Does this mean that Germany doesn’t start the Second World War and remains peaceful, or does the Austrian Mustache man start a civil war in the country? There is only one way to find out, and the ending is brutal!

    • I'm pretty sure the union with Austria would still happen, but it would be done via referendum. Furthermore Italy and Germany would still be allies. And Germany would be ally with China instead of Japan at that time thanks to the events in WW1. The Spanish blunder would still happen, which would serve to train up the German forces again, and it's potentially possible that Germany would intervene on China's side against Japan and Manchuria. Germany and Italy would be almost identical in terms of their policies, so, as you mentioned, there would be no laws civilian casualties.

Out of the 100 main party members 5 were jewish. In the march of Rome, about 150 jews marched with mussolini. • The sudentenland crisis was more than just Hitler postering and demanding. The sudenten germans had been trying to be part of Germany since 1919. With or without Hitler they would have continued. Only encouraged by any potential union of Germany and Austria. It is however unlikely a Germany who had a civil war would try to push for annexations. So the sudenten crisis wouldn't likely happen in 1938, but a crisis would happen eventually and the league of nations would be forced to do some kind of compromise even if it's just regional autonomy for the sudenten germans.

  • Lithuania wouldn't have allied with the Allies for as long as Poland didn't return the Vilnius region, even if there was an immediate danger from the Soviets. Plus historically Lithuania's and Poland's relations were non-existant, with Lithuania refusing any diplomatic ties with Poland until late 1939 because of the occupation of Vilnius region. If Poland offered to return the region then I'd see it as a possibility, but in no way would Lithuania agree to join Poland or to reform the Commonwealth, they just had zero good relations at that time and were mortal enemies. In your scenario I'd imagine Lithuania would ally with anyone who would promise the return of the Vilnius region (Allies or even the Soviets), but in no way would they join Poland. It's the same as saying if Germany joined France after losing so much territory because of them after WW1.

    @Counteris16@Counteris16Ай бұрын
    • Well, then Lithuania would prefer to get invaded by the USSR. I don't get that point. I united Poland and Lithuania after that, so you can assume that Poland can return this land and then unite.

      @rewriting-history@rewriting-historyАй бұрын
    • @@rewriting-history But that's literally what happened in our timeline. The Soviets occupied eastern Poland and gave an ultimatum to Lithuania - allow our militaries, purge the anti-communist politicians and install a soviet-friendly government. In return they were to receive the Vilnius region. Everyone knew it was a trap but Lithuania accepted nevertheless because their sole goal for 2 decades was the return of the Vilnius region no matter what. After WW1 Poland offered Lithuania to unite, but Lithuania refused because the Polish didn't agree to give any dual state rights, Lithuania would've only been a province in Poland, not as in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. So after WW1 if things went differently I could see them uniting, but not after a bloody war and occupation of their capital for 2 decades, even if they agreed to return it as in your scenario, Poland was the number one enemy of Lithuania, you just can't fix that with the return of the region.

    • @@rewriting-history I have a story for you!! In an alternate history, let's explore a scenario where NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) takes a unified and decisive stance during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, altering the course of the Cold War: As tensions escalated between the United States and the Soviet Union over the discovery of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, NATO convened an emergency summit in Brussels. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, NATO members set aside their differences and agreed on a coordinated response to the crisis. Led by the United States, NATO issued a firm ultimatum to the Soviet Union, demanding the immediate removal of all nuclear missiles from Cuba. Backed by the collective military strength of NATO's member states, including the deployment of additional forces to strategic locations, the alliance made it clear that any further provocation would be met with decisive action. The Soviet leadership, faced with a united front from NATO and the prospect of a catastrophic conflict, chose to back down. In a dramatic televised address, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev announced the dismantling of the missile sites in Cuba and the withdrawal of Soviet forces from the island. The world breathed a collective sigh of relief as the immediate threat of nuclear war subsided. The NATO alliance emerged from the crisis strengthened and more cohesive than ever before, demonstrating the power of collective security and diplomatic resolve in the face of existential threats. The resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis had profound implications for the course of the Cold War. The United States and its NATO allies emerged with renewed confidence in their ability to confront Soviet aggression, while the Soviet Union, chastened by the experience, pursued a more cautious approach to its foreign policy. In the years that followed, NATO continued to serve as a bulwark against Soviet expansionism, promoting stability and deterring further acts of aggression. The Cuban Missile Crisis became a pivotal moment in the Cold War, not just for averting nuclear catastrophe but for reaffirming the importance of cooperation and unity in the pursuit of peace and security.

