  • So I'm wondering if players are serving so much harder as Andy describes, does this mean there is room again for more serve volleying? I can imagine with so many players being over 190cm and athletic, it would be hard to pass them behind a strong first serve, especially when returners are standing further and further behind the baseline. Players today are probably not been taught to serve volley but if it helps to win points or as a change up to someone who is "in the zone" it may have a role.

      @rbarreira2@rbarreira22 ай бұрын
    • @@rbarreira2 Wow , both players above 6'4" to even contemplate serve volleying. I wonder if it's all pragmatic (only way to win is to stay back) or whether that's the way they are being taught to play from young. If it's pragmatic, it's due to the racquet, balls and court so it's a conscious decision by the people that rule tennis and the sponsors that pay the money. If it's this, it's a shame since the powers decided that having all baseliners was a better product than having a variety of playing styles.

  • Murray isn´t quite correct in the serve-speed claim. In 1999, the men´s average 1st-serve speed throughout the 4 Majors was: Aus Open: 168kph Roland Garros: 160kph Wimbledon: 187kph US Open: 172kph Fast-forward to 2009, Murray´s 3rd full year on the tour, and speeds increased to the following: Aus Open: 182kph Roland Garros: 185kph Wimbledon: 186kph US Open: 183kph The figures in 2009 are relatively speaking, comparable to those, 14 years ago, in 2023: Aus Open: 192kph Roland Garros: 187kph Wimbledon: 185kph US Open: 190kph Variation in tennis ball density/weight, variable court-surface speeds from year to year, return-of-serve positioning on the court, return-of-serve ability.....so many factors to consider when stacking up _against_ the fact that players are servng faster, but I think the overall stats even themselves out.

    @livingtribunal4110@livingtribunal41102 ай бұрын
    • Wait but I mean from the speeds you listed there's a good 24-28kph from 99 to 23. Without any major changes in racket technology/balls/courts right? It's not like in Bjorn Borg's day where the whole racket was different the speed changes are purely down to players bulking up and hitting harder

  • Would give anything to hear who treated young Andy bad but then again his behavior was a lot like how Holger Rune behaves on court (for those of you who don’t remember young Murray) and Rune’s behavior has rubbed the likes of Djokovic, Wawrinka and even Casper Ruud, who by many accounts is the nicest player on tour, in the wrong way. I will say this: Murray, in the past, said that once he got to a certain point Federer would no longer invite him to practice and Murray did have a head to head edge over Fed for a few years early on. But it’s tough to see Roger treating anyone poorly, especially a peer, in any environment let alone in away from the court.
