  • Singapore isn't socialist. That is the whole point of the short film. Unfortunately, it is not a great example as it is also a single-party authoritarian city state that acted as the model for post-Mao China. Singaporeans have very little personal freedom, and so I am led to believe, they can be imprisoned for smoking a cigarette in public.

    • " they can be imprisoned for smoking a cigarette in public." Are you delusional or what? Name a person who has been imprisoned for smoking in public. The Singapore court cases are open online for anyone to view. Go on....

    • Yeah, I will tell you that when you tell me when you estimate that Singapore will change its ruling political party through the ballot box.

    • You need to read about what LKY did to the communists before you start comparing Singapore to a post-Mao China. No one goes to jail for smoking. There are opposition parties, but being FPTP, like the UK, it’s difficult.

    • @Gautam81S Deng made it clear that the Singapore model was examined carefully and in part copied by his regime when wishing to adopt a form of market economy. The principle attraction being that they could adopt the productivity and profitability of the West without the CCP relinquishing power. Singapore is an authoritarian state. Ther has not been a change of government since independence over 60 years ago. Don't please give me a load of crap about the electoral system. In a free society, people change governments when they get fed up with them. Are you telling me that the PAP has made no mistakes over 60 years. So what you allow "other political parties"? Big deal. So does Putin, and so did the dictatorships of Eastern Europe before 1989. The real test of a democracy is if the opposition is allowed to openly attack the government and actively campaign amongst the electorate for its replacement. Somehow, I doubt that this how it works in Singapore. Finally, you point out that Lee was not a communist. Fine, I never said he was, but then neither was Franco or Mussolini. Which may explain why the PAP continues to use the lighting flash as its party symbol? Grow up and face facts, Singapore is authoritarian, and you can't change the government.

    • @@user-ue8nw6ln1u have you ever lived in Singapore? I would bet not. I’ve voted there. Elections are independently found to be free and fair. Elections are not manipulated as you suggest. In the UK and US there’s only 2 parties too. You can’t really vote for any change either cos the parties resemble each other. Maybe you should take your own advice and grow up and be a bit more pragmatic. When LKY took over all those years ago, there was so much poverty, swampland and housing was a lot of slums. Electricity was available one hour a day. Having changed so dramatically in the first 50 years of independence why would you want to even change government? PAP did a great job then. Now is different and more opposition is coming in. Popular vote for PAP is trending down. If it was all manipulated that wouldn’t happen
