In anticipation of their Brain Candy live show tour, Adam invites Vsauce--Michael Stevens--to the cave for a special One Day Build. While the two chat about science, curiosity, and duct tape, Adam makes modifications to Michael's glasses to hide a stage microphone inside!

    @LOOINEY@LOOINEY7 жыл бұрын
    • Nope, probably, Adam's shortsighted... If that's the case, the glasses make everything appear to be smaller; but working in "short distance" allowes a short-sighted to take off the glasses... As the brain gets used to the smaller images, this CAN (in most cases) work like a magnifying-glass... I'm using this "tactic" myself (well - minus 6 dpt makes things appear VERY small)... Works great

      @michaelkeller5008@michaelkeller50087 жыл бұрын
    • Nah, he's just nearsighted. If he were shortsighted he'd probably be dead by now. And yes, when I take a wristwatch apart and put it back together I tend to take my glasses off if I'm not using a loupe.

    • @@nikkishins A agree with this. I think he knew what it was as well. I also do appreciate the fact that Michael is one of those people who will jump at the opportunity to show he doesn't know something. It's a good characteristic that a lot of "smart people" could learn from. It's okay to not know everything. It's not okay to willingly be ignorant of everything or pretend like you knew something for the sake of posterity. We all have embarrassing moments where our lack of knowledge or understanding shines through. Own it. Change it. Learn from it.

      @dlysele@dlysele7 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah glasses can be expensive. If you're ordering on high street, and you want the best lenses, you're gonna pay about 500€ for just the lenses. And then, it's kind of a no-brainer to spend an extra 200€ or more for frames, because what the heck. And then of course you've got insurance, it's pretty cheap, but it doesn't exactly cover somebody getting to work on your glasses with a Dremel. And the worst part is that if you need new ones made, you get to wait for a few weeks. Whether you're paying 20€ or 800€, you're all in the same queue. And then it could take weeks till you get used to the new ones, and then you never want to take those off.

    • chemistry? I have never seen Adam less interested in holding a conversation with someone - he was entirely focused on the task at hand. normally in a one-day build, Adam's assistant would be asking about the process so the audience knows what's going on. here instead Michael was literally telling his life story. hoo da fuk cares. Does Michael even know why he's being filmed? Michael's weird obsession with his ruined glasses was distracting - eyeglasses cost about as much as a pizza these days. So these have a mike in them now - go to Warby Parker or Zenni or whatever and get another pair. Michael's mansplaining about "three voices" was cringeworthy. Does he not think that Adam Savage, a bright guy who's been on TV for decades, doesn't understand the concept of room reverberations and bone conduction? I'll say one thing though this was seriously illuminating on how I should hold a conversation with someone who's uninteresting, chatty and not very bright, if I want to be polite and seem interested.

If our presbyopia level is higher than our myopia level, our near eyesight become bad. Idem, if we have an hypermetropic astigmatism. Obviously, we can have an hypermetropic or myopic astigmatism and presbiotia, in a same time.

But he didn't smudge the glasses:Cyanoacrylates will take forever to harden if you don't use either insta-set or sodium bicarbonate. The little spray bottle isn't solvent, it's insta-set accelerator - put it on ca glues and they harden instantly. (I read a forensic research paper that suggested cocaine would also work, but that's cost prohibitive.)

  • The self control required for Michael to remain calm while someone works on his glasses like that is commendable, I couldn't handle someone working on my means of vision like that

  • Felt to me like Adam wasn't too interested to talk about accents - or knowledgeable -, while Michael would've talked about it for hours. I'd love to talk about accents with Michael! :P

    • Paul J. Morton no, it was just that it's kind of basic knowledge to him, I saw Adam actually just being not interested at all and just playing along and feeling far above the whole thing.

    • I think Micheal would talk about anything for hours; he seems like the type of person that doesn't just do brief quips, you push a button and he dumps a book's worth of related knowledge.

    • To me it seemed he wasn't disinterested. He was working on something that takes concentration and it's a bit hard to do that and work with someone you haven't really worked with before being an introvert. I would be the same way.

    • I think Adam's reaction to Michael telling him he grew up drinking "Coke" was one of the most relatable moments I've seen for either of these guys.

  • These two often give me insight into things I never realized weren't quite as I thought they were. I never listen to myself as a recording but I often get understood as someone with a softer voice than I experience having, which to me sounds slightly more rich since I hear it as more basey because of bone conduction!
