Ep. 60 | Why Suppressed?

2019 ж. 24 Нау.

Why suppressed? Consider the fact that if you’re listening to this podcast, that’s courtesy of your functioning ears, which we should all be doing everything in our power to maintain. For some the answer to the question of “Why suppressed?” is obvious, but due to some unfortunate misinformation in popular and social media, suppressor ownership and use can be scary, seemingly unnecessary or just plain confusing to a great deal of hunters, shooters and budding enthusiasts. In this episode, Jimmy, Mark, Reuben Aleckson and Adam Maxwell discuss why shooting suppressed should be looked at as a great benefit to shooters, hunters, our neighbors and even the habitat which we hunt in. We discuss generally how most states go about their suppressor transfers, how a suppressor works and all the many benefits of owning and using a suppressor in a wide variety of shooting scenarios. Then when you’re done… Get one… Or two… Or a bunch for all your firearms!

  • In the UK, suppressors (also known as Moderators) are required to be on your firearms licence for firearms, but can be easily requested when requesting a slot for a rifle for your licence. The longest wait is awaiting approval for the slots or application for the firearms licence. The suppressor must me transferred in person and can’t be bought online for delivery. But if it’s in stock and you have the cash, you can walk out without paying extra tax and a need to wait months. New licence request is approx £90, any variation to the licence is roughly £20.

    @DIYSteveH@DIYSteveH3 жыл бұрын
    • No.. 3 dB is a doubling, 10 dB is 10 times more (its rounded, but in all practicality its true). Sound volume decrease exponentialy with distance, like rings on water. So thats why dB logaritmic is logical for sound levels.

      @VortexNation@VortexNation3 жыл бұрын
    • @@VortexNation Hi, no not really, our gun laws are better than most countries considering the law makers wouldn`t know one end of a gun from the other. I`m not sure what you have heard but the new government has tried making improvements to the gun laws in a knee jerk reaction to the mosque shootings which hasn`t achieved anything positive. The national gun owners groups have protested the changes so not much has changed. The main changes are banning of semi autos & magazine capacities of maximum 10 rounds. Pistols are very hard to buy but not impossible (lots of regulations). There is no gun register so you can own as many guns as you want and no laws limiting the amount of ammo you can purchase... -)

People complained about banning centrefire semi autos but how many people really need them, like really need them? I'm a farmer and even with a pest problem semi autos have never been a necessity. A short handy suppressed. 223 bolt gun will kill goats just as good as a semi.

You can buy or make as many guns here as you want and not have to register any of them. And no we don’t have a limit on ammo either. So I dunno agree to disagree. But we have all the same laws as you except for 1. Silencers. But 30 round 40 round. 110 round. Magazines. Full auto stuff. Semi auto center fire. Pistols. • Yeah, I like suppressors and hope to get one soon, but electronic ears are better for hunting and for hearing protection. They actually amplify normal sounds and provide greater noise reduction. I want a suppressor for my neighbors as I have my own range. I use subsonic 22 quiets when introducing new shooters. And, if you really don’t want to not disturb other animals in the woods, use a bow. It’s even better for your ears.

    • Im from sweden and here supressors are legal for 222/223 rifles and over (its more complicated then that, but for simplicity). But we separate weapon license for hunting vs weapon license for competition. You can own a AR15 for competition in sweden, with a supressor, but you are not allowed to hunt with it. Anyway. I use supressor when i hunt. generaly i dont use protection when doing so - at most i shoot 1-2 shots and when in the open its not that bad. It lowers recoil alot and it disturbs both animals and people less. I find the tradeoff worth it. Also i shoot better with supressor, as the recoil and rifle balance is better. I have a 20" Howa mini in 6.5 grendel and 308 Winchester 70 22"

    • By that logic, then you'll likely never have a suppressor. What's worse? Not having a suppressor or being on yet another list you're probably already on simply by owning the firearms you do, watching podcasts related to suppressors, google searching whatever other firearms related topics you might be searching, etc. Chances are, if there's a list, we're all probably already on it. Might as well be on it with a suppressor on your gun. At least, that's one way of looking at it. Maybe you feel differently, and that's fine, but people openly discussing the drastically misunderstood topic of suppressors really doesn't seem to be the overarching problem here?

    @Boringunguy@Boringunguy Жыл бұрын
    • Because “silencer” is marketing jargon the inventor used. Just as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea isn’t democratic, silencers don’t silence firearms (with the exception of .22s which get pretty darn close). You’re not wrong to call it a silencer as it’s the name the inventor chose, but you’re also not wrong for calling it a suppressor because the gunshot sound certainly isn’t silenced, only suppressed.
