In this episode, Rob welcomes actor, comedian and director Stephen Merchant back to the podcast.
They discuss bad stand-up experiences, a shared love of Bruce Springsteen, and why Stephen has been put off from flying on budget airlines.
Stephen also explains why he enjoys being heckled by fans of The Office on online chess forums.

It would be nice to have a youtube option for the full episodes too.. even if you upload them as "unlisted" and link to them in this comment. Could also consider putting them on bandcamp at a quid a go or such?
It's his birthday.
Please do your Roger Moore. Coogan can suck it!
When is David Mitchel sitting down with you?
What about Rob Brydon AND...Adam Buxton?
" I just thought there must be a tractor sale .."
Oh GOD. It's been a while since I've seen Steve, it's like seeing him for the first time all over again.. bit of a shock!
Had to do a double take.
Used to him again by the end of the clip
‘Eyes that pop out their ‘ead- Steve’
Eyes bulging with imagined riches
His glasses touched his eyes
Steven always comes across as naturally funny. Also seems like a really decent bloke, honestly wish him all the best. Same goes for you Rob ofc

If the plane got into difficulty the cabin crew told everyone to meet at Steve when they land.
Eyes that pop out of their head..... Steve
Anyone saying Stephen never wrote anything as good as The Office.....come on....Extras was a hell of a 2nd album.
Better
@@bobbyboko6317 I’ve not compared the two. There are similarities as Ricky Gervais has a very comedic and intelligent sense, totally unique from anyone else in this earth. Let me say incase you think this, I am not saying that there are no other people who have intelligent and comedic minds. The Office and Extras are polar opposite’s. Therefore one is not better than the other.
@@lavernebell6274 Fair enough Laverne then let's just say I prefer Extras , but I do like the Office . 😀
Rob's hair transplant really is a work of art, the best I've ever seen.
He pointed at the Pachino style in the brochure
He’s must’ve had multiple procedures done
Couldn't agree more, I usually can spot a hair transplant a mile off, even the best ones, in fact I could probably tell you a few that's never came out and admitted it but I can just tell but Brydon is probably the only exception
@@fookoff9220 Dec off ant and Dec's is good.
@@stephen3654 actually yes another good shout! "Off ant and dec" haha
"I'm surprised you're asking this though, Steve..."
It's a shame when Stephen Merchant is thought of as that bloke on the podcasts with Ricky Gervais, both men are extremely talented in their own right and the comedy 'hello ladies' created by Merchant with Merchant as lead is so funny and barely gets a mention. Great interview ✌️
Respectfully, Gervais' work in recent years has proven that it was Merchant who absolutely made The Office and Extras amazing. Gervais' recent work lacks the subtlety and intelligence of the early stuff
I loved that show I was to my knees laughing 😂😂😂😂
Who thinks of Stephen Merchant as just that bloke from the Ricky Gervais podcast?
@@liamjones9115Yeah exactly, not since about 2005 or so?
@@ryanyates4124That doesn’t prove it at all; Gervais may well have gone off the boil since then. I take your point though
As a tall person myself ( 202 cm ) I can relate... whwn smallish people ask me if I ever played basketball, I always ask the if they ever played minigolf... It settles the score!
I always ask how the weather is up there....😁
If Stephen was Italian he could be a Merchant of Venice.
eyes bulging with imagined riches
Annnd there it is!
'What the weather like up there?' 'Better than down there.'
There is such a special chemistry between you guys. Thanks for doing what you do!
I agree but I think Stephen has great chemistry with anyone as long as they're not being a a-hole. It's the type of person he is.
@@Elwaves2925 Agreed!
@@Elwaves2925 unless it's a woman
Stephen comes across as a really genuine guy you'd want to hang out with or have as a friend. Love his work, love his vibe.
These interviews are always a joy to listen to. What stands out here though is the way Stephen replies to a Brydon question by telling him about something a different interviewer asked him, then giving his answer to that question.
Stephen, I loved "The Outlaws" the story line, the acting, the mix of characters etc . . . Walken was wonderful . . Love from Thailand.
Fantastic episode. You guys should do a podcast together. With Stephen back in the UK!
I love it when comedians laugh at one another. And I hope that waitress is watching this.... we have a lot to thank her for!
Thank you! A lovely interview!
The Ryan air story was a right giggle... just visualising it 😆
Such a beautiful conversation between two amazingly talented people!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Mr Merchant is ‘ Gert Lush’ 😂😂😂😂 A brilliant fellow Bristolian 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
“MECHANT!! Who are you call sad?”
At least my mother still don't cut my hair!
Ooooh he's done you there
You can tell they are genuine friends. This was great to watch
Hide park, we can all meet back at Steve 👍🏼
I love Stephen Merchant and Rob Brydon❤
I think Stephen Merchant having facial hair makes him look remarkably like Jurgen Klopp
What a way to insult a guy!
”What’s the weather up there.” Reportedly, one time Will Chamberlain got that question he spat on the person asking and answered: ”It’s raining ”.
Eyes that pop out of their head........ Steve
Steve's comedy persona from his early stand-up, reminds me of Rik Mayall's student anarchist persona.. The audience knows things the persona doesn't.... :)
11:55 Streamers tend to get the same questions repeated to them aswell, they tend to start of with long and detailed responses and then over time optimize it to as quick as just a one word response. But these phrases you mentioned are more like small talk which usually is just there to convey their intentions and build a foundation for deeper topics, so if i was you and didn't want to talk to these people i would just develop a couple of pre-made responses to these questions and recognize that for some of them its an actually new question they are asking and/or they are just trying to communicate with you.
Man alive what a bloke
Cattlin' rustlin'
Steve’s early stand up persona sounds like Ricky’s entire standup career
no it doesn't.. Ricky's early stand up sounds like Ricky's entire stand up career.. I've heard him tell the same jokes for over 20 years now! ..and it's largely from chats with Karl in the xfm days!
@@mikefry4567 I wouldn't say that, but he does need to knock the subject of religion on the head. I agree with his points, but give it a rest, mate.
@@timothygraham4304 he needs to knock the trans jokes and cancel culture jokes on the head. It's all he's gone on about since 2016, and getting his phone out to read Twitter arguments on stage. His stand up and Afterlife are some of the laziest attempts at comedy I've seen. Merchant seems to have kept it fresh though and has much more class

