    • I am pretty sure the instant graphics toggle was inspired by the Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap remake that Lizardcube developed. That game also has also been remade/remastered extremely faithful to the original. (Edit because people gave me a heads up, It could also be inspired by the Halo Aniversary edition which also had the graphics toggle.)

  • This remaster has been done so beautifully, so faithfully that it takes my breath away. I grew up playing these 3 games and KNOW these environments so well, I never thought I'd see them redone in such a tasteful and respectful way. It's also worth mentioning, the remasters run in the SAME ENGINE from almost 30 years ago. I haven't seen anyone mentioning that in all the reviews I watched so far. Aspyr's work here is truly a labor of love.

    • They're right about the engine, apparently. In the PlayStation Blog article of January 16th 2024, Aspyr says that "At the outset, we knew we would use the original source code and engine. Magic can’t simply be rebuilt. A critical feature for any updates we made was to allow the users to toggle back to the original look and feel for Tomb Raider I, II, and III."

Whereas GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas needed a remake because it does feel out of place looking at the jarring cutscenes or expressions being delivered in such a bizarre way. Rockstar failed to deliver whereas Tomb Raider 1-3 remaster did everything right. Playing GTA Definitive Edition looks as appealing as playing Fortnite does basically. They obviously had to be recorded in much better quality but then sampling was lowered to fit in memory easily or whatever the limit was back int he day. All I would love is to restore the quality. But it's not that appealing honestly so far. Need to see how it is TR2 cause I haven't played it yet. And guns sounded pretty rough it that game.

However it would've been cool if they'd refined some of the sounds and made it optional to switch between them, like in the Spyro remasters.

  • I love the look of this and the fact it’s true to the original in terms of controls. Even with these graphics I still think it oozes an atmosphere that many modern games actually can lack sometimes. The sparse audio and encounters enhances this tenfold. In a modern game you’d either have a million enemies or endless chatter, but these games embrace the emptiness that really makes you feel like you’re in a remote undiscovered place of antiquity.

You get three games, expansions, secret levels, and the ability to switch between the classic polygonal graphics and modern graphics. Aspyr did a wonderful job when it comes to preserving the feel and vibe of the original Tomb Raider titles, while also giving them a modern coat of paint. I'm very impressed by what they've done with the collection. Solid work once again! As always, I really appreciate the hard work, passion, and dedication! They need to fix bugs like lighting (more darker in certain areas like the original), the look of the water that looks almost static and this stupid head movements of the characters during speaking. • It's really great to see a remaster that pays a lot of respect to the source material, and aside from a few issues which you point out I am extremely impressed with how well the remaster stays true to the artistic vision of the originals. Lara's model might be slightly cartoony but it was immediately recognisable. For me, the most impressive aspect is what they managed to achieve while being so constrained by the original level geometry; as you highlight and anyone familiar will be aware, it's integral to the gameplay.

No maps, no GPS, no tutorial, no help in puzzles, tank controls and no checkpoints. The original Tomb Raiders are brutal! I wanna see the new players generation running to KZhead to try and beat the games or giving up without even trying 😂 I still don't know how i was able to beat the 5 og titles back in the day in the original PlayStation. TR 2 and 4 are my favorites.

  • Great video, you really went above and beyond with the coverage. Looking forward to playing this soon. I agree with the water, I'm a bit disappointed about it. The texture looks too clean and transparent in many locations, and it also seems like the water could do with a bit more difference in colour grading both looking in from above and out from underneath in some scenarios. Interestingly it seems as if the classic visuals have had the water downgraded too, since I noticed in other gameplay clips that the warping effect has been removed. I figure they didn't want to include that in the remastered visuals though, as the seams sometimes breaking between geometry would probably look more noticeable. Still, I hope they can come up with a way to make the water look better with the remastered visuals in an update.

  • Hello, I am not familiar with your channel, but I would like to say that I deeply appreciate this video and it's comprehensive coverage of the quality and substance of this new remaster. Maybe it sounds silly, but the original three Tomb Raider titles were SUCH a foundational aspect of my childhood and experience with games, I had a lot of apprehension regarding the substance and play experience of a remaster ... ... not only am i largely impressed with the faithfulness with which these titles have been treated, but your video has basically answered all of my questions, and allayed all of my concerns, prior to purchase. Really enjoyed the structure, pace, and editing of your video, as well. TLDR Extremely informative, I felt CORE childhood memories unlocked watching this (no pun intended). Some of the remake areas look truly, insanely good, and I hope some of those disappointing choices (such as the reduced visibility of where you can traverse the environment) get amended, in the future. Thank you for this!!

    • And the warping effect when looking in / out of the water. Of course along with the 30 FPS cap (though maybe that's technical and the remastered visuals are using a wrapper to go higher). I was kind of hoping these could be a definitive way to play the originals with classic visuals, but it seems we might be better off using fan made fixes where you can customise these visual options. Of course I'm going to play these remasters for the remastered visuals anyway, but it would have been nice if the classic visuals got more love.

I just love the classic style of audio, but the remaster is just as good. The remaster is ...crunchier, but I still like it. This remaster series is the type of remaster I want to see for any classic game that I played and loved. Or didn't love, just because it is so accurate. Gotta say though, the fire in Tomb Raider 3 was not my favorite. I really liked 1 because I could tell that it was fire, it made sense. But in 3 I would touch this lightly colored gas and wonder why I died. Young me was not the smartest child, but I still like old fire better. Excellent video, I bought this on Switch because your video reminded me of why I liked playing (the first levels) of this game series.