  • Here's an alternative timeline exploring what might have happened if Wilhelm III became President of Germany in 1932: 1932: January 30: Wilhelm III is elected as President of Germany following the resignation of Paul von Hindenburg. February 27: The Reichstag fire occurs, but unlike in our timeline, Wilhelm III takes a more moderate approach and does not exploit the event to suppress political opposition. March 5: Reichstag elections proceed without major disruptions. While the Nazi Party still gains significant seats, the moderate parties can maintain a majority with Wilhelm III's support. April 10: Wilhelm III, recognizing the growing tensions in Europe, seeks diplomatic solutions to prevent further conflict. He initiates talks with France and Britain to address the issues of disarmament and territorial disputes. 1933: January 30: Adolf Hitler's rise to power is stalled as Wilhelm III continues to assert his authority and resist attempts to appoint him as Chancellor. Instead, a coalition government is formed with moderate leaders from various parties. March 23: Wilhelm III signs the Enabling Act, but with significant limitations on its scope and duration. This prevents the Nazi Party from consolidating absolute power. July 1: The Night of the Long Knives is averted as Wilhelm III intervenes to prevent the purge of political opponents within Germany. 1934: June 30: In a speech marking the first anniversary of his presidency, Wilhelm III reaffirms his commitment to democracy and constitutional governance, earning widespread support both domestically and internationally. November 9: Wilhelm III survives an assassination attempt by a fringe extremist group, further solidifying his image as a unifying figure and protector of democratic values. 1935: March 16: Wilhelm III announces a series of social and economic reforms aimed at alleviating the hardships caused by the Great Depression, including increased public works programs and welfare initiatives. September 15: The Nuremberg Laws are never enacted, as Wilhelm III opposes any legislation that discriminates against minorities and undermines individual freedoms. 1936: February 6: Germany hosts the Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, showcasing the country's stability and commitment to international cooperation under Wilhelm III's leadership. July 18: The Spanish Civil War erupts, prompting Wilhelm III to advocate for a policy of non-intervention and diplomacy to prevent the conflict from escalating into a wider European war. 1937: April 28: Wilhelm III delivers a speech condemning the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, urging the League of Nations to take decisive action to uphold international law and prevent further aggression. November 9: The Munich Conference concludes with a diplomatic resolution to the Sudetenland crisis, with Wilhelm III playing a key role in facilitating negotiations between Germany, France, Britain, and Czechoslovakia. 1938: March 12: Anschluss with Austria is peacefully achieved through diplomatic negotiations, with Wilhelm III ensuring the rights and autonomy of the Austrian people are respected. September 1: Germany joins other European nations in condemning the Munich Agreement, denouncing the appeasement of Nazi aggression and reaffirming their commitment to preserving peace and stability in Europe. 1939: March 15: In response to increasing tensions in Europe, Wilhelm III proposed the establishment of a European security pact aimed at preventing aggression and promoting collective security among European nations. September 1: Despite escalating tensions, Germany, under Wilhelm III's leadership, commits to a policy of neutrality in the looming conflict between Poland and Nazi Germany, urging both sides to pursue peaceful resolutions through dialogue. 1940: April 9: Germany remains neutral as Nazi forces invade Denmark and Norway. Wilhelm III offers humanitarian aid to the affected countries and works with neutral nations to provide support for refugees fleeing the conflict. June 10: As Nazi Germany launches its invasion of France, Wilhelm III calls for international solidarity in defence of democratic values and offers support to the French government in exile led by Charles de Gaulle. 1941: June 22: Nazi Germany launches Operation Barbarossa, invading the Soviet Union. Despite pressure from some quarters, Wilhelm III maintains Germany's neutrality, emphasizing the importance of preserving peace and stability in Europe. December 7: The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor drew the United States into World War II. Wilhelm III expresses condolences to President Roosevelt and reaffirms Germany's commitment to supporting the Allies through humanitarian aid and diplomatic channels. 1942: June 6: Allied forces launch Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy. Wilhelm III offers logistical support and intelligence cooperation to the Allies, facilitating the success of the operation and the subsequent liberation of Western Europe. November 24: The Tehran Conference brings together Allied leaders to discuss post-war reconstruction and the establishment of international institutions to prevent future conflicts. Wilhelm III attends as a key mediator, advocating for a vision of a united and peaceful Europe. 1943: January 31: The Battle of Stalingrad concludes with a decisive Allied victory, marking a turning point in the war on the Eastern Front. Wilhelm III calls for negotiations to end hostilities and work towards a durable peace settlement in Europe. July 25: The Allied leaders, including Wilhelm III, meet in Potsdam to discuss the post-war division of Europe and the reconstruction of war-torn nations. The Potsdam Agreement outlines principles for democratic governance, human rights, and international cooperation. 1944: June 6: The Allied invasion of Normandy, known as D-Day, successfully liberates France from Nazi occupation. Wilhelm III praises the courage and sacrifice of the Allied forces and renews his commitment to building a democratic and peaceful Europe. December 16: The Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive on the Western Front, is repelled by Allied forces. Wilhelm III emphasizes the need for reconciliation and reconstruction in the aftermath of the war, calling for unity and solidarity among nations. 1945: May 8: Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) is celebrated as Nazi Germany surrenders unconditionally to the Allies. Wilhelm III delivers a speech calling for forgiveness and reconciliation, laying the foundation for a new era of peace and cooperation in Europe. August 6: The United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leading to Japan's surrender and the end of World War II. Wilhelm III joins global efforts to rebuild war-torn nations and address the humanitarian consequences of the conflict. This alternative timeline presents a scenario where Wilhelm III's presidency in 1932 led to a more peaceful and cooperative Europe, with Germany playing a constructive role in promoting democracy, human rights, and international stability.

