Transient Narcissism Induced by Substances, Circumstances (Conference Presentation)
Substances such as cocaine and alcohol can render you a full-fledged narcissist for a few hours. Fame, power, money can accomplish the same startling transformation for years (Acquired Situational Narcissism).

Hello, my favorite professor of psychology. As an active member of AA, i am utterly convinced of the complex Phenomenon of Craving. Once alcohol enters the body, an intense craving ensues, eliminating all choice of stopping. The best defense is to CHOOSE not to take that first drink. In that way, you are correct, and tools to avoid that addictive temptation are provided in AA, self-help, therapy, and other sources. Thank you again for your insight.
My ex narc is an alcoholic. She drinks every day and often hides her drinks. Her life is very sad and lonely but 4 months was more than enough.
I run away fast from alcoholics. I'm allergic to them. And to alcohol. Glad you escaped.
AA is filled with them. Very scary place to be.
I love and idealize you, dear professor, but I'm afraid of what the future holds.
Just started listening and you are so polite regarding your move and your place. My daughter has just come back from Israel Back to South Africa Johannesburg she was doing a schooling there. Right let’s listen to my legend Sam !
The sound in your apt is fine. Nice to listen to you again! My Narcussist had NPD all the time, and he used drugs and alcohol.
Appreciate this to no end. My ex is cptsd with npd an hpd by my observations. She suffers with serious substance abuse issues and is now addicted to methamphetamine for at least a year and half with 20 years of alcoholism and other substance abuse (Adderall, cocaine and opiate's). This particular video is helping tremendously to understand my own codependency and continue with my individuation for my own well being. Well done sir, this is a god send at the moment as we have separated two months ago after revealing major infidelity to which i had suspicions of. Lots of nuggets in here. Thank you
Another great video by Prof. Vaknin, explaining how addiction produces transient narcissism. So enlightening and spot on!
In retrospect , I noticed that my ex- husband became more arrogant, spiteful, mean and lacking in empathy during the end of the marriage as his affair with the OW got stronger . When Dr. Vankin describes a life changing experience which can trigger narcissism , I’ve wondered if that ego boost he received was thrilling enough to make his milder narcissism much worse . I was severely gaslighted . In a nutshell, he changed quite a bit.
My ex suspected Narcissist was totally addicted to illicit substances (injecting). I had often wondered if his lying and manipulative behaviour was actually caused by his drug use or would he be the same even if he had never used drugs? You have helped me work the answer out.
This talk was fantastic. I learned so much. Thank you.
I had something happen as a kid and a traumatic brain injury.
BRILLIANT 👏 YOU DESCRIBED MY X TO A T PLUS YOU HELPED ME TO GET OVER THE PINNED UP ANGER, I NOW PITTY AND NEVER WANT TO THINK OF HIM IN A GOOD WAY LIKE HE WAS THE FIRST TWO YEARS OUT OF 20. YOU ARE BRILLIANT 👏 😀 🙌 👌 ❤️ ✨️
Minie´s mug borderline was too much for me HAHAHAHAHAH very good!!
Oh my God. This is sooo spot on. I can't believe this.
Thank you so much Dear Professor. I appreciate the knowledge.
Sound is great...no problem
Professor Sam, this video is an ad for coke, at least to me it seemed like it. I really want to try it now, I'm a schizoid with very low self-esteem, I would like to have some of that grandiosity even at the cost of the side effects.
It really isn't. A substance won't give you new personality, new traits, it can only simplify what is already almost at the surface. Withdrawn people with a lot of fear and shame based defenses usually experience paranoia with stimulants - neuroscience explains why. Don't look for a panacea in substances, or you will waste years of your life and a lot of your brain's sensitivity for positive experiences (cocaine is notoriously neurotoxic especially during binges, it desensitizes dopamine receptors) on it. Therapy's truly a better investment - low self esteem isn't something that can be helped by tweaking brain chemistry alone - millions of people have tried by now, all failing.
