How to paint a door like a pro

I always take the door knob off. Because no matter how good one can paint around it, when the knob is removed it gives a more pro finish.
RebllionDog larry Yeah I've always been told that you take door furniture of in prep. Also unscrew ceiling roses, sockets and light switches to avoid ruining them.
Use painter's tape if you're not a skilled painter. Don't take off the knob. Also, always paint in the direction of the grain. Whether it's a door,or a piece of trim.
+1bundy11 thanks
I totally agree with you Larry. Plus, while the passage sets are removed you can clean any paint off them from previous inept painters and point that detail out to the home owner. I've gotten repeat business and referrals because of pointing out all the old paint I've cleaned off of door hardware, switch plates, etc.
The mark of true professional! Alway remove the handle. The handle stays clean, proper film build around the hand hold area, no brush marks, and saves open time of paint.
So i painted over 60 apartment metal doors in the mississippi heat about a week ago.. And they only had brushes.. I kept tellin them i wanted a small roller..lol but.. Hey.. I got paid by the hour..lolol
Thanks! Great video. Roller makes sense. I have painted 4 doors in my home already and am switching to the roller.
Ok.. Video was cool "BUT", i was waiting 2 c how u used the roller 2 finish it out..?🤷 B'cuz it's sometimes easier said then done. 😕
You are right 😳🔨
And which roller to use
@@JEtt4108 I’m in the process of painting my paneled doors I’m using a 4” sponge roller and it works fantastic, I love it!
This. Dude specifically recommended a roller, implied he was going to show us a roller, then never showed us a roller. I mainly watched this video to try to answer my question to myself of "should I paint this whole door with just a brush or not?" There are other questions too, like sanding in the little decorative cuts where old paint may be chipping or wearing away, not to mention techniques and recommendations for masking or otherwise avoiding paint getting where you don't want it to go. This video is... not exactly informative. It seems more like, "how someone who has never had things go wrong while painting thinks painting a door must be easy."
Exactly… never saw the roller used. I was waiting for that also
I did mine, cane out great..thanks!!
omy gracious this is how youj do it !!! so much easier then the difficulty way i was doing it .lucky for me i caught this video when i have a few more doors left .thank you !
Thanks for the tip about brushing the inner squares of the door and using a roller for the rest of the door. I appreciate it!!
You make it look so easy. I have to try it.
Thought I knew how to paint then I worked with an old San Francisco journeyman painter. Guy painted some speaker cabinets gloss white and they looked like they’d been sprayed. Not a brush mark in them. Mirror finish. Learned a lot from him.
Wow- just wow! I wish I could paint with this precision!
I really like your comment
He’s been doing it for years..!
Wow you are good with that brush, I always have to take off the hardware or I end up with more mess to clean, awesome. Thanks for sharing, I like the corner tips in the panel sections, never gave it much thought before. Blessings.
Thank you for sharing, getting ready to paint my door and its the same door. I use a 4” small purdy roller and trim paint. The same I use for the baseboard. You didn’t show the info on the roller, brush or paint. I used a smaller Wooster trim brush. Works good....
Just what I was looking for. First try. Thanks.
Good video. Any recommendation for what kind of paint is best for indoor wooden doors, the door already has white paint and the paint is chipping off at some areas. Thanks!
Thank you sir. Quick question..what if the door was previously badly painted and needs sanding...should I take it off first or can I sand it while on its hinges?
What kind of paint do you recommend to use when painting interior doors like the one in the video, and for moldings and baseboards?
Remove the hardware and prep (dust, wipe, sand/de-gloss as needed) before painting. Open the door about, oh, halfway and paint the striking edge of the door. Then wedge a roll of masking tape, an old shoe, etc., between the other face of the door and the jamb. Now paint the panels, then the stiles and rails. Done. Like a pro. ;-) Also, the best paint for doors and trim is Sherwin-Williams Pro Classic latex enamel. Bam! lol
Is it a good idea to just remove door and lay it flat during painting also if possible?
Kaiwon Smith appreciate the kind of paint comment even though I already got the behr because it was cheaper and I think it went on nice and looks good!
