2020 BMW 750Li vs 2001 BMW 7-Series // Luxury Meets Legend

2020 ж. 21 Қаң.
2 223 389 Рет қаралды

This is 2020 BMW 750Li, and it meets its grandfather, the E38 2001 740i, which costs far less and is rear wheel drive. Both are V8s, and both are BMW flagships of their time. But can the old one stack up, and is the new one worth the massive premium? James and Thomas jump behind the wheel of both to experience them and discuss them inside and out. Watch and enjoy. • Steven Strain I think all manufacturers have sealed transmission now which imo is stupid. I’m a Toyota dealer mechanic and all their vehicles except for the Yaris has sealed transmissions. I have a BMW 335i as a summer car and that too has a sealed unit but I change the fluid every 70k.

    • Steven Strain True. Toyota’s newer vehicles are not as well made as the previous ones and I think that goes to all car manufacturers. I think they want people’s cars to break down after the warranty period so they could trade it in for a new model while it’s in their shop. And I do see that often.

It was so well put together you could feel it in the drive, the seats, the suspension, the buttons.. everything. Though my Mazda 3 is much newer and has more technology, for a drive the bmw was a better ride and 30 years older. It made my Mazda 3 drive, look and feel cheap lol plus I also don’t think my Mazda would last or stay in as good of condition as the bmw has for 30 years

New doesn’t necessarily mean better styled, and if you had an immaculate 2001 7-series for direct comparison it would hold up a lot better.

  • 5:09 I can in fact say that steering wheel is the E39 5 series M sport steering wheel. However the 7 did get a 3 spoke steering wheel, it just looked a bit different. Also I’m in agreement with most of the comment section that I prefer the E38 over the new generation. I own one currently and it has over 242k miles on it. My dad’s E38 has 320k miles on it. BMWs of this era could never hit that kind of mileage without needing serious engine or transmission work. I’ve even driven the new 7 and even though it has more power, it just doesn’t compare to the old one. The E38 is just way more planted to the ground and you feel like you’re getting an actual driving experience when the new 7 just feels way too floaty. EDIT: Hold on, they said the E38 went 0-60 in 6.8? Almost everywhere I’ve looked I’ve seen 5.9 for the 740i. I don’t think they were correct on that regard.

  • The crayon smell comes from the adhesive they use to put all the interior pieces together, BMW, Merc, Volkswagen and Audi all used it so that’s why they all smell like that when they’re older.

    @1Reddd@1Reddd4 жыл бұрын
    • It's so weird that some E38s completely avoid developing the crayon smell. My personal 1998 740iL has the crayon smell but my 1997 750iL does not have it. Neither does my dad's 2001 740i, or my previous 2001 740iL. My first E38 was also a 1998 and it had the crayon smell too.

      @michu6777@michu67774 жыл бұрын
    • mitchgo _ A lot of it has to do with how it was stored. If it was garage kept most of its life it’s less likely to develop the crayon smell. But if it sits outside the heat is what causes the adhesive to make that smell after a while.

I was a fool for getting rid of it, but the reality is that you need to plan on $1500 in repairs above and beyond the maintenance costs. So it's a car that costs $2500/year to keep on the road. This was peak BMW. It's been a sh** show with them ever since.

My most recent 740i is a black on black sport model I picked up from California, and my friend and I 6 speed manual swapped it with the transmission out of a 540i. Coupled with some modern interior upgrades like new speakers and Bluetooth, it's 100% the best car I've ever owned or daily driven. My biggest complaint with my long wheelbase was that while it was great for cruising, once you got to a fun road it was just too huge. The short wheelbase with manual however feels like a mini M5. If you have 8k laying around, get one and do the swap. You will not be disappointed.
