I will restore this Arcade Joystick for my PlayStation that I restored and upgraded recently. The controller is quite yellow ans the joystick sometimes gets stuck. The controller was made by Asciiware in the 90's. And it has extra switches to simulate automatically pressing buttons.
After disassembling the controller I cleaned the circuit board with isopropyl alcohol and oiled the joystick. To temove teh yellowing I used a retrobrighting method explained more in this video: • How to remove yellowin... Since creating that tutorial I made also this box to have better contol of the temperature and to allow me easily use any size container. More about the box on this video: • Making the Ultimate Re...
Once I had removed the yellowingthere was still some marks left on the shell. I was able to remove those with a magic sponge. I also didn't want to use the hydrogen peroxide on the cord which had some yellowing too. I was able to remove that too with the sponge. The Playstation logo on the contoller was damaged so I repainted it on the shell.
Thanks for watching, I hopy you enjoyed the video!

It's as big as the console.
I thought it was the console.
So was the NES and SNES advantage they were both around the same size as their respective consoles
if not bigger
Amazing job!!! I loved the bit where the Ducktor was checking his reflection in the newly polished knob for the joystick!!! 🕹😂
Ducktor is in all videos, checking if all that is ok 😄
Same, I love how Ducktor is all like hmmm. yes...yes...good. lol
Love the use of the screen sucker to remove the bottom piece, I'd of just tipped that upside-down and no doubt lost several pieces of important things to the abyss that is called "under the desk".
Man this arcade stick was such a good little accessory for playing fighting games on the PS1. Gone are the days of grabbing the controller like a crab. Glad this is seeing a restoration!
honestly the complex combos of old make more sense for such a controller
With the magic of mayflash usb adapters, I still use this on my Xbox One X to play Tekken 7. The turbo feature plus Katarina's kicking spam made is easy to unlock most of the treasure battle goodies overnight lol 😅
Namco made a great one themselves
I expected more inside the joystick considering it’s size. Great job as usual.
So much wasted plastic 🤣 i miss the 90s
@@Straight_White_Fatherly_Figure I think they made the base wider for stability. That way when you tilt the stick you dont end up tilting the whole controller as well.
It's all about perceived value. I'm a toy designer and you'd be surprised how little is inside some of the most expensive electronic toys. Back in the 90's when freight and plastic were cheap, manufacturers loved making oversized cases in oversized boxes. Just look at the original gumdrop iMacs, they have a little motherboard inside and the rest of the product was a huge empty piece of translucent plastic. Nowadays, oil prices, and therefore plastic and shipping prices have gone up so companies are minimizing size and components. Touch screens are replacing buttons etc. Even LEGO has shaved-off a millimeter from the inside wall thickness of its bricks to reduce the plastic they have to buy.
Yeah they were something different back then. I have one of these and an old sega genesis stick and they're literally just stick and buttons stuck to a board They've come a long way to current fully moddable sticks we have today So be grateful everyone who loves arcade sticks as much as I do We have it good
@@lo-firobotboy7112 And that's why stuff don't last as long. And as a result of cutting corners on costs, these electronic products end up going in the e-waste after something breaks in which generates more pollution as a consequence.
Sir! Thank You for all that restoration videos. It`s a very calming experience for me, and all the community here (I hope so!)! I feel glad that I can watch a professional way to restore an oldschool electronics, as a 90`s kid myself. All the best wishes for you Sir! Best wishes from Poland!
Yep, these videos are so chill and informative. I've fixed my old broken N64 thanks to Odd Tinkering. True gent!
This channel is very high quality and I very much appreciate the effort he puts into restoring these electronics.
polska gurom
Yep 😄👍👍👍👍
i like this guys content since he isn’t like those people who say “playstation gameboy console restoration” and they just cover it with rubbish to make it look dirty as hell and sometimes cover up buttons like someone fixing a “gameboy dsi console” covering the cameras and the lights
Such an interesting piece of tech. I've never heard of this until you made a video on it.
I know it is weird
Caddicarus made an entire video about these kinds of accessories. Here is a link to his video: kzhead.info/sun/iMWDist7ooeNdX0/bejne.html
I'm glad that Odd's methods are legit. Other KZheadrs would often take shortcuts and even not disclose if they replaced it with an aftermarket one. There is no shame in using aftermarket parts if the original one is damaged beyond repair. I am curious, is your name Odd? I have met some Finns here in the PH that has the name "Odd". Probably a common name there.
he is from finnland
As a Finn I can safely say I have never heard of anyone being named that in Finland. It would be very 'odd' if that were the case.
Only time I've seen "Odd" be used as a name was the character from Code Lyoko, lol. And I think that's because he genuinely was odd and the nickname just stuck 😅
@@RituPepper quite common in Norway but I have never met a Finn neither that's named Odd.
I guess the guy named Odd is probably Norwegian. I never asked his country of origin properly. I guess I assumed he was Finn because he's working on a Finnish company.
18:11 He really just put the entire FGC on notice with his skill and technique. He's def making top 8.
5:45 you should remove that C-clamp to completely disassemble the stick and dip silicone paste between moving parts instead of oil. Works better that way since it's just plastic.
