To be fair, lord of the rings in space sounds pretty fucking lit
Any excuse to have space dragons is a go 👍🏿
Vin Diesel wanted more sword and sorcery in his space adventure. It was a far more competent attempt than Jupiter Ascending.
I thought while flawed, the series had a lot of interesting new sci fi concepts. Just could have been done better.....
I thought Avengers: Infinity War was going to be "Lord of the Rings in Space". Chronicles of Riddick felt more "Conan in Space".
@@Day7Reset I found the most insane romance novel series that was improperly placed in the Sci Fi section at my bookstore called the Dragon Lords of Valder. It’s about advanced aliens who can also shapeshift into dragons because why not who also somehow end up finding humans in space to instantly fall in love with (despite this taking place in our time when we don’t have interstellar travel) . But it’s also a romance novel series (aka cringey porn in written form) so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re into that sort of thing or just that desperate for dragons in space.
the chronicles of riddick has so much world building that for years i was convinced that it was actually made from a real book series that for some unexplained reason was impossible to find at bookstores. So disappointed when I finally googled it.
I won't google it, it came from a series I just know it ;)
It came from Vin Diesel's love of Dungeons & Dragons. Fantasy nuts will always take the opportunity to worldbuild!

I thought the same thing. And I actually found such a book, called "The Chronicles of Riddick", but it turned out to be what they call "novelization", that is just a book retelling the movie and not very good at that. The only interesting thing about it was that they have added a short history of the "necromongers" as an appendix in the end - not a bad world-building if it was a series, but the story was nothing more than we already knew from the movie...
I actually saw this film before Pitch Black when I was a kid and I absolutely loved it, it’s almost like it isn’t even a sequel, it’s so removed from the first that you don’t even need to have seen it. To this day I think it’s such an underrated film

Nah imma have to disagree with you for the first time ever on this one mate, i love all the riddick movies (and games), each one is different from the next, but the character or Riddick is awesome and it's great to watch him thrust into different scenarios.
Yes. The movie had a few small problems like exploding rocks but nothing that would make it a bad movie. Like, Riddick getting to a "good" planet right before the invasion seems unlikely at first. But then you remember that guy from the first movie sent mercenaries for Riddick exactly *because* he knew about invasion coming. Very logical. And mercenary/bounty hunter catching up with him happened because Riddick used his ship. He tracked his property. Again, makes sense. Etc, etc. - Overall it's a good movie, and vast majority of its problems can be solved with some editing. A few seconds of explanations here and there and some calm periods between action letting confused people to process and understand what's happening and why.
Yeah I am in the same boat, but that's ok. Personal tastes factor in majorly, and I'll be the first to admit that I love all the Riddick movies (and games) despite their flaws, and I love that Vin Diesel clearly likes playing the character.