Keep it up Rob. Loving the content so far. From a fellow Welshman
Was listening to Stephen on a podcast, refresh KZhead and here we are! Thank you Mr. Brydon.
Brilliant love Stephen both series of the outlaws were great comedy drama 👍
Was Steve a tall baby?
Had the pleasure of seeing Stephen live on stage once. Can confirm he is very tall it's not all camera trickery. The Outlaws was a great show of his and also, I don't think it gets said enough... but I love his performance in the video game Portal 2 - another very influential thing he was a part of.
Pure joy! Thank you! :-)
I wouldn't paint a picture of that.
Cheers both! 😃
Rob Brydon is very good at affecting Hugh Edward's Welsh accent. Very authentic.
I agree, Rob is very good at affecting a Welsh accent............
I don't think that comment is very effective. I'm even minded to effect an air of disaffection for it, but perhaps that would be an affectation?
@@mustafa1name Did I use the wrong word? If I did, thanks for wrapping it up in a bit of humour
Das Lanken Pissenstreak.
Rob sounded more Welsh than usual
Shiny head.. great chat!
Portal 2 has given him a specifically legendary status in videogames too.
Rob, you’re great in the Trips
I've never seen eyes that sore since Ren & Stimpy.
Going for the Pacino look there Rob? Looking good
Huge respect for my fellow Bristolian ❤️
what a line from Rob 'its funny you call it a persona'

Is that you Karl?
Imagined?
Outlaws was as fantastic as anything Ricky's ever done.
Those eyes, I see why karl freaked out when he 1st saw Steve
Rob looks so much like a king on a playing card.
The only king that hasn’t got a moustache is the King of Hearts, on the playing cards..
This is great, make it longer plz
"that's what she said" seems to be appropriate given the context
Oh, saucy
bloody hell!! did they have to put the camera so close? 😂
Defo didn’t try and wipe a smudge next to Steve’s head
I haven´t seen Brydon in a little while, but congratulations on the Hollywood teeth!
I love the beards. Keep them Both of you.
I never took to "The Office" - I think perhaps I have worked for too many managers like David Brent to want to revisit those scenarios! Yet, I have loved Stephen in every other thing I have seen him in. Disappointed that Rob didn't get Stephen's take on guesting on "The Big Bang Theory". As a 6'5" person I completely share Stephen's dread of plane travel.
Rob brydon ASMR would set the world to peace
Fantastic, as always. Chappeau
Omg you're the first person I've ever seen to use chapeau to mean bravo. I was doing a crossword a while back, and the question was something like _French word for a hat, used to congratulate someone (7)_ and so it had to be that, although I'd never heard that saying. Would you mind telling me where you get it from? (Provided you're still here after a year)
"Eyes popping out of it's head... Steve"
Love to see Steve and Ricky back doing another series of Extras.
Keep dreaming, mate... I'd love too
Eyes that pop out their head… Steve
Love Stephen Merchant. What a Writer and what an incredible actor too! He's little fat mate isn't that bad either 😁
Went a bit espanol at the end
Whatever happened to him?
There's a real correlation between Bristol and comedy. So many comedians come from Bristol and surrounding areas. I imagine the slapstick festival has something to do with that.
Is Steve going to get his producer to source Springsteen tickets and then not go again?
The facial hair shows good taste. The Corden mug on the other hand…
I think Stephen's bloodshot eyes tell us he wasn't late due to working on anecdotes 😅
Don't have a go at the eyes

They didnt mention Greg Davies who is taller than Stephen or Richard…
Stephen Merchant will always be wheatley from portal 2 to me
Seeing that Exeter is smack bang in the west country, perhaps Stephen's audience felt he was having a go at them personally; he'd probably have gone down a treat in Norwich!
These two need their own podcast. I think Steve has much more of a mature presence as opposed to his XFM days and Rob's maturity is already there. And Hello Ladies was utterly brilliant!
Hey Rob, please, please, please, interview the brilliant Julia Davis!
Please watch Stephen Merchant in The Barking Murders. He was superb.

oh no I was really enjoying seeing the trees waving in the wind and rain in the background and also knowing it was LA made it even better to know they get shitty wealther there too. Also didn't think the light was a problem...oh well, makes it look more clinical and deadens the atmosphere somehow. We know its not professional and its nice to make it feel like its just two blokes who are friends who might be talking to one another anyway even if we weren't watching...or would they ?!!!
I really hope you make the date for the Bruce Springsteen concert and that Rob does sit on Stephens shoulders and flas his boobs
Being in LA, I can narrow down to three days when this was recorded. It's not always nice and sunny, but it's not often it looks like that.
Loved that Hugh Edwards at a Royal occasion :))