Sorry Odd Tinkering, but the dude is right--that joystick assembly should have been disassembled completely and given your usual five-star treatment.
Wow. This is the first time I see such a fight stick for PS1. Although in my whole life a lot of different devices have passed me by, both through my hands and seen in stores.
this genuinely looks like it'd be a great tool to have for those with physical limitations. Wonderful restoration as always
would really depend on what the limitations were. fight sticks require a typical full control of the hand in order to move the joy stick around and to optimally press any buttons in tandem together.
@@Wartooth91 Oh, I'm aware, I was generalizing since there's too many different kind of limitations out there. I'm just stating that this could be a good option for at least someone :) I should've been more specific in my wordings.
The Tekken 3 gameplay definitely brought back memories of my button mashing days. Especially when it came to Tekken games, was always satisfying randomly pulling off that character's 1 hit KO move.🤣
I always love the personality you put into these videos. Really makes your channel feel one of a kind
Wow! That was some incredible knob polishing.
2:00 it always amazes me how much extra space is inside some of these old devices…granted this is designed to be like an arcade style control board on your lap or on a surface. But I mean you could practically rent that space out.
You know, I was wondering if maybe this stick could be upgraded with an 8-way gate, but that maybe it wouldn't matter if the PS1 couldn't read the extra inputs (though now that I'm thinking of it, it probably could unless it was maybe a REALLY early launch model, from long before the analog controller was made). I'm sure it matters whether the stick is programmed to emulate the D-pad or the analog stick, when it comes to the number of options. Then again, seeing the simpler design for the actual stick switches, I don't think that's even an option unless you're REALLY familiar with arcade hardware and making/installing adapters for new to old hardware. I get the feeling our boy here could probably figure it out if he wanted.
It looks possible. It's been awhile since I at the arcade as a tech but that stick format looks about the same. This is an analog 4-way with a common. You'd just have to wire it up where the corner switches are connected to the adjoining directions.
you can def reuse the housing and just replace all the internals to use on playstation,xbox/pc. A universal board is like $90, plus the 20 point connector for the buttons, new sanwa stick, and then some buttons and some finesse then voila, you have an old school controller that can be used on modern games.
Since it is PS1 it will almost certainly emulate the D-pad and for most fight sticks the D-pad is also the default, though newer fight sticks (like my 3) sometimes have a switch where you can select the stick to either function as D-pad or as one of the analog sticks. As for an 8-way gate, you'd just have to find the right measurements and then design one and 3d print it, at least for the one he restored here. Had the stick in it been, for example, a Sanwa JLF stick, you'd be able to buy an 8-way gate or even just go in and turn a part on it 45° to get such a gate.
Considering the joystick is using buttons, which are on or off which is the same as digital, I'd say it's just replacing the dpad.
Yes! Perfect time to upload 👍🏻
As both a Tekken player and someone who is very passionate about working on arcade sticks. I really enjoyed and appreciated this video
I love this old arcade stick/controllers restoration videos! You made a nice one! But one thing, the directional stick requires to be fully opened and lubricated with vaseline, because the WD40 will dry and gets more dirt in short period, and the stick will scrape inside
Legend says that after playing those couple rounds at the end, Odd Tinkering had to disassemble the controller once again to fix those buttons( from all that smashing🤣). Great Work, keep it up, it is so calming to watch! 👍
After watching your videos for awhile now I’ve been getting more confident to fix my own old consoles. Like I just fixed my ps2 slim all because your videos are so clearly detailed.
Great Fighting Technique 🤣
This was awesome! I love seeing old tech getting a tune up! Arcade sticks are a really cool accessory!
I love how you used color for models to draw the playstation logo. Big respect. Love your videos
Bro I love your videos so much, it's always something soothing to watch and/or listen to. ❤
Awesome restoration. Brings me back to my childhood with PlayStation.
I remember watching this controller in the back of a PS1 box when I was a kiddo. I didn't know there were dedicated controllers for this PlayStation. I frequently come here to watch this video because is really amazing and satisfying, and I started to play Tekken. More PS controllers restoration, please!
*insert ball polishing joke here* No but seriously your work is always fantastic and inspiring, I have some controllers that could definitely use your kind of TLC, and you've consistently shown how it usually isn't as hard as it seems. :D cheers!

That is probably the most interesting controller I've seen. Interesting video as always!

I love how clean and organized are your reparations!
Asciiware made some neat controllers in the 90s. Great restoration!
Why do I find videos like this so calming to watch? Keep in mind I'm also visually impaired so I really can't even see what's going on that well. I have no idea but keep up the good work.
I really like seeing the small finishing steps that didn't exist in the original manufacturing process. It makes me wonder if the company didn't think to add finishing touches or that manufacturing has just gotten better as a whole.
Lovely restoration and most excellent fighting technique XD
Amazing job, she turned out beautiful! 😍
I love your videos, my GUY! Satisfying to watch. I feel at peace
The color came out so beautiful! 😍 I also like that the electric stuff takes up less than half of the casing 😅
These things are in every junk shop, thrift store, and used toy store. I was never a big gamer so I always pass them by. Nice to see one being cleaned up and put to use.
