Charlie Sykes: GOP, Toxic Narcissists and a Fundamentally Broken Congress | Amanpour and Company
Congress is broken. So say staffers and an unprecedented number of elected representatives quitting mid-term. A recent survey by the nonprofit Congressional Management Foundation found that a large majority of senior staffers believe the legislative body is no longer functioning. Conservative political commentator Charlie Sykes joins Michel Martin to discuss "The Great Resignation."

Conservatives love to say Trump caused this, but the faction dedicated to making governance and cooperation impossible goes back at least to Newt Gingrich.
Gingrich, the Buchanons.
Gingrich created the structure that brought this all about - and he did it intentionally . The republicans have wanted to destroy the government since the new deal
Absolutely; this fiasco was brewing for quite some time: 🫖.

I agree with the sentiment, but the maniacs are being voted in by in-bred mouth breathers. Check out the constituency of MTG, for example. Or, Mike Johnson. We have allowed pockets of horror to fester in the US.

The unwillingness of conservatives to cooperate as responsible members of a democracy is the apex of contempt for the nation. Still miss seeing Charlie Sykes on The Bulwark, but happy to see him popping up here and there, and regularly on MSNBC also. A sane man in politics is becoming a rarity.
Great to see Charlie Sykes. As a Brit and long time fan of the USA, the main problem with the disintegration of the GOP under Trump and this cowardly Congress is what it may well mean which is the slow decline of American influence in the world and that will be a problem with domestic consequences for the US. Ukraine and Europe are already starting to adjust to the reality of an 'unreliable' America, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and the Phillipines too are likely to be weighing their options whilst wishing for better from the US. Obviously I don't have a vote but when I lived and worked in the US I would be a natural Republican and despite not being fond of the Democrats, I would certainly vote Biden this time.
Can you say three things that would make you a natural Republican which differs from Democratics?
Translation: "As a parasite Euro we hope that the 80 year long protection racket that is NATO continues." Trump, btw, has pledged continued support for Europe if it bites the bullet and honors its spending commitments. Now bugger off ...
@@ClarityDeterminationGood question but not so easy to answer because the 'situation' is very different between the USA and the UK, 'Welfare State' in the latter etc. On my own soil there is little difference between people who are 'Right' of centre to those who are 'Left' of centre and yes we have our extreme nutjobs on the Right and Left fringes of politics to deal with too. Whilst I grew up with the America of JFK when the US was that Citadel on the Hill, I got rather fed up with Democrats who dipped their toes into the problems of Northern Ireland the main purpose of which was to ensure the Irish/American vote back home rather than help anybody there. You ask me for 3 things, I will give you three people: John McCain, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

There are millions of proud Americans with the ethical standards to work in Congress and I count myself in that number. If hired, I will gladly work in Congress as a Democrat or as an Independent. The problem of the Republican Party is that the extreme views of Trump are not acceptable and people in the GOO are quitting out of desperation to deal with him. I have become a more compassionate understanding person but Trump just care about himself. He had all these legal claims and its' companies investigation for ages, way before he became president. He can not say this claims started now because it is not true. Only the election fraud in Fulton county were uncovered more recently, but the NY state investigation on his company has 5-6 years in the making. So he is not saying the truth or lying about the origins of these legal claims against him. The Egene Carroll case also happened many years ago. So these claims are not a witch hunt of the Democratic party.

There are better ways to fight for a principle. Lobbyist are more influential than the elected official.
We are in an epidemic of Narcissists. Our society has produced these individuals and we are all responsible in tiny to large ways for this. This is also true of the corporate and non-profit sectors. A salient quote from the Christian Bale Exodus movie is that [sic] "The people best equipped to acquire power are least equipped to wield it (properly)." We as a people in the United States must look at our culture, because our culture impacts so much of our world, and seek a way to fix it. ACTUALLY,,,I THINK THATS,,EXACTLY WHAT CONGRESSES IS,,,SUPPOSED TO BE,,DOING,,,,
🎯
We don’t want representatives for 40 years. 20 years max.
I know what happens when I don't work...I don't get paid. Maybe they should cut out the portion of federal taxes for Americans allotted to Congress and let us keep it til they do their job
We DEM BOYZ, chuck!
Sykes is like, “Sheesh, can’t we get back to the good old days of Karl Rove and Dennis Hastert?”
I wouldn't call Sinema a democrat. Most of those that have resigned really weren't that good.
Nice interview! Pertinent, succinct questions, & you allowed your guest to elaborate on the issues- especially with Mike Gallagher. Rep Gallagher *could* have matured into a substantive statesman. Instead, we are left with the Matt Gaetz & MTGs of the psychodrama that has overtaken our Congress! In addition, people as smart as Gallagher may believe that they can accomplish more (& make millions of $$s) in the private sector.
THATS BECAUSE,,IT’S,,,ABSOLUTELY TRUE AS FUCK,,,
Why is compromise a bad word these days? I was brought up to work with people to come to a result all parties could be ok with. There was an understanding that no one would get everything they wanted but it would be a solution for all involved. Anyone who pouted and whined about it was looked down on or considered childish.
TERM LIMITS!!!
Amen.