  • I think instead of directly annexing austria Wilhelm could also just empower the Habsburgs. Getting Hungary under Habsburg controll would be relatively easy, and with a monarchy to the north austria would propably agree to a Habsburg return too. This would also make gaining power over Chechoslovakia and maybe parts of the balkans much easier, as Habsburg reunification would likely provoke the Entane much less than german annexation. There wold already be decent relations between Italy and Austria, as the betrail during the Anschluss never happens, giving the new alliance another member. Hard to predict what happens from there, but maybe Austrian and Italian expansion in the Balkans would cause the French to go to war again, starting a new world war

  • I think Wilhelm III would buy the Saarland from France, and WW2 would start because Wilhelm wants Alsace-Lorraine back. I could see a Germany-Italy-Hungary axis beating France and Britain on their own, with France agreeing on a peace deal ceding Alsace-Lorraine, the lands Germany lost to Belgium and all former German african colonies back to Germany (and possibly Luxembourg too) + Italy would get some (but not all, probably just Corsica and Savoy) of their claims against France. The peace treaty would be signed the MOMENT the Soviets get cocky and invade Poland. The Soviets are then defeated (obviously). I doubt there would be a 'cold war', at least not one like our timeline where both sides have nukes. Germany emerges as a strong authoritarian state, only rivalled by Britain, a victorious Japan and a still extremely isolationist USA. I think decolonisation would be a lot slower due to much less communist agitation. It's definetly a very interesting world! I would rate your scenario a 6/10 in accuracy.

The ultranationalist in his coalition would still demand anchluss and Studentenland and none of that would change. The only thing that would be different is his policy against Poland. Can you explain why he would go against his colition partners and supporters by not expanding German sphere in central europe (something even his father wanted) and instead go to war with the allies who didn't even want war historically?

  • Realism: 9/10. The germans certainly couldn't have done well at war without the extreme focus on rearmament, the seizure of jewish assets and the annexation of czechoslovakia none of which could happen with wilhelm iii in charge. However you are ignoring 2 things. Number one: the position of president really didn't have that much authority, being chancellor was more important Number two: the soviets had one of the worlds largest armies and tank forces and a really strong industry. If they went against essentially the 1939 allies whom stilk hadn't fully rearmed and still thought the war was going to be like world war one, they'd probably take at least all of continental europe. Especially as they wouldn't be the ones being invaded so the purge wouldn't matter because they'd recover from the purge first. Also with the soviets invading they're not losing their industry and russia is a lot further away from britain than germany so the bombing campaign wouldn't happen. Also the soviets wouldn't ally with japan so america joining the war is significantly less likely. So overall i think the soviets would probably dominate continental europe and then start expanding into european colonies in the middle east and south asia before eventually getting halted somewhere with the war ending in essentially a soviet victory by default due to an inability of either side to advance.

  • I could see a scenario in which Wilhelm doesn't antagonise the Allies. Perhaps he would portray himself as a Crusader against communism, thus getting the Allies' blessing to rearm. After build up, the New German Empire could invade the Soviets with the aid of many of its neighbours. The coalition would crush the Soviets and Eastern Europe would be rearranged. Perhaps he never attacks the Allies.

    • Russia became communist because of world war 1, that doesn’t make sense… If he didn’t antagonize the allies world war 1 doesn’t start the way it did and Russia isn’t gobbled up by communism.
