Sandro Tonali to be banned from football for 10 months after breaching betting rules

Sandro Tonali will be banned from football for 10 months over breaches of rules on betting on matches in Italy, the head of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said on Thursday.
Tonali, who joined Newcastle United from AC Milan this year, must also attend treatment sessions for problem gamblers and give a series of talks about his experience over a further eight-month period as part of an agreement with the FIGC.
That would rule the 23-year-old, a £55million summer signing from AC Milan, out of the remainder of the Magpies' season and Italy's Euro 2024 finals campaign, should they qualify.
Tonali had been assisting the investigation and his legal team have been working on a plea bargain after he admitted to making bets on AC Milan to win games in a hearing at the Italian Federation in Turin.

This kind of punsihment is crazy! The only people being punished here are Newcastle. Tonali gets to play golf for a year on £200,000 a week. Surely the only fitting punishment would be a fine of 90% of his wages for a year while he keeps playing.

We don't really know whether Tonali or Toney have a gambling problem. Football's rules mean those with an addiction get shorter bans. Players want to get back playing football as soon as possible. Being addicted is rightly seen as (at least partly) an excuse for going against the rules and rightly gets sympathy from fans too. Whereas someone caught who is not addicted has no excuses and is more likely to get abuse. Therefore only natural for every player caught gambling to say they're addicted whether they are or not

Because the problem is not him gambling, the problem is him betting on a team he was in. He could've bet on horses, basketball, boxing, anything and he wouldn't get a ban. Again he can bet however he wants, as long as it's not on football.

Honestly a more harsh punishment in terms of the player is deducting 80-90% of his wages for the season along with maybe a 2-3 month ban. Losing money makes these players learn. Instead he going on vacation with 200k per week

This does not offer any player with a gambling addiction who wants to try and get help for a route out. There needs to be a process that allows this without potentially ruining a career. For high profile players in big teams the ban is not as much of a problem as it would be for less high profile players in smaller teams in lower leagues. It just means that players are going to continue to hide their addictions and get themselves into further mental health problems.

I think the severity of the ban is harsh, but 3 months is no deterrent to stop others from doing the same thing. ...Trouble is, how would it have looked if the Italian authorities had banned Tonali from playing for Newcastle... and yet allowed him to play for Italy in the Euros?

Poor decision. If it was betting on the other team to win or for him to get booked then id understand but he literally bet on his team to win, i dont see anything wrong with that.
