaint on it. It's a procreate clone for Android. I can upload my files onto onedrive etc. Works like a charm. If I was a professional artist I'd probably have gone for the iPad Pro as well, just because it's sort of the standard among tablets for artists now.

I just switched from ipad pro to tab S9, NEVER GOING BACK!!! The S pen is way more responsive and all around better than the apple pencil. Android has plenty apps including infinite painter which is procreate but better and even more user friendly. Hats off to Samsung :)

I’m a huge photoshop fan, I used it for 15 years. However, I’ve had more growth and more fun drawing in my iPad. Just having procreate and opening it when ever I want, instead of lugging myself over to my computer and setting up my tablet, makes motivation so much better
hey there! its good to see you again. thanks for posting this video. recently I've really been contemplating getting a bigger tablet but its not easy because my budget is pretty tight. its nice knowing that what I already have is good enough. i'd say my only complaint is the screen size but if that's going to come with the added headaches of the drivers slipping up then I won't be rushing a larger tablet any time soon. I enjoy your videos alot. I find you give great advice and are very relaxed. I still remember when you recommended the sketch board pro and that has been a great addition to my beginning art journey.
I just recently got an iPad Pro 12.9 1Tb and I'm so in love with procreate and how the pen feels to draw and paint with, the colors look good on other displays as well and I don't have to calibrate it with an external calibration tool, best purchase ever. The only thing is that the battery only lasts like 6 hours (didn't coun't the time but it's not a lot imo) in procreate.

I switched to the Tab S9 Ultra and gave my iPad away. I have no regrets. The S-Pen feels much nicer to draw with, I don't need any special screen protector or anything, bigger screen (14.6 inches), better display technology, and it uses Wacom's EMR technology for the S-Pen. I miss Procreate, but I absolutely prefer my S9 Ultra to the iPad.

@@beatrizkalliste I don't squeeze it hard enough to accidentally hit the button but if it's that much trouble you can use any Wacom pen you like. There are some great options out there.

Love your work so much! It’s such a joy watching you work. I agree about the products I have lots of different devices and just use what feels right for the piece I’m working on. I’ve been using iPads since 2017 and Samsung tablets 2018. I have Wacom and xp pen tabs don’t use them as much because of portability issues though. Best advice don’t get caught up in the tech just draw sometimes easier said than done with all the easy distractions.
I bought a 12.9 pro last month for college stuff, but also as my first ever display tablet. And I am head over heels in love with it. It's so nice and responsive, and I can lug it around in my backpack to draw on campus or in a park. When I got it in the mail I thought it was too big but that 12.9 inch screen is a real joy to use. Lets me draw with my elbow and shoulders, and it's a similar size to an A4/letter size sketchbook too. Just about the only complain I got is that it's suuuuper expensive, but that's why I bought mine used. If the rumors of a 12.9 inch air with m2 and hover are true, that would be wonderful news for artists looking to try ipads. (Oh also the file management sucks super hard. Thanks, apple)

I’ve been creating art since 2018 and been a traditional artist (I still am) until I found out about digital art. I’m currently using an old laptop and a cheap drawing tablet to draw. Also I’ve been using free art programs like Ibis X Paint and Krita. I’m going to upgrade to an iPad Pro which I’m getting for Christmas. I just find it more portable and easier to use than having to plug in my laptop all the time which requires a lot of setting up with various cables. I think that getting an iPad just makes my drawing experience less cluttered and easier to get my ideas down on the go. I have always wanted to try Procreate and that find I that can use my sketchbook to draft out ideas and then use Procreate to do the final project. I would also say that Krita as a starter art program is a really great option for those interested in digital art but don’t have the money to buy other paid art programs or to those new to digital art and want to give digital art a try.

I have the smaller ipad which fits in my purse nicely for travel and I love playing in procreate, it has helped me on my art journey between digital and traditional. so I appreciate your insights. I am not sure if I will get another ipad atm, but it's nice to see your set up for drawing. It looks quite ergonomic. And one thing I know, is that ipads or tablets fits my computing needs. cheers.
Thanks for share ! I use mostly ipad pro also (2018 version) since 4 years. Started to really enjoy learning all the basics when I bought this ipad. Simplicity is the key for me , just pulling my iPad and draw within a second encourages me to draw more. Still using my PC with Photoshop because when I need to do photobashing or photo texturing it is way better (in my opinion) than procreate ( because of the lack of dynamic layers ). My only regret is that the iPad screen isn't bigger. I would love a 16" one 😅
I use an iPad Pro 12.9 inch as well. That’s my main drawing tablet along with procreate. I did happen to come up on a Pen display Gaomon tablet and it was free. I use that when I’m in my office along with Clip studio. If I had to choose, I’d definitely stick with my iPad because it’s what I’m used to and also I love the portability. It is fun using that display tablet but the iPad is just so much more convenient

I use Procreate and Krita on PC. I love the fluidity of both. Krita has a customizable UI which I think is an underrated feature.

