Dr. Rowe shows how to get rid of calf muscle pain at home, using NO SPECIAL EQUIPMENT!
In this video, we're going to deal with tight, achy, dull, painful calves (aka gastrocnemius muscle). It's going to broken up into a very easy to follow three-part guide.
In the first part, we're going to focus on a wonderful self-massage technique. It might end up
becoming your new favorite therapy!
Second, we're going to get everything loosened up and moving better with great stretching exercises for the calves.
The third part, we're going to focus on strengthening the gastrocnemius muscle with very easy-to-do exercises that may help lead to less instances of calf pain in the future.
All of these exercises can be done AT HOME, don't require any special equipment and may give quick relief, even in as little as 30 SECONDS.

I have been struggling with calf pain after about the first few hundred yards of walking and it made walking quite miserable- something to be endured. I’ve just come back from a 3 mile walk in under an hour with very little calf pain after rubbing oil and the spoon handle up and down my calf. That’s quite a dramatic change. I get restless legs at night which drives me mad so I’m going to try that before bed now too. Thank you 🙏

I wish I saw this video over the weekend. I had tight and very painful calves and could not walk on my heels. I used a foam roller and did some calf stretches and had them massaged. Finally I ended up using a magnesium muscle rub and capsaicin with a little heat. The muscles were able to relax a bit and I continued with stretches. Now I can walk again!! Thanks for this video. It gives me more ways to stretch. Warning use Capsaicin sparingly!

From @familyrunsclub Thanks! APRIL 14TH was jersey city marathon and i had to stop at halfway due to pain. An hour later i could barely walk. After doing this exercise 1 time only, my pain in calf, achilles tendon and upper foot have reduced. Will keep doing this for several days!!

72 hours thinking I had a calf strain after an easy 25 KM Friday and playing football last minute Saturday, tried absolutely everything from icing to rolling a tennis ball and nothing worked. Tried this last night and cannot believe the results, walking without a limp and ankles / feet instantly relieved with now only 1 x minor knot in the calve to continue stretching - thank you so so much!!!

Omg thank you. I work as an correctional officer in a prison and we do alot of walking/standing for hours & hours. I'm a heavy set male 5'9 tall and 260ib too. I always get leg cramp behind my leg muscle. My wife usually have to massage my legs to help relief my leg cramp pain. But after seeing u use a spoon i try it and feel so much better

what a great video! Another twist on the same idea is to have one's heal on the floor and one's toes on the yoga block and then lean forward for a calf stretch ?
I have proximal hamstring tendinopathy that starts up every now and then. I play soccer every weekend and had finally gotten rid of it by adjusting my running stride. Well last week I forgot all my adjustments and it started up again. And the next day I walked 5 miles which was difficult but it was ok. Apparently I was most likely adjusting for the pain in my hamstring and must have been focusing on using more of my calf muscle to walk. I woke up the next morning with a super strained calf. My calf felt like a rock. I did what you suggested and I’m back to walking without that super crampy stretched rubber band feeling. Thank you soooooo much!!🎉😊

My physiotherapist did the spoon technique to me but she used different tools. I didn't know that I can perform the same technique by just using the spoon and when I tried it, it felt exactly like how my therapist did! It works like a wonder!

See, I've been to a lot of physiotherapists now for a joint and muscle issues now. It's unbelievable how none of them have ever recommended the spoon/butter knife rubbing method. It works so well

I have a question though, I have a pain below the foot between 3rd and 4th toe that appears mainly while playing football (around 1 hour after, I usually play 2 hours and the last 30 min are really difficult because of this pain). Could it be related to tight calf muscle? Note that I had ACL surgery about 1 year ago and I am 43 yrs old... This pain is a bit demoralizing because I have been back playing my favourite sport in the last 7 to 8 months, but since then got many relatively small injuries, calf sprain, quad tear (both at the other leg). So I wonder if stretching the calf could help with this particular problem?!

This just started to happen to me only on my right leg from the knee down to my foot. A lot of heal pain. Been checked out I have a neuropathy but I massage it and use a vibrating massage machine for circulation been dealing with this for over a month. Also seems to effect me at night the most when laying down. I also have restless leg syndrome too. I’m 53 it sucks getting old! However I will give it shot!

My right calf was quivering off and on with kinda sharp pain while in bed. I drew my left leg up a little so my left knee was up. Then, I placed my right calf over top of my left knee and worked it or massaged it over my knee. It worked pretty well. Maybe that's a new massage for calves for you.
All of them are great but my fav. Is the gua sha. I bought a jade stone especially for gua Sha and I was hardly taking it out of my dresser drawer till now! I woke up with a charlie horse in my calf and the next morning went straight to you for help. Ty so much. I do have this ? - when I wake up and do the natural body stretch that we all do, I have to be careful or I get a charlie horse and even in my rib cage? Why? Stretching feels so good but this is really hendering me.

Dr Rowe, awesome video and will give these ones a try specially the spoon. I'm really struggling to find the answer and keen for any advice for area to the outer of the calf just below the calf (either side of the Achilles)? I get pain there when I start running and the pain goes after 2-3km. there is no pain before i start to run but tbh i don't know what I'll get until i start: I do self massage, roll (glutes and hamstrings), calf raises and bridges (will try the heels up next time). I run 3 x a week (30-35km in total 1 fast is 20-21 min 5km and the other 2 steady state). I wear compression socks after runs. decent trainers (Hoka and Nike) monitor the usage, my days of none running are active recovery through walking. I run in the mornings and maybe for 36hrs I wouldn't be able to run again due to the pain. I realise i'm not getting any younger (52) but keen to understand if there's a light at the end of the tunnel or something I need to manage. Many thanks in advance and sorry to ramble on.
