In this episode of Interior Lives, our design editor Wendy Goodman gives us a rare glimpse inside the home and studio of Gloria Vanderbilt, legendary artist, style icon, fashion designer and heiress, where we learn how an icon continues redefining herself and her art.

She had a life of great fortune but also tragedy. Her husband (anderson's father) died young during heart surgery and her son committed suicide by jumping off the ledge of this apartment while she watched and tried to talk him out of it. She was very successful in her own right as a business woman and I think very strong to have endured this long with that tragedy in her life.

I read the book. "Little Gloria, Happy at Last." She came out of a difficult childhood remarkably unscathed. Yes it is remarkable that at 94 she still has an interest in everything. Young at heart, she's inspirational!

I wore her jeans as a teen in the 70's and have always thought she was a style icon. She is genuine. I love that she surrounds herself with her own memories and well loved art, furniture and design. I am drawn to magazines such as Milieu and Cottage - both different but both mix old with new. Just because you didn't buy your furniture at West Elm or Jonathan Adler yesterday doesn't mean it isn't great style (I think younger folk miss that). Great style is curated and organic over a lifetime. The portrait of her mom is stunning. And I love Gloria's pleated ruffle caftan, the color is delicious.
Oh yeah, the jeans! Me too. I didn't connect that with this fabulously wealthy heiress because they were a bit down market -- I got mine at Costco! I love that portrait of her mother too. And agree with your other comments.

I was so saddened to hear of her passing. Somehow I always felt she would never die. What a truly amazing life this woman has led. As a young woman starting my own design company she was an inspiration to me. How proud Anderson must be of the legacy she has left him.

LOL, I hardly think she's expressing herself "in outrageous ways". I'd say it's more an old style of decorating, my Aunt's in her 90's and lives the same way. A maximal look of numerous things a 90 year old would like to surround herself with, down seating, lots of pink and white, antiques, lots of paintings, and some fun pieces. But I admire that -- she adds the things SHE likes rather than bow to current minimalist fashion. Brava!

Greg Lamb I know a lady who became an Episcopal priest she had the same kinda of accent. From Princeton N.J. and well educated. She is down to earth and lovely. Hmmmm she became a shepherd to a flock!

I was 16 when I bought my first pair of Gloria Vanderbilt jeans... my grandmother bought them for me... at 51, I still buy Gloria Vanderbilt jeans. She’s been part of my own history and I pray she rests in peace.

She had always reminded me of my Aunt. My Aunt’s homes were decorated similar to Ms. Vanderbilt’s home. My Aunt lived to be 98 years old.

I admire GV's grit. She's taken what life's handed her and continued to march forward to the beat of her own drum. It would have been understandable had she become a 'victim' of any number of events and become withdrawn, yet she remains active, engaged in the now, and always interesting. In my opinion, a life well lived...and still going strong.

The familiarity here is comforting and I'm enamored of her work and would give my eye teeth to see her in her natural habitat, this shall suffice and I'm so grateful this fleeting glimpse was captured for posterity! Grand Dames are growing rarer and rarer, i fear the glorious eccentricity of this era's woman has crashed and burned and we are all nothing more than generic, flaccid shadows of woman two to three times our age that we can't even dream of holding a candle to! I remember the GV jeans when I was little and the older disco crowd wanting to wear them. She looks well for 94 and witty as ever. Love the portraits and artwork on the walls, I could not live in such a place with so much stuff but it would be wonderful to visit and explore.
