Kyiv hit by Russian cruise missiles in series of ‘massive strikes’

Kyiv was hit by a wave of Russian missiles in the first big strike on the capital in weeks, said the head of Ukraine’s military administration.
Serhiy Popko said cruise and ballistic missiles rained down on the city from different directions, with air alerts lasting for nearly three hours.
Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said at least 10 people were injured across the city. An 11-year-old girl was among the two people taken to hospital.
Mr Klitschko first reported explosions in the capital at just after 3am.

  • The Russian Aerospace Forces have delivered a strike by long-range precision weaponry including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at Ukrainian decision-making centres, logistic bases, temporary deployment areas of special operations forces and foreign mercenaries “The goal of the strike has been achieved. All the assigned targets have been engaged,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement. This was the first massive strikes on the capital of Ukraine in 44 days. The first wave of strikes began 05:00 local time. It included the usage of X-101 missiles and Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles. Presumably, military facilities were hit in the Podolsk district (deployment area of personnel and two industrial enterprises), Shevchenkovsky district (near the Chaika airfield) and Svyatoshinsky district (deployment area of personnel). According to reports, the largest pharmaceutical enterprise in Ukraine, the Farmak plant, was among the targets. The equipment maintenance shop was reportedly damaged. Farmak has multiple contracts for the supply of products to Ukrainian armed forces. These contracts include the provision of medical supplies to the paramilitary and security forces as well as supply, diagnostics and repair of military medical equipment. Therefore, the facility is in fact a part of the Ukrainian military-defense complex and a legal target for strikes. A weapons warehouse with Western-supplied weapons in the Boyarsky district was reportedly hit by several strikes. Meanwhile, Russian forces continued offensive actions in the Avdeevka area and liberated the village of Tonenkoye.

  • As losses on the battlefield triple, Kiev has been trying to create an impression the frontline is firm and pressing for another $60 billion support package, military analyst Igor Korotchenko has said. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Wednesday that the Ukrainian army’s losses this year had totaled 71,000 men and 11,000 pieces of military hardware, which is three times the amount lost in the same period last year. "Number one reason for such losses, of course, is this: when at the beginning of the year it was being decided whether another $60-billion US tranche should be transferred to Ukraine, it was extremely important for Zelensky to demonstrate the stability of his defenses," says Korotchenko, the editor-in-chief of National Defense magazine. He added that this also explains why the fighting around Avdeyevka continued for so long. Korotchenko noted that Kiev "madly and recklessly sends more and more forces for 'meat assaults.' It is due to such frontal attacks that the enemy has heavy losses." Korotchenko also pointed to the personal characteristic features of the new Ukrainian army’s commander-in-chief, Alexander Syrsky, who replaced Valery Zaluzhny. Syrsky, unlike Zaluzhny, is more obedient, says Korotchenko, while Zaluzhny was independent and tried to pursue his own policy. Syrsky, Korotchenko believes, does not care about losses, his aim being "to fulfill Kiev's political directives." "Although, in principle, Ukraine's top brass was replaced just recently, nevertheless, Syrsky has already demonstrated he tends to opt for insane assaults," Korotchenko said.
