    • That, my friend, is what it takes to level the playing field between a 2150-rated player and a 800-rated player. Unless you've been to a major USATT tournament and played in it, you'd have no idea about the difference a mere 200 ratings points makes.. you'd have very little chance of beating someone rated 200 points above you, and you'd have to try pretty hard to lose to someone rated 200 points below you (excepting up-and-coming Juniors who are rising fast, and they get adjusted up in any case before the calculations are made..). Adam's way above the typical 1400-1700 rated club player, but he'd get hammered by someone rated 2400. That's the nice thing about tournaments in the US, though - there's always a class you will be competitive in, doesn't matter whether you're rated 2500, or someone who's never played in a club, who's rated 800. And if you can improve over time, your rating will go up when you beat players rated above you.

      @iskandartaib@iskandartaib6 ай бұрын
    • @@iskandartaibdoes rating decrease?

      @0XDOXS@0XDOXSАй бұрын
    • @@0XDOXS Yes. If you lose to someone rated below you in a tournament, you will lose ratings points, and your opponent will gain points (this is how you increase your rating, by defeating someone rated above you). How many points you lose depends on the points differential. They make allowances in the case of rapidly improving players (usually juniors) - if a person beats a whole bunch of people rated far above his/her current rating, they'll adjust his rating upwards before calculating the point losses and gains.

  • I'm a youthful 75 years old, and watching Adam and Marques has taken me on a trip down memory lane. It feels like I've been using the spins Adam executed for well over 50 years in my own service and return actions. Adam is undeniably a master at these spins, but I must say I'm not too shabby myself at 75!

    • @@benroth9409 He is.. And to be honest, he's got nothing to be cocky about - there are tons of players far better than he is. Go watch some of the videos where he plays some of them. It's hard to be cocky in a game where an 11 year old girl can give you four points and win, and Adam's willing to play against them despite knowing he's going to lose. He'll often play against much better players using the same handicap system he's offered his opponent here, though I've never seen such a big handicap as this.

  • This was so much fun to watch two of my favorite (very different) creators come together to play! I had an eerily similar table tennis journey to Marques (straight line, fast, won most games… then played people who knew spin). I had to start waaayy back at the beginning, got a professional racket as a gift from one of my mentors, and now… am better. But it took about 9 months of feeling like a fool to get to a place where I could challenge the more elite players with some consistency. So keep on keeping on Marques! Play people better than you as often as you can!