Should you thin the paint
Have you ever tried Stak Rack? I bet you would do an AMAZING video combined with that product and these tips!
I also apply paint with a brush around the recessed squares. I then apply paint to the flat areas with a brush and then immediately roll it with a sponge roller before the paint dries...brush in one hand, roller in the other. If you wait too long and the paint starts to dry you could peel the paint with the roller. Gives a better smoother professional finish.
Just curious you speak of the important of using the roller but never show it or use it in your video. Odd and not accurate in your video.
@@davidshettlesworth1442 I don’t think the person you commented to is the poster of this video.
I use Sherwin Williams Super Paint Semi Gloss for trims and doors :)
How does this hold up against your regular pure white semi gloss?
Sherwin Williams b53 semi gloss works perfec
Hallman Lindsey is much better for woodwork
Very helpful! Thanks
Great video. Thanks
hey i liked this video, can you name the type of white paint you are using? i bought white paint too but it looks different on the door.
that's pro. i want to know What kind of brush you use??
Would have like to see how you rolled it out. What size and type of roller cover do you use?
What kind of paint do you use ? And how much paint would you think I would need for about 8-10 doors
how long would it take to sand prep if need be tape around handle abd and paint a colonial door cheers 😀👍🇦🇺
What sheen would be the best for those type of Indoor doors? Semi gloss?
Thank you its very helpful
Excellent
really nice work I just reason painted my interior 6 panel doors and frame after 2 days of drying time I installed the doors but now when I close the doors it stick it doesn't peel the paint of but it feels sticky what can I do to fix it
Thank you so much! Will let you know how I get on! 😄
do you use oil paint or latex paint to paint the door and baseboards?
Thanks for the tip.
Hello what brushes do you use wooster purdy 3 "greetings from barcelona painter Esparreguera
Do you need to prime the door first? Thank you
Thank you very much for the video I didn't know where to start with my doors .i do now . All in time for Christmas I hope. Thanks very much. And happy Christmas. P.S. don't tell the wife I was on you tube..Niall.
You are the master!
We bought a new build... We went to check out how progress was going and the doors were on! But they looked yellow... Like the ones in your video. They haven't painted the walls or anything yet so I'm hoping they get painted.
So I only learned half of the trick... when are you going to make a video of actually rolling the paint like you mentioned?
Thank you
Nice brushwork
Hi I have a cuestión .. Do you use flat white paint or white semigloss? Let me know please
Thank you ☺️
best video I've seen. clearer explanation. thank you!
What paint should I buy to paint a door...im new to this.any suggestions
Thanks I'll paint our door this way except I'll use a smaller brush for now to paint around the door and hinges cause I'm not as good as you.
I just replaced 8 brown pine 1970’s doors with these new white paneled doors and new hardware. Wow what a difference already, but they are “primer white” and now I have to paint them. Since it’s all new hardware I’m going to take it off, and actually take the doors down and do it on saw horses in the garage because I have cats and a dog that I don’t want brushing into a wet door. It’s going to be more work but the door manufacturer says to paint all sides to “seal” it so moisture doesn’t get in and warp the door over time, and the only real way to paint the bottom is to take it off the hinges.
So, you can paint over the existing glossy paint? You don't have to strip it first?
If the door has a high sheen to it and I wanted to do an egg shell sheen would I have to do a light sand first?
Would you suggest a paint sprayer?
Pros start with the sides of the door first. Door fronts are always last. Same goes when painting your cabinets. Removing hardware makes a big difference too and it's very easy. :)
That door took way 2 long did o prep work like a light sand n dust. Should have joined a union
@@craigpease2184 He didn't need to do prep work you clown, he was just showing you how to paint a door, as in doing the inner squares first
If u show somebody something then teach the right way s..l..UT. 💯. Clown that
what is the best paint type and style for doors?
What kind of paint are you using? thx
good paint, good brush, prepped door and good technique = great paint job , well done
Brush dip close up would've been nice. ;) I'm comparing that to trim, my most hated task.
Do i need to prime the door before painting?
