The BEST portable HPA compressor EVER! a GX CS2 taken to all new heights.
IT’S FINALLY HERE! The GX CS2 Hybrid is born! To my sensibilities this project is MUCH better than a GX L2. Better battery, better charger, runs in more situations and if you already have DeWalt Lithium tools, much cheaper to boot! I had a lot of fun developing this build and I am really pleased with how it worked out. I made some mistakes along the way, they were just opportunities to learn, so you all don’t need to make the same mistakes I did. This is the portable "Tool Battery" based HPA compressor GX should have developed IMHO.
Better rarely comes cheaper, yet here it is! Send me some photos if you build one yourself, I’d love to see it. Let me know in the comments below what you think. For my money, this is now the absolute best value in a 12VDC portable HPA solutions for your valuable PCP airguns. You will need some basic hand and power tool skills, but you should not be intimidated, it was fun and easy to build. If you have not gotten a GX CS2 yet, you need to, links to those below too! Don’t let me have all the fun, jump in! Schematic available as a pdf on the Target Forge Website, look in the documents section. The handle delete part is also available as a 3D file for printing, or as a ready printed part.

I already have the crimpers, would likely make this mod available to folks not sure about the electricals. Let me know in the comments! You would likely need to modify the motor leads, but that might be all. Might actually be a good use for a Wago wire connector... Hmmmm....
I'm local and intersted!
And first in line, I'm told...
Yes please!
Yes Please, Great video on an excellent idea!
Would be interested in a kit that is suitable for Bosch Professional 18V battery’s, or can i just order the same (except for the battery adapter holder) products through your affiliate links?
I'm not sure how you are going to top this one!
Thank you! That means a lot!
I'm just getting into PCP air rifles. After purchasing a manual pump I'm realizing I'm not the tough guy I thought I was! I want to build this pump configuration but my power source would be Milwaukee. As all my cordless tools are such. I would assume Milwaukee makes a battery holder. And yes I would use there comparable battery. Great video, excellent content! 👍
Love the build and love the video.Try this pro-tip sometime; after wrapping and tearing (or cutting) electrical tape, put another wrap in reverse direction. As the primary wrap loosens / shrinks, the second wrap holds the final primary wrap in place.
THANKS Flip! You are today's official "Pro Tip!". I love it! I also use Scotch 33+ as I have found it be MUCH better than anything else I've tried.
I might mount the battery base and dc-dc converter/fuse into a separate enclosure so I don't need to modify the compressor. The agent for the compressors in my country probably won't honour the warranty if it's modified, but I'll still be able to run it "off the grid".
I had a similar idea, I even added a digital pressure setting function to mine. Would you like to see that video?
@@TargetForge that would be great
Great job my friend!
Thank you very much!
Great idea. If you make up kits I’d be interested here in the U.K.
Absolutely amazing project unfortunately Im from India parts are not easily available 🙈
Sorry to hear that
Thank goodness that I looked for more of your videos. I just got a GX CS2 and did not know where to put the air filter. That thing in the black metal tube. I see now in the screen in the lower right that it goes after the pressure guage. The instructions that come with this leave something to be desired.
AGREED!
I would rather purchase one that was already completed. I not good at all with electrical anything. I can trip a breaker but nothing else. How easy would your kit be?
I don't know if you've ever talked about your background but you're a true inventor and I would argue, genius. My only hesitation in doing this mod is that I'm in the 1 year warranty period for my GX CS2 so if something goes wrong, the manufacturer won't help me after they see the modifications. Do you think I should be concerned with that as long as I following the recommended run interval advice and the lubrication/maintenance advice you provide? Are parts available to buy for the compressor should things go awry?
First of all, there is NO US SERVICE for these units. The warranty is you telling them it broke, and they either send you parts, or a replacement unit. No one at GX, at this time, will ever see your broken compressor. Nothing on this mod/hack stresses the unit in anyway. Same input voltage, same RPM, just smarter power options, that's it. I was selling parts on my site, life has forced me to put that on hold temporarily. I hope to have the GX parts side of the business back in action by the end of November. Prices will go up a bit, because it's the world we live in now, but I expect to get the parts business rolling again shortly.
@@TargetForge Thanks for explaining all that. My compressor is still in the box waiting for my PCPs to arrive. I will definitely be buying my parts through you. Quick question, I didn't buy the Amazon 3 or 4 year warranty because I heard the warranty is also not what it seems. It basically amounts to replacing the unit once in those 3-4 years from what I read in the reviews. Did I make the right decision?
Well, I was hoping you wouldn't go down this road, lol, but you are invested in DeWalt tools so I get it, I guess... don't want to argue about which is better, but love my Makita tools, and batteries, and love my L2 compressor, I mean how simple and wonderful, I love it to death and the small amount of cost to include the wall unit, is a better value for me, you seem to have plenty of tools and parts... I do love your videos on this pump, and hope you move on to upgrades I may use... Keep going dude...!
It's all good. Just REALLY keep an eye on that knock off battery and the charger that came with it. I've heard things... True Makita stuff is nice, but they really seem to be lagging the leaders in this space these days, their service is probably best in class though. Not being able to run it off my vehicles was the bigger issue for me, and likely a lot of outdoorsmen as well. Thanks for your comment.
I'm an aluminum installer in central florida and I've tried dewalt and had to take them back they cant hold up to 1000's of screws per day only makita does ,they're for commercial use dewalts for home owners ,but I love the show.
VERY Cool! Question, what is the correct Powerpole cable I need to run off the included GX CS2 inverter? I am assuming one end is Powerpole and the other are clamps? Thank you!