This video described my Ex to the T.. Every single part and idk how to recover from it
I am watching you from Israel🇮🇱
Jews are most narcissistic of all
Is Pewdiepie a narcissist? I know a few people that use yay the way other people drink coffee. Mainly because their brain chemistry is very active and scattered. So they can't focus, can't sleep, can't finish a project, etc. Instead of taking pharmaceuticals, they self medicate and it does balance them. One friend of mine has been doing it for years and the amount he uses hasn't increased since he began. If anything, he uses less because it's not a party drug for him. When he doesn't have any, his brain is on fire and he can't sit still. When he has some, he's calm and acts perfectly normal. I never would have guessed he was doing it. He doesn't drink or smoke weed or anything else. He says it like giving ritalin to hyperactive kids. Ritalin is speed, right? So the difference is that his stimulant is plant based and not some chemical potion made in a laboratory. He's not narcissistic at all. He's very kind and generous and gives to charity all the time. And he is compassionate and cries genuine tears. So I think I will disagree with this idea and say that in some cases it doesn't turn people into raging narcissistic monsters. But I've seen it happen with people who use it for the high and not as a medication. Freud was a cokehead.. he had his nose buried in a bag of llello for years. He overdid it, though. I live in South America where it's not a big deal and you can buy leaves at farmers markets. Chewing the leaves has a mellow effect, it's very subtle. Every drug has the potential to be misused. Even seemingly benign drugs like THC. My stoner friends are zombified and have arrested development. Alcohol is the most destructive and despicable drug, imo. I'm allergic to alcohol and to alcoholics.
💯
@@madmaxxx69 Thanks, I wasn't expecting any positive responses. But that won't stop me from giving my two pesos about it.
@@cantfindmykeys a lot of ignorant imbeciles out there. Appreciate you sharing
@@madmaxxx69 Yay to that. People seem to forget that everyone processes various substances according to individual body and brain chemistry. Some people can eat spicy food, others can't. Some people get wasted from a glass of wine. Others can drink an entire bottle of vodka like it's water (Russians can do that). Most people can't moderate their intake of certain things. But there are always exceptions. Anyway, it's been a blast chatting with you. :)
Problem is that dopaminergic drugs with short acting times are notoriously difficult to self dose-control due to the ways we suspect they interface with our brain's reward system. It is possible, certainly but with extended release ADHD (the way you described the way he feels without is how I experience my symptoms) medication, the need to take the risk is almost nonexistent. And, looking outside in, it can be extremely difficult to gauge one person's true depth of addiction and their perception of the substance. Using something that helps intermittently leaves one with no desire to employ more effective long term strategies that require more effort and energy expenditure and that is a form of sabotage in of itself.
Is there a video on NPD and drugs - like extasy, marihuana? I’m interested how it influences them. Thank you
Search the channel.
I think NPD people don't find "likeable" hallucinogene/psychedelic substances. Alcohol and cocaine are ego boosters.
Is it necessary for all husbands to reject their wife at midlife because of an identity crisis ?
I need some clarification . I was diagnosed with PTSD from a therapist that had treated me for three years , at that point . and I’ve I’ve got too much empathy happening that , in recent years , I’ve paid a high price . So, is that covert narcissism? I’ve had to admit to myself that I can’t assist people anymore when they ask huge help and financial help to others . I have trouble letting someone down and declining to help. in a way, I’ve got a target on my back. So is this covert narcissism .?
That's codependency
So is this true of only coke and alcohol or is meth another one that could contribute to the personality disorder?
Coke and alcohol are the only ones that induce extreme grandiosity.
Most of the meth addicts I know are extremely grandiose, and a large portion of them were not like this before they acquired the habbit... Would it be correct to assume they had a pre-existing disorder and that the ongoing meth use triggered it? I've always thought the meth was the underlying issue and hadn't considered there may have always been a disorder lying dormant.
Funny my personality doesn't change much at all, just joke a bit more. Not any? research gets done on solely the integrated percentage of humans. Instead we get evolutionarily bias controls. What is the evolutionary humans behavioural range?