I'd add what type of paint, brush size and roller texture. I guess for brush, whatever you're comfortable with. In the video looks to be maybe 3"?
what sheen of paint is this? semi gloss? what’s best to use on doors
What type of paint brush are you using ?
What paint brush do you use? Brand?
So every time I paint a door in my house it ends up making a sticking noise against the frame when I open it. My wife says you’re supposed to take the door off and let it dry fully bye a friend of mine who is a contractor says that’s not true. What are your thoughts on that and do you have any ways to make the sticking noise go away?
is it ok to use a spray paint on a bi fold door
Thank you very much.
You're welcome :)
Do you use oil base or water base? Thanks
What about the edges the door? should i paint first?
What type of paint did you use
Thanks for the tip of removing a door lock when it's a new door
Hey there which paint did u used?
Quick question What paint should I use?
What kind of 🎨 paint do you use?
Does it matter if you give the door a quick sanding before painting?
Was the paint gloss, satin or matt finish?
I have a door that is already painted high gloss. I repaired the a small hole and need to paint small area. The problem is I’m not able to touch up the original paint because of the high gloss. I’m using the same exact paint but once I land a brush on the door, it leave brush streak marks. How can I avoid that without painting the entire door?? Thank you .
What’s the best paint for a door?
Great video! So you would not recommend taking the door down or door knobs hardware off seems tough to paint without getting paint on the brass hardware just asking I am still a newbie thank you.
Perfect thank you very much
Sir what type of paint do I use? Can you please provide the name. Thank you
You didn't show the rolling part. :(
Suzy Wernet yes I was thinking n waited for that part.
The rolling part is the easiest part. If you need help at that stage just pay a painter to do the work for you.
complexbboy lol
See you in the Sequel .....The Roller
Exactly!!!
Should I paint the door first or my rooms wall first?
good lesson on painting door
Yes certain systems do not allow you to flip the door yourself. Ours however does, and allows you to paint trim at the same time. Have a look at some of our videos.
Dang I wish I had the skills!
Always recommend that you take the door knob off get a better result when rolling that area
???? I kept fast-forwarding to the rolling part but missed it. Do you show somewhere how to roll the paint?
I wanted to see what kind of roller you used...small, regular, fuzzy or foam???
I use his technique with a small foam roller
Wait! Did I miss something? When did you use the roller?
what paint did you use?
What paint is best?
Can this be done with water based Paint
What type and brand of brush did you use for the door painting video? Paint brand if you can?
Nour Nature's Palette 2.5 inch sash :)
Nice oner
You mention doing two coats since the door was not white previously. Why is that necessary?
Hmm. I wanted to see what kind of roller and how you did that too.
I always use SW Interior/Exterior trim paint which is MUCH thicker than what you’re using. Not way will it move like the paint you used. Also, what brush did you use? Lowe’s and Home Depot no longer sell Wooster so I’ve had to resort to using Purdy.
Lowes sells Purdy, and Home Depot sells Wooster
you are a really good painter! I wish I could hire you but my husband wants to do the job himself. I'll be painting a door tomorrow. Needed tips. How would I paint a cherry wood cabinet that has a shine to it? like a latex, laminate. I don't know how to call it.
+Celine Oriet I'm not really sure what you mean by that? If you want to email me a picture of it and more information as to what you're trying to do in terms of paint, I'll try my best to help :) remi@expressionspainting.com
+Expressions Painting Ce que je veux dire est mélanine ou bois contre plaqué. Merci!
+Celine Oriet I would still need more information to know what you're trying to do with the doors. I'll need a picture and more info sent to my email
Should the door be sanded first?
That was helpful but- What happened to demonstrating the roller portion of the job? 🤔
Not the way to do it firstly you get a better finish with a decent brush. If you cut in all the panels and around the door knob first if for example you are going to finish with gloss or oil based eggshell you will get edges what may show through .You are always better to brush the door and not roll you may get a orange peel affect.Panels fist then across then down the door sides last.
If you're not a professional,Best to take it off the hinges first?
Need more information like best brushes and how much to load up on the brush... more technique talk. Thanks for the video.
