  • Riding sidesaddle in full regalia?! I'm impressed! Thank you for showing all the layers in the clothing. I have done similar demonstrations and people are always amazed by the foundations. Of course I remember the old foundations departments in full service stores where one purchased bras, girdles, slips, panties for underwear in the mid 20th century.

  • Having watched a lot of these videos, I can now make full sense of a sentence Mrs. Bennett in 'Pride and Prejudice' says to Elizabeth about 'pin money'. Nowadays the phrase is used to describe a small but significant amount of cash kept on hand for buying things that fall somewhere between necessities and luxuries. In the context of the book, I realised it was meant quite literally, but until I watched these videos I never understood just how necessary and important pins were to a woman. I'm not sure when the manufacture of pins changed from being crafted individually ( and therefore being a rare and expensive commodity) to that of something made by a team of people each working one one step of the process ( speeding up production, increasing the quantity made and so lowering the price of each pin considerably) but I think it was in the 1700's ( I may be wrong). When I think how small dress-making pins are today, pins must have been something easily lost or broken, and so a woman would have needed a constant supply to keep her clothing properly secured... and the husband would have needed to make sure his wife had enough money to hand (pin-money!) to buy more pins as she wanted, and ensure his wife was properly and decently dressed!

  • my husband's great aunt had a very old house. we're talking 1800s or better. It had a separate room in the bedroom specifically for bathing/changing. I always did wonder why the wall had a bunch of old pins in it. Knowing it was to keep the clothing in place makes way better sense than anything i could have come up with.

  • After watching so many of your videos, I have to wonder if the misconception of taking forever to dress up comes from the fact that people have no idea how much clothing was made of different parts that you can just pin together. Because of how some of the clothing fits and there being no zippers and shit, period dress never made sense to me in how exactly it did get put on until I started watching your videos and doing some research for a novel I was writing.

    • @@BZANINOVICH Theres plenty of beautiful clothing made today, look at Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Erdem, hell some of Gucci recent stuff is pretty elaborate. If you are willing to spend the money there is plenty of elaborate fashion...although most people just wear the plebeian denim and cotton and guess what...most people in the 17th and 18th centuries also wore slopping torn and dirty clothes, its romanticized today. Most people didn't dress like this. So if you want to wear a beautiful gown today, you certainly can, either buy it from a designer or have something similar made by seamstresses.Look at people like Ulyanna Sergeenko on instagram, she dresses fabulous all the time. The problem today is, most people just want to fit in with everyone else and wear the same uniform that they think is socially appropriate.

This era in particular is one of the most popular for reenactors around here (for obvious reasons), and I can't help but wonder how a woman would be treated if she showed up in 1690s Boston wearing something like that. :P