I’ve been using procreate for 5 years and PS for 10+ (😬) Tldr: I’ve always felt procreate is amazing as a digital sketchbook but for finished work I still prefer PS. It’s mostly due to procreates layering system and (maybe this is my old iPads issue ) slowness when having many complex layers/modes/masks. Also love my keyboard shortcuts! That being said I do actively encourage anyone to get an iPad if they can afford it since it really does level up your workflow! Makes digital art so much accessible!

I’ve been using a surface pro 6 to draw for 5 years and now I’m planning to get an iPad Pro 12.9! My surface pro has served me well. It’s nice to draw on but it won’t let me edit videos anymore, so that’s one of the many reasons I’m getting an iPad Pro, I’m so excited :3. I’m planning to animate with procreate dreams and edit videos with Davinci Resolve or whatever editing app suits my needs best
I start my sketch with a ballpoint pen that captures the tooth of the paper. Once upon a time that was the Papermate PROfit (discontinued), but now the Bic BU3 or Soft Feel. Even here some of the pens are too juicy, you want one that comes off a little dry so you can modulate the line with the paper grain. Then you start off with gestural drawings that capture the volume and perspective of your subject, but drawing very lightly so you never need to erase. You just emphasize what is correct as you continue building. When you have something that is truly worthy you can scan that into the computer or do a pencil version and scan that. I have been using Painter, but I really like what you are doing with Procreate and the IPad Pro. That seems the closest to sketching on paper that I have seen. I'll give that a try.
Really cannot blame you. Ive been using the Ipad Pro for over a year and a half now, and its really hard for me to go back to my pc with wacom pad.
I like that while you give physical benefits to using the iPad and procreate you tell us that, as a part of your list, you love it so much because you've learned to use it and have dedicated time to mastering it. I've been back and forth over whether I want to upgrade my 2 ancient wacoms to an iPad, Huion screen tablet, or a different brand... but you've made me look at it differently. I currently own a very large Intuos 4, and a small Hello Kitty Bamboo tablet. I actually favour the workspace on the Bamboo, and the reality is it functions just fine as a tablet in the way I use it because I prefer smaller workspaces even in my traditional art. So maybe an iPad would suit me better for my intentions than a screen tablet. 🤔 Thank you for such an insightful video. I've learned a lot today.
I have been using IPad/huion on my MacBook Pro setup for a few years but during the pandemic I switched to traditional art, watercolor, acrylics, charcoal etc. Largely working all day on the computer then spending hours on the iPad drawing seemed like a bad idea for my eyes. An unexpected result was that I fell in love with the feel of paint so I have been having trouble switching back to digital, which is so weird because up to the pandemic I was 100% digital artist. 😢😢😢
I've found that digital isn't something I want to use for the whole process. When I want to sketch, it's become something more along these lines: 5x8" blank index cards, 2mm lead holder and 0.5mm mechanical pencil, running F(firm) grade lead, modded with a wide foam grip and a eraser cap. These are things that are both sort of specific, but also so common that I don't have to worry much about brands; the action of the pencil click can be better, the cards can be heavier or smoother, not every grip fits on everything, some pencil caps are better erasers. But it's also in a certain range where the minimum will definitely work, it's not a vast gulf like the differences among tablet screens. And then I can take that to digital when I see something I want to add precision to, but because the starting point and emphasis was in the pencil sketch, it's again, not so critical that I use specific software or devices, or that I optimize the workflow in a productive sense of doing a *lot* of selection edits and liquefy and diving deep into brush settings and all of those features. I don't use it to paint, I use it to finish drawings. It's a subtle difference.
I've been drawing on Surface Pros since 2016, I am currently on the Pro 8 with the Slim Pen 2. I've used other drawing tablets and even a couple of different ipads, but I always prefer and return to the Surface Pro. Being able to use full Windows drawing programs on-the-go is just too convenient, plus the screen quality of my Surface Pro is so much better than any other drawing tablet I've owned. The pen, although not quite as nice as something like a Wacom stylus, is still very responsive, surprisingly comfortable to use for long periods of time given it's odd shape, and has just the right amount of friction on the screen when drawing. Any other little issues or quirks with the pen I've long since gotten over or worked past. I might save up to get a new, larger drawing tablet to use with my desktop setup sometime in the future, but I don't think I'll ever be able to fully switch from the Surface Pro line as my main go-to.
I just think its so godly because its industry-grade software and you dont have to pay a subscription for it not to mention if you get pro create dreams you can animate and edit videos like a pro for 20 dollars flat and to add on the ipad pro can be drawn on the go

I just started using a tablet for drawing about a month ago (probably around the time you dropped this vid). It's samsung. I'm still learning how to use it because honestly it's kinda weird but, I like being able to have something I can travel with.