Not sure I understand your question. The AC supply has posts. I used ring terminals and made a cable for mine. You can also reuse the clip leas set and connectorize the other end
Hi is there any chance you could do a wiring diagram using original switch, Cheers Steve
Not really sure what you are looking for. Do you seek a wiring diagram for a stock unit? Or are you thinking performing this hack with the stock switch? Which I would not recommend.
@@TargetForge its ok ,did as per your video ,all working great .🙂🙂
Cool project. I have the CS3 with the dual 18v batteries. Do you have a fix for using Ryobi 18v batteries? I have lots of those. Thanks!
Took a quick look and the reason no adapters seem to exist going from Ryobi to Makita, is the physical interface of the Ryobi pack. That elevated horn where the contacts are makes it more challenging. They may have adapters out there, but did not find them. Good luck!
@@TargetForge thanks for trying. You're the man!
Only issue I have with this is as soon as you turn off the compressor your fans turn off too.
Not really a problem, mimics the behavior of the factory unit perfectly (L2 Variant). Prevents you from running your battery into the ground. You COULD simply add a switch for fan control, but forgetting to turn them on could get dicey.
More so just so it works like the stock unit when power is plugged in the fans automatically come on and stay on til you unplug the power. Not knocking what you’ve done as I made mine from a Milwaukee 9ah battery. Just would love fans as soon as power is connected thru battery or external power source. On another note. Did you know using a large air dryer (mine is the 13.5” long x 2” round) with a check valve make foster on the inlet side, acts like an accumulator for filling scuba tanks. In theory you’re only working against the seated ball valve and the small section of hose running to the air dryer. I filled my large scuba tank in 6 runs of 20 minutes each , last one being half hr, and only seen a max temp of 110 f measured at the side of the piston block.
In your use case, which I do not recommend for the CS2 as it really racks up the hours on the pump, you might consider a separate switch for the fans. The CS4 would be a much better choice for filling that big bottle and it would let you tend to other things during the fill. I love mine. I only use the CS2 for short, direct gun fills. Great to hear you built one! send some photos to me at bill@targetforge.net and we'll feature them on an upcoming video!@@seancarr7827
Does that seem in theory like I’m on the right track?
Not sure what theory you are referring to. Filling large bottles with a small compressor? Can't say I'm with you there. If you want to allow for a separate switch so you can control the fan operation? Certainly possible, but when used as intended, probably not needed as the L2 (the GX battery unit) does not allow separate fan control either. Would it be good to have if you need to run the pump for extended periods? Probably makes sense.
Can I just replace the 18v Makita style adapter to a Dewalt 20v/60v adapter on the L2 or L3? Wil the 20v/60v Dewalt flex volt battery in anyway harm a 18v L2 or L3 compressor motor?
You sure can! You will miss out on running it off of 12V, like a car or truck
@@TargetForge will have to give it a try. I needed up my 12v compressor trying to follow your video. I did something very wrong, I gave the compressor to my brother in law. He got it running again back to original setup. I'm all thumbs when it incomes to electrical stuff.
@@TargetForge messed up the compressor.
have new gx cs2 but only goes up to 1bar after 5 mins running on test with bung in , what should i be looking at thanks steve
The most common cause for this is a simple leak. You can make your own leak detection fluid with a cup of water and a few drops of dish soap. Apply at each joint and you will likely find your leak. Let me know how you make out.
@@wruehl thanks did that , no leaks and its holding air up to gauge , just d slowly gets to 1 bar then stops there
Ok, the next thing I would check is the lower High Pressure check valve assembly. With the machine upside-down the brass hex plug directly under the High Pressure piston should be taken apart carefully cleaned and inspected. Remove the plug, the spring and the poppet. How many hours are on this unit? Is it still under warranty?
@@TargetForge thanks will try this, it brand new , brought this privately
Hope you got a killer deal! Without the warranty they can be dicey.
would a 6amp 54/18 volt dewalt battery work aswell
I will assume that is a typo and you meant 20/18V 6A Dewalt battery? Less current = less run time. I run the giant batteries because I have them for my chain saw. They should work fine, might make an episode where I try different size batteries and see how many fills I get....
@@TargetForge no it's a 18volt/54volt 6 amp xr flex volt , maybe UK version is different
Actually the 18V is a slightly different cell chemistry and the UK market generally lags other markets. The only issue you may see is an earlier "cut off" due the DC/DC converter I used. The 20V battery had more headroom, and consequently will run longer before hitting the undervoltage shutoff on the converter. Having the auto cut off saves the battery from being discharged too far, which is good. Being 2 volts closer to that cutoff due to the 18V cell will likely cost you some amount of run time.
So, after 3 mo. Of use, I was told I could fill my scuba tank. It didn’t work. Now my compressor will only fill to 200 bar, or even a bit less. Then just continues to run with no more build up Help!
Hello Dave, I would recommend that A. you never tell anyone that you allowed someone to tell you you could fill a scuba bottle. and B. Contact Amazon for a warranty replacement if you cannot find a leak. Don't get fooled into thinking you can find the leak by feeling around or listening. Take the time and mix a cup of water and two drops of dish soap and check every single joint, don't forget the gauge and every QD. At three months old it is still under warranty.
@@TargetForge thanks for your help. After contacting Amazon and customer service, I examined my o rings more closely. I had recently replaced one, but not the other. It didn’t look bad, but sort of worn.
Can I please get the wire diagram

How is this cheaper than a gx l2? Are you not counting the cost of a cs2 if already owned? Right now, the l2 is a little cheaper than the cs2.
CS2 comes with the AC supply, AND you end up with a UL/CE listed charger and a MUCH better battery.
@Target Forge oh dang I forgot about the PSU lol. I'd prolly end up electrocution myself anyways lol