Where are you at? I can't even remember the last time I found a game controller at a thrift store. Meanwhile all I ever find that is anywhere even close to game paraphernalia are 4:3 monitors, old printers and keyboards, and old 56k modems at my thrifts.
Still have mine!! Nice to see this get a video!
I have one of those joysticks sitting right next to me! I picked up a USB dongle that replicates two PlayStation 2 controller ports, so I can use it with my PC. Awesome to see what's inside.
wow nice to see this classic fight stick. BTW, in the fight stick community, we dont use oil to lube the shaft. We use silicone grease instead. Oil can be messy for some time
literally went "😳" when you finished polishing the joystick. it looks new!! thanks for the video, super relaxing to watch as always
Beautiful restoration Odd good job well done
King of Stuff Repair, keep going man😉👍👍
Thanks for the video, always enjoy watching!
I actually got into to restoring and collecting game consoles because of youre channel and learned techniques like retrobright so thank you for hepling me discover a hidden talent of mine :]
The best thing about your channel is that you always leave links in the description in your videos so people know where to find them👍
i'm impressed at how advanced this tekken game is, despite its age. and how far video games have come.
Continue saving these treasures 🤜🏻🤛🏻
I'm very glad I found this channel, it's like it's catered specifically for me.
Correcting the logo really gave it that extra touch. Great job.
That screwdriver set is awesome! I got mine after I started watching your channel.
This is nuts to me. I customized a Qanba fight stick last year and the stock lever is almost identical to this one. The only major differences are the membrane buttons and size of the pcb. 25 years of change and they're still pretty similar in build.
Never had a PS1. But I remember seeing this once at the shopping. Another great job!
2:02 that's it? they made it a huge block just for that little piece of hardware?
The isopropyl decanter is a nice touch lol Great video as always
This channel is just amazing
Love to see this memorable joystick to new again i have this joystick with complete box use few times only ❤❤❤
非常喜歡你的作品,翻新,修復 有人因為修復,刻意舊化 你不會,你很優秀
Man I loved ASCIIware controllers. I still remember my asciiPad rapids controller for the SNES. The only aftermarket controllers that was quality.
You're incredible keep doing the good work!
What wonderful knob polishing.
we're getting blessed with another new odd tinkering video already?
This videos are straight ASMR!
I had this joystick! It was so cool and all my friends were in awe. Lol. Man… wish I’d kept those systems.
Wonderful!!!!! That really was very good work. Love Herr Ducktor
Wow you have an eye for details, the Logo...im impressed 😉 greetings buddy 🇩🇪
What the heck is that thing! Its like a playstation shaped controller!!!
It's called a fightstick
Great job bro brings back memories
What a rad stick design! I've never seen that before! I'd love to see a company make a modernized version with better parts and placements.
That is super cool looking man
Great restoration as always.
Amazing as it looks now.
Absolutely beautiful job from start to finish. That arcade stick had the best aesthetic of the PS1's offerings, because it matched the design of the console to a tee. Excellent usage of a License for Asciiware. Hell of a good run in Tekken 3 for you, too. I always preferred Eddy Gordo or Yoshimitsu, honestly, but Law is pretty damn baller for a choice.
I'm more of a King kinda fella
Turned out very nice. Loved the tekken 3 game footage 👍😎
I use that technique. It was the only way lol. Push all buttons and then pretend you knew what you were doing 💪🏽🤣🤙🏼. Awesome video sir! You inspired me to repair and restore my consoles. I got my small little kit at home thanks to you.
Come on now, you're revealing all my go-to moves! Haha excellent restoration as always! ✌️
I used this on FFVII as a kid. We’d rig it with a rubber band at the arcade and it would auto play all night. We’d wake up to tons of Gil! Great memories. Thanks for the video!
Always a pleasure.
I was like, "Wow my dude really be labbing the combos!" *zooms in to intense mash* Love the content, and inspiring people like me to finally open up some some consoles with some confidence~
Hahahah. The sound of pressing all buttons randomly and as fast as possible brings back memories. Thanks!
We love you, Ducktor! 💖
Un altro ottimo lavoro del maestro, complimenti 👍👍👍👍👍🏆

We love you mr.tinker
Very nice one! I haven't seen one of these ones before either, so it's cool to see what it's like on the inside.
I got one of these, really nice controller, especially stuck on an Xinput adapter for some Street Fighter V. Had a broken trace on one of the buttons when I got it but it wasn't hard to fix.
The cleaning 10/10 👍 The gameplay 20/10 👌
Incredible work
It looks great and you did a wonderful job restoring it as well!!!! I had one of those back when they first came out hahaha My wife (girlfriend at the time) use to kick my butt at that game. As I was trying to do the moves she was just pushing random buttons Enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Your macro shots are incredible
Not sure if anyone mentioned but the ad break was tasteful and didn't interrupt the flow of the video! Get that cheddar homie
Great video Thanks for sharing
always terrific!
Woah, it’s amazing to see what’s in one of these compared to the actual consoles. Those buttons in the joystick were held by magnets!
