  • And the Louis St. Laurent - the Canadian governments largest ice-breaker - comes to a dead stop on a sheet of contiguous ice. The LSL was designed and built in the early 60's. Even though she's had bubblers installed, it didn't do he a bit of good. At 11,000 tons, she's pretty light for a Class 4. She's a thirsty beast - you can see her rise out of the water as she's under-weigh.

    • that she rice out of the water is part of the design, she is supposed to rice up on top of the thick ice, and then crush it with weight alone, but hard ice can be as hard as steel

  • imagine a excavator without a counterweight or tracks mounted to the forecastle of the ice breaker. so it can be used for various things like launching and recovering small crafts and cargo.. but it can also reach over the bow and extend down below the water line and out in front of the ship .. a hot high pressure water line from the engine room is routed to the boom.. with a straightened stream nozzle on the end of the excavator arm.. this could be used to cut icebergs like was shown in the first scene of this video into pieces. it could also be used when ice breaking. cutting thru the ice in front of the bow.. or swinging back and forth cutting an S shape thru the ice during forward ice breaking. since the boom will extend below the sea surface. it could also be used to shoot high pressure hot water at submerged sections of ice bergs to get them to tip or split..

    • They have during years experimented with different methods to make icebreaking ships more efficient. The Canadian coast guard vessel for example in this video has an air boubling system which you can see in operation if you look closely. The idea is to pump pressuriced air under the ice and break it and reduce friction. Now a days they don't install those on icebreakers anymore, because all that energy is a reduction from the propulsion power, which is equally important. On the Swedish icebreaker Odin they have water nozzles in the bow to pump water on the ice to reduce friction. In the end of the day it's all about power and propellers and hull shape. In the modern icebreakers today they have a turning propeller in the forward for pushing and pulling the vessel aswell as turning propellers in the aft for making better path for the assisted ship. The basic idea of an icebreaker is to assist a ship that can not navigate thru the ice alone. The more efficienly it can do that, the more economical it becomes.

  • This is how we human are selfish!!! We have always been working against nature.. We have not even thought of any other creatures like fish, animals etc. except selfishness😔... We make borders on land, pollute, but even if we survive in the sea, we don't stop polluting.. We move ahead by killing many living beings, polluting oceans, killing lots of whale fishes😔😔.. Instead of this, we keep the animals captive on the ground and count money to see them... Just for our enjoyment, making our life beautiful & best.. This nature will definitely give us the answer and will give it in such a way that the mark of our name is gone one day...

    • @@markmadrid4721 Trees Actively convert CO2 to O2, They have chemical processes going on that actively change the environment. Ice is a state of matter for H2O Its solid water. Breaking it simply breaks it. But it doesn’t generate energy, it takes energy to break instead. Just like how breaking rocks doesn’t warm the earth. This isn’t how global warming works.
