I Bought a Budget Overland Rig and Crawled it up a Control Road | Rav4 build part one

Sometimes less is more. Especially when it comes to car camping. my tundra has treated me great but the last few solos trips have shown that its a bit overkill from time to time. i decided it was necessary to get myself into a little budget overland rig, get it out, see what budget mods i need to do next and get some overnight camping in.

    • This is why i can understand people like 395jnky that doesn't put out his coordinates for the spots he finds. It's like a fisherman holding on to their fishing holes. Gotta respect it. People burning spots sucks! I have a hike i like to do that is popular before but now has gotten over populated to the point people trash the parking lot at the trail head and park in mass blocking the gate rangers need to be able access in case of an emergency. I was almost blocked in my parking spot by someone double parking because the lot is so full you have to park alongside the road leading up to the trail. I hate people. When something gets popular, they can ruin the experience.

But, once I was going shooting with a cousin and drove my MB CLK. Slow and picked my lines. Wouldn’t do it again but didn’t hurt anything. Just do it with what you got. Upgrade when you know what you really need. IMHO thanks for the vid!

  • I grew up, camping, fishing, hiking, boat camping, island camping in the Pacific Northwest. We did all these things out of a little rear wheel drive import car, a borrowed tent and borrowed sleeping bags, a Coleman lantern, and a Coleman stove. We did it that way until the early 80s when we bought a very used pop top camper van that needed a ton of body work. In my day we just called it camping or car camping now it’s Overlanding and requires a $60,000 vehicle plus all the accessories and equipment to go on it. All you really need is food, water shelter, and some form of transportation. Oh, and don’t forget the private chef and the required footage of him preparing food.

Going to do some minor work on the suspension and maybe different wheels and tires and make a new sleeping platform with storage out of aluminum. other than that it’s good to go for pretty much everything we do. An awning would be pretty dope so we had more dry space when it rains found that out in New Mexico last week!

Like you i trie to let people know that just getting out is the goal and it dosent matter that you get out there in. I recently got back to Tx from Colorado where i did 110 miles off road on my 2000 honda rancher 2wd. Nearly every other vehicle in the back country was a 25k sxs or 75k overland rig. I know i had just as much fun as every other person on the trails. My tent and my honda and days of great fun. He also told some people they would probably need a Jeep or something with 4WD and a good amount of clearance. He was driving on The Georgia Traverse. If you've never heard of it, it has less obstacles than in this video. I drove on roads like this in a Ford Escort when I was younger. It really teaches you how to find the right lines for more technical trails later.

I think finding clever solutions to maximize your experience is far more enjoyable than spending 100,000 dollars on a camping set up. The idea that you need a overbuilt rig with a $6000 RTT and a stupid Skottle to go camping is preposterous. Keep up the vids and get out here an enjoy your Rav4. Can't go wrong with a Toyota.

  • How Refreshing & from Tucson! Why use common sense when you can dive into $ 100K of debt? My second 'car camper' was a '65 Chevy Bel Air I bought for $75, got it road worthy and drove 10,000 in 3 weeks. It was America's 200 th Birthday, 1976. Raised 2 boys, got back on the road and became king of the (FR) fire road in my '93 Dodge Stealth or '97 2WD Mitsi Montero Sport about 2002 the 1st time Mt. Lemon burnt. It's about the discovery, adventure & fun - like you it just gets harder to back road and not hear the sound of the glamper.....their generators. My '06 Highlander AWD hybrid is my RV, home away from home. 270 degree awning? How about 3 tarps, 3 Poles, bungees & caribineers? CU out there unless I see you first! 👍☮

If you do actual trips on something like the Dalton Road in Alaska Chinese tires don’t make it. Your life is worth the extra money it takes to buy actual decent name brand tires. Especially if this is a solo trip

Sure I could buy the brand new but, I know that just like the fancy rigs, I would not put a 50k investment in the sand and mud as I do with my lovely 2ºgen, and of course, not gonna lie, its always fun to rescue the fancy rig mid-trail with them not beliving it until I get them out hahah

  • On the philosophical points, you nailed it -- we need more people pointing out that most of the overlanding craze is the poser-takeover and gentrification of vehicle supported camping. But there's one thing you might want to know; The road you were on is an improved road -- it's maintained by a road grader, and the grade is engineered. Exposed rocks don't mean it's not maintained -- that road is a graded, maintained road. Second point; The way you talked about the wildfire indicates that you may not understand that the area you're in is 100% adapted to wildfire, and suppression of fires in these areas has caused fuel loads to increase well beyond what's normal. Since you're spreading generally good gospel, it would be nice to see a clearer understanding of the environment you're in by talking about the importance of wildfire to these areas, rather than talking about wildfire as a bad thing. Every native plant in this area is not just adapted to tolerate wildfire -- they're entirely dependent on it. Suppressing wildfire in areas like this is a deep ecological disruption -- it's the equivalent of starving a human of bathing and grooming, which leads to pestilence and disease. Appreciate the reality check on the novice takeover and gentrification of car camping.

  • One thing that would help and be cheap is buying an OME lift kit and installing a LSD rear. The LSD rear was a factory option that's pretty rare, but you just need the splines and actual internal diff. You can find it from rx300s, sequoias, 1996-2005 rav4s, etc.

    @lasersharksushi1975@lasersharksushi19755 ай бұрын
    • I’ve had my eyes out for that diff, somewhat hard to come by in the states at least. They’re all over Australia. I’ve got the OME kit in the mail!

      @Whitedogoverland@Whitedogoverland5 ай бұрын
    • @@Whitedogoverland another thing worth upgrading is an electric actuator for the center diff lock. If may require a custom mount, but it's not expensive and it's more reliable than the goofy vacuum system. The rav4 doesn't have a low gear because that's exactly what the CDL does. It completely splits power evenly and gets you over some really tough terrain. I've gotten over some stuff that has made a lot of lifted truck owners a bit butt hurt that they can't get over it with my '97. And lastly. Consider a 3SGTE swap. The hardest part is the exhaust and that's it pretty much. You'll jump from 120ish horsepower to 350 very quickly.

      @lasersharksushi1975@lasersharksushi19755 ай бұрын
    • @lasersharksushi1975 I’ve heard of that actuator mod being quite advantageous. I’ll have to check into that a bit more I appreciate the advice. My plan for the motor is to run it til it’s last breath and swap the gte in. I’ve got a buddy with an old celica he’s going to part out down the road, just need to find a custom harness. That added horse power would be huge.

      @Whitedogoverland@Whitedogoverland5 ай бұрын
    • Somehow forgot to respond to this. Don't worry about a new harness during the swap, send in your old one to wiregap and they'll modify it for your new ECU. @@Whitedogoverland