Mostly use Clip Studio Paint on PC and Procreate on my iPad. I enjoy CSP more, possibly because my screen tablet is bigger than my iPad (10 inches) but it's also just nice to not have to worry about the battery of my devices.

Just switched from Ipad pro to Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 and it blows the Ipads out the water!! The S pen even outclasses the apple pencil with lower latency and the screen and feel with the S pen is flawless. Not only is it better and more efficient but its less expensive.
I’ve been using iPad Pro since 2018 and I’ve stopped when bought Huion for more “professional art”. It was definitely not for me so I just upgraded iPad to 6th gen and I’m loving it.

Ipad as an artist tool with the new models i think its reach the point where its can replace pc+tablet setups for most artists as a single device , and hopefully later generations will be more powerfull so can use even more software on it , no cables , its compact and can be moved easily can be used for 2d even 3d work now , i personaly wiped out my 9k worth setup and now i only use ipad for work , its quite funny that a small tablet that is a size of book and can be put backpack to carry replaced a setup that took up half of my room....

As an Industrial and Mobility/Vehicle Designer i was realy strugeling which device coul be the best! The Problems with PCs in general is the size and the flow of appliation performance, in this part the ipad is just mindblowing! The Problem with I pads ist realy simple, it is the size! We need an Ipad which needs to be at last the size of an 16Inch Wacom Cintiq and this is small. But for some professionals like me how needs space for the right line flow and design sketch we need a bigger display size, im sure you all saw a car design process with huge 24 or 27 inch Wacoms, this is what we love to work on but we are also happy with a 16 or 22 inch Wacom but an ipad is way to small! Its maybe good for illustrations but not for design sketching! I whish realy that apple will bring a solution which makes me to buy an ipad for this spacial treadment :) i would love to work without beeing dependent on any space.

I wouldn’t say it’s unmatched. The Samsung lineup is right there next to it. I tried it and was totally impressed but the iPad procreate combo is to freaking good. I’m on the fence if I should change get an m2 or s9 plus.
Samsung is literally right there. I think the only thing Apple beats them in by an edge is the pen is a slight bit better from what I hear, and the palm rejection is better on the ipad? I think. One thing I hope gets better for Android is the quality of drawing apps. we'll probably never get procreate I guess but I would like for stuff like fresco to get a timely release too. currently I'm using tab s8 base model with clip studio paint and i got it simply because I wanted more mobility and didn't want to have to move everything with my huion tablet when it came to drawing on my laptop, pen comes with the tablet, additional external storage, Dex, and more. I haven't used my huion in a while, but I haven't tried doing big projects with the tablet yet like a comic with many layers. eventually I may try and see lol or get a samsung 360 laptop. if you really feel comfortable with the Procreate/Ipad feel which many artists praise highly of, then I would go with Ipad which I almost ended up getting about a year back for that very reason. you could also feel for what kind of work you'll be doing at your level and get a more budget Ipad/galaxy tablet. and get about the same amount of work done comfortably. Also check out Brad Colbow's channel as he reviews both brands giving people a good mindset on which to comfortably choose.
@@kickbeez642nah the pen is ass compared to Samsung to be honest. The only thing good about iPads are the premium apps with great optimisation. If that was not the case I would have left this ecosystem a long time ago. Procreate is not even all that man it’s all hype, artstudio pro and infinite painter are the way to go in my opinion
Samsung is almost neck/neck to the iPad. Especially if you get the non lite versions. The pen palm rejection needs work and was the main reason I decided to leave Samsung. As far as software, krita is a top notch app to check out! That pair is almost just as good as iPad/Procreate.
Samsung basically already has the upper edge, better screen, free S pen (which uses the same tech as Wacom, so you can use any other pen that is compatilble), the palm rejection can be improved by the app that you pick, storage is much cheaper of course and there is microSD Card slot. Krita directly has the option to disable touch drawing and just allow gestures, it is still in beta but it is very stable and has great features, most people dislike the UI or the complexity but everything can be customized. Really for me the biggest factor is the price, the s9 ultra is almost as expensive as a mid spec Ipad Pro I think but there is still the Pen and software to buy. Even a lower tier tab is a just as good option imo.
I am using infinite Painter. I heard from others it's like procreate. Maybe you should give it a try

I started out in digital art using Procreate, and I would have stayed Procreate-exclusive if it weren't for my workflow of frequently designing for print. Currently I sketch and sometimes do line art on Procreate, then I transfer to Photoshop to color and prep for print. For whatever reason, I find coloring in Photoshop on my Huion more responsive than on Procreate. I also have a fairly loose style, so the screen size of the Huion lets me draw with my whole arm much more easily when I'm digitally inking! I don't know that I want to be married to just one process, so I'm constantly flipping between Procreate and Photoshop to see what I like more.

