  • I grew up with them. I had a very close connection with one of them in particular, and when she died it just seems like a part of me died with her. I miss that damn dog. I hope to see her again in the afterlife.

  • we breed them and you have not mentioned one of the best aspects of this breed see most dogs when you come home wil be enthousiastic and wil show that by jumping and licking and seeking contact, so too do cockers, but where as most breeds wil keep jumping and licking as you give them attention cockers wil generally stop doing so and instead hug, they wil get close and put their head on your shoulder or neck and wil just try to stay as close as they can for as long as they can, giving a lick here and there but really enjoying this long warm contact over jumping around heavily

  • I live in Southern California, and have had American Cocker Spaniels all of my adult life. My first one was a rescue from a shelter. He had been abused and was out on his own for quite a while. Max was my sweetheart who didn't like my ex...should have listened to that dog! Then when my Dad suddenly passed, I took his 4 month old Cocker puppy named Ricky...he and Max became good buddies who both loved my pool. Both of them were black. As nature does, Max went to Heaven when he was 15 and Ricky was 8. Ricky became a little bored and I knew he needed a buddy. Enter Lucy, my beautiful red girl. That's right, Ricky and Lucy. That damned nature struck again when Ricky was 13. Lucy enjoyed being all mine, especially since I was working from home a lot. We spent the best year on the first year of my retirement. Unfortunately, Lucy passed at 11 from liver/gallbladder failure last Christmas. I'm now on a waiting list for an American Cocker Spaniel from a breeder nearby. I cannot wait. Everything you said in your videos is true. They love kids, but you can't let kids rough house with them.. They are sensitive so you cannot yell at them to correct...and the food...yep they can hear paper crackling a mile away. Lucy had such a good nose I would worry I she were very interested in something in the yard. Lucy loved to be groomed, and I had her professionally groomed every month. She loved her groomer who was mobile...all I had to do is say, "Heather's coming", and she'd run to the door, when she couldn't smell her, she jumped on the couch to look out the window. When Heather's trailer pulled up to the front of the house, OMG, let the excitement begin. They are such awesome dogs.

I just rescued a Cocker about 5 months ago, who had nightmares (no more) and was wondering if you knew of a place who adopts them out? He is doing great now, Vet says about 8-9 years old, very nice, likes to play and is good with cats and other dogs and even chickens : ). Thx jeff

  • I wish this video was available when I chose to get my american cocker spaniel earlier this year. It took me many hours of research to find out even half of what you mentioned in this short video. Make sure you are committed to the grooming before you decide to get one because it is no joke. Keep in mind that the energy requirements are more for adults, all puppies seem to be full of boundless energy. My cocker is still a puppy so his energy requirements are through the roof but I am starting to see the more moderate exercise requirements mentioned in the video now that he is approaching his first birthday. I did not realize just how human dependent the breed is when we first got ours so we have decided we need to get another canine buddy for him since I am away all day for work. We are getting an English Mastiff puppy early in the new year which is great timing since our cocker still has a good amount of energy. So, they can play and expend energy together while they are both young but will both have low/moderate energy later in life. This way they will be on the same page energy wise. Plus our family is a lower energy family so both breeds are a good fit for us too. You have to take all of this into consideration before your choose your dog. Otherwise you end up with a dog that just doesn't fit which can be disastrous. I have seen it first hand.

  • Another worthy point is you have to take care of their ears. Being floppy eared, and no air getting inside, they are prone to ear problems if their ears aren’t taken care of properly. A very clingy breed, mine follows me EVERYWHERE - especially to the kitchen 😄. Mine found out quickly showering with mum was not as much fun as it looked! Always want to play. Adores being groomed. Mine does 0-60 from wherever he is if the hairdryer is turned on. It’s his favourite thing in the world. If you want a breed that constantly wants love and attention go for it.

    • My Blacky lived on 17.5 too. Most of his life we went for long walks, and he was lucky because we had several beautiful, semi-wild oases nearby, he could stalk pheasants in the cornfield, run with other familiar dogs in the meadows, run in the streams, swim in the lakes and sniff the forests to his heart's content. I went through puberty, adolescence, youth and a good part of my adult years with him. I was very careful about his diet. He was regularly groomed by an excellent hairdresser whom he adored. Unfortunately, he had to visit the vet often because of constant ear infections and because of the grass spikes that had to be removed from his body. However, he used to bite if something was not to his liking and he did not regret it, he would bite again if we tried to correct him. All in all, my heart broke when I held him to my chest for the last time. I wouldn't take a cocker anymore because of his fur, but otherwise it is an excellent sports and hunting dog.

Recently I’ve started researching cocker spaniels. This could be the perfect fit for our family as long as my husband’s allergies don’t act up. We used to have a lovely, sweet German shepherd and he was fine with that breed. Does anyone else with allergies have different reactions to different dog breeds? It’s curious.

Also from what i can tell there are clear personality differences between working cockers and show cockers (working cockers can be a handful for inexperienced owners if not given clear boundaries and a job to do) Cavaliers & Cavalier KC may be a better fit for family pets ? Our dog has a resource guarding aggression and due to covid, we can’t bring trainers in the house and we’re left with her aggressive behavior, we try our best to minimize the behavior but it happens so randomly.

But they explained this to all their guests and worked hard to socialise their doggo and he's so lovely. So don't let it put you off, if you happen to get one like this just be persistent with socialising the doggo.

  • Don't breed or buy from breeders while millions of healthy adoptable dogs and puppies are euthanized in animal control facilities every year. Opt to adopt from your local humane society or rescue. Every breed has a breed rescue in every state and the rescues are full.