Congrats, I'm sure you'll enjoy it... for as long as it lasts. Tried this route for over a year and it has so many shortcomings compared to a laptop or pc. I just got rid of my iPad Pro 12.9" M1 and build a custom portable pc with 2Tb of storage and 64Gb of memory and now I never run out of layers again and can make my canvas huge so the prints of my artworks will finally look like they're supposed to look. Since it has no screen, I got a 24" Huion Pen Display for in my studio and a 16" Pen Display for when I'm downstairs. Since I still didn't spent all the cash I would have had spent on the iPad Pro with 1Tb of storage and 16Gb of memory, I also bought a 10" android tablet with pen suport to be able to sketch on the move. I'm really happy that I finally got rid of the iPad and can now work on a nice large display again, not having to worry about canvas size or lack of layers. A pc also has way better printer drivers than the iPad has. and I can calibrate stuff, what I see on the screen now at least looks very similar to what will get printed in-house and somewhere else. But to be honest, the best thing is not having to use the Apple Pencil anymore. No more hard nib hitting the glass. No more slippery pen body. No more too heavy pen. The Huion Slim Pen is so much lighter and more comfortable to use for long periods of time. The one that came with my Android is also lighter and shorter, easier to take with me everywhere.
hello Josh and "Hands". What type of tablet holder do you use to hold your ipad up? is it magnetic by any chance?
Btw I noticed ur using the chrome tab for the reference if you want theirs a feature in procreate that allows you to insert your own image in a sort of litle window that you can move around and resize all you want

As an ipad air user to get into digital art, i really love it. The air is only 10inches and i just got a huion 16 for literally half the price as any apple product. Apple doesn't miss but i cant afford or wait for a bigger display. I think if you get good at whatever you can afford then it doesnt matter. Also i honestly hate procreate and is mostly hype, Art Studio Pro is waaaay better imo for the amount of desktop stuff you can do in it while still feeling like something like Procreate.
I really like artstudio pro‘s brush engine, it’s great for painting. The strokes feel more real, light brush strokes will push or pull strokes you’ve already put down, it makes blending super easy and natural. Procreate is still excellent though, especially for people who draw more than they paint.
@@lucio-ohs8828 yea I don't think procreate is bad at all I just personally hate it. It's very good for someone who wants to have a close traditional feel with a non overwhelming option to edit and add some effects if they want. For me, I want to be as good as all of the photoshop veterans with my digital art. Since Art Studio Pro is closer to a photoshop I liked it more. Plus I started using Krita on my Huion and it feels somewhat intuitive. Even with all of the overwhelming keyboard shortcuts and options. I think if I didnt stop using procreate, I would be completely lost. But at the same time I got Art Studio Pro before they switched to a subscription, I would not pay a subscription for Art Studio Pro if had to now lol.
If Apple were to introduce a larger iPad Pro, I would surely purchase one, as to quote James Cuda of Savage Interactive, the iPad Pro and “The Precision and Responsiveness of the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil is unmatched in the industry.”

Hi @ergojosh! Amazing video as always. There’s just one thing that I want to know how do you resolve it, ergonomics? For me is very important to maintain a good posture and sometimes is very difficult with a tablet in general. I use my iPad everyday with artrage and procreate because I like more the traditional feeling. But for the most part I like to use my Pc to have a good posture and forget the back pain.

Is it worth it to get an ipad air 5gen 64gb just for drawing? This is going to be my first ipad ever. Was looking at the much cheaper ipad 9 but from the reviews seems like it doesn't support much layers for procreate so I'm torn.
It’ll work. That’s what I used for a year. Depending on your canvas size, you’ll get less layers but it was pretty decent. I only upgraded because I was running out of storage. Of course there are ways to manage that and it’s definitely a good tablet, but if you have the money, id definitely recommend getting a higher storage..or atleast an external drive to store stuff

I’ve used an old ipad that was given to me for a while now, and I’m just now getting an ipad pro. The ipad def works, just make sire you get one compatible with the apple pencil 1 or 2. The ipad pros have more power and better screens, but starting digital art on an ipad is totally worth it (imho, and especially if you aren’t working professionally.
Does the images on procreate still lose quality when you change their size with expand or contract?

Sir, that's because you are a pro artist, that's because you have a pro commission, that's because your are endorsed by big brands. Procreate doesn't have flexibility in any iPad. Beginners can't afford Ipad pro.
Imagine an iMac sized iPad Pro, and it runs iOS with all the iPad art apps working.
If I didn't hate Apple's ecosystem, I would have switched, too. I just love Paint Tool Sai to use any other tablet
The Microsoft Surface Pro is a FAR superior platform for art, that resembles the most the Wacom tablets. Forget the iPad, the weird interface and the absurdly high price.
I can port apk from pc to tablet s9 no regret switching there. When u have control over the app it’s more important.