It’s Pitch Black meets 40k. Call me crazy, but I loved it. Though it did raise questions about the Furians that were never answered. Even though there’s been about 500 follow up movies.
When you find out that Vin Diesel is a massive D&D nerd, this movie makes a weird kind of sense, or at least you can kind of understand why Vin thought it was a good idea. I wonder if he had been playing in a Dark Sun campaign around the time he was making it?
I want Riddick to be in my Dark Sun campaign, but set in the Dune universe.
Vin Desiel is on record for saying that his take of Riddick was basically as a Scifi version of Drow Assassin he played in D&D. A lethal killer with a preference for knives and the ability to see in the dark.
My thoughts exactly!
@@Mister-Thirteen Thought that was The Last Witch Hunter?
@@leadpaintchips9461 He was a fan prior of that movie but yea,
I am ashamed, but not too ashamed, to say that this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine.
Don’t be ashamed of what you like, I think it was a good movie
Don't be ashamed, it's great. Drinker is totally wrong on this one.
I like it too. Overall I suppose it was a failure, but it was a very entertaining, imaginative, and ambitious failure. I much prefer that to a cookie-cutter studio *product*.
Some of Drinker's criticism are valid but not to the point of someone feeling ashamed for liking the movie. The point where he talked about the jail planet sounded like Cinema Sins.
What the real shame is, is that the character of Richard B. Riddick had the potential to become an iconic role for Vin Diesel, much like the T-800 became an iconic role for Schwarzenegger, and it would have been a much better character than Dom Toretto from the Fast and Furious franchise. But, nah, they shat all over it. Hell, they even made a videogame with Riddick, voiced over by Vin Diesel himself, and the story of this videogame actually connects with the rest of the movies, and with the short animated movie they have made with this character. So there was a live action movie, an animated movie, and a videogame (or maybe there were two, I'm not sure, I've only played one), so this was a fantastic opportunity because it is very rare for a movie character to appear in this many areas of entertainment. But they screwed it.
Vin Diesel is a huge Dungeons and Dragons fan, that why this movie is packed full of lore and fantasy. I think it's a ahead of it's time. Fantasy IPs are hot right now in 2023.
I love listening to you echoing the same questions that hit me as I watch a movie..... Maybe I'm not so far off in left field after all.... Can't wait for more!
I've always had a soft spot for the Riddick movies despite their varying degrees of quality.
Same, hope we get a 4th a final one for closure
Pitch Black, imo, is probably the best of the bunch.
They had that unique, stylish feel to them.
It was a fun character. The "Long Lost Furian" bit lost me. He was fine just being a touch stronger / tougher, than a normal man.
@@Clint52279 Hes meant to be Conan in space. The last furian is basically meant to be like the last Atlantian.
The end scene, with Riddick on the throne, is a callback to the end of Conan. Vin Diesel reminding us of that "next Arnold Schwarzenegger" thing.
@Tano I can only imagine how much Vin envies the Rock. Dwayne has MORE muscles AND ACTUAL ACTING SKILLS. He got it all!
I'm surprised the they didn't give him the title "Riddick of Steel" to drive the point home.
Many wars and feuds did Conan fight. Honor and fear were heaped upon his name. In time, he would become a king by his own hand.
I find both Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson pretty bland compared to Schwarzenegger. It's probably not their fault. It's the politically correct age we're living in. Most action movies have been bland and forgettable since the late 90's
@@Antihero297 Arnold is naturally a bigger than life persona. Johnson and Diesel just don't fit into that.
Everything you said about this movie is completely accurate. And I love it!
Soon as I realized Drinker wasn't feeling it, I immediately went to the comments and knew most poeple like this movie, odd as it is
Say what you want, I still enjoyed the movie as an over-the-top action film. The scenes look epic, and everything is shamelessly overdriven. It is a true guilty-pleasure masterpiece in my book.
A masterpiece has to actually be good though. It might be fun but we cant say its good though right?
I fully agree
I agree except for the masterpiece bit. We all know and agree that this movie is trash. If you cut out all the Necromonger nonsense it is actually a pretty tight little heist movie (or escape movie).
So are we gonna ignore the actual riddick sequel the animated second movie ? No? Ok
@@blkvnm6003 What??? 😲
i liked Chronicles of Riddick, the world was interesting and fun.
yeah same, i didn’t think it was meant to be taken too seriously just a fun movie there’s a third movie that’s actually not half bad, more like the first one less space fantasy
Agreed. Chronicles ruled. The Directors cut is the best. That scene on Crematoria where he jumps and hacks off that guys head with the two knives ripped! Well underrated film.
It definitely has its bruh moments but it's a really awesome film. "Do me a favor... dust my dick when you get the chance"
Agreed. This movie rules. Not because it's intelligent or original, but because it's *fun.* You can tell that the actors enjoyed it, too.
@@jeremysmith9291 "Shoudda taken the money, Toombs." "If I owned this place and Hell, I would rent this place out and lived in Hell." "Soon he will be promoted to fully dead."
"I'll be at the pool if you need me ..." LMAO!! Thanks, Drinker, for always giving me those laugh-out-loud moments!
This video genuinely had me laughing through half of it. Thank you DRINKER!
I actually liked the movie, it's a real fun time.
It’s fun but let’s be honest with ourselves it’s not good in the objective sense. However I’ll take sleazy and dumb action popcorn movies over some tired and dull corporate crap they push out or worse boring crap.
@@asher8754 It's not a good movie, but it's enjoyable ... somehow.
I like this movie as well. It's a pretty original take on space science fiction.
Its a fun to watch, but it does have some really cheesy lines that don't fit well with the tone the movie is going for.
Its a really fun movie i don't get the hate
I actually really loved this movie and had zero problems with Vin Diesel's acting. He's great as riddick. This movie has a special classic cult-sci-fi feel to it and the morbid appearance of the necromongers is quite unique and fitting.
Vin Diesel has done some very good acting in other movies, but this one wastes his talent, I find, and undoes all the magical surprises and delights of the first in the series.
@@OronOfMontreal There are some great non-FF and non-Riddick movies starring Vin Diesel (e.g. "Find me guilty). All you need is a good script.
Totally agree... I saw this before I saw Pitch Black so I had no frame of reference and just accepted it as-is and it was great. It's also the first Vin Diesel movie I ever saw (because I don't count The Iron Giant) so that probably helped a lot too.
Necromongers show where Riddick became King I really liked his armor in Riddick and I even bought the movie Riddick watching it now after multiple times.
@@fisharmor I would prefer Riddick over Fast and the Furious myself I bought the Riddick movie and haven't even bought one Fast and the Furious movie.
Loved this film. The seemed to have actually spent a long time opening up this universe and introducing us to lots of new worlds . I actually really enjoyed it.
As someone who watched this as a kid and loved it, I’m not sure how I feel about you tearing it apart. I actually never even saw pitch black, just this gem. Considering it was mostly half done when I’d start (on HBO or whatever) the two parts never really bothered me. I thought it was pretty cool. Where is the sequel?
Always enjoyed this movie...it's a shame they abandoned the story they've built in this one to revert back to a pitch black remake in the next one
Exactly. What a waste.
agreed but the movie still gets mad probs for what riddick dared to say to katee sackhoff's character and the dog was cool
yep, totally agree. surely they could have found a better way to give Riddick a puppy to bond with.... Would have been more bad ass if Riddick and Varko actually messed up a few worlds first, Riddick leads the Necromongers to the edge of Underverse, hands over the reigns to Varko and walks away, even more badass if they have a bro-down first, Riddick wins, but gives the keys to the kingdom to Varko anyway..... Free will and all that. in return Varko gives him a ship and a crew, some hot Necro chicks and the coordinates to Furia to start anew, and a token repayment for the previous Lord Marshall's genocidal rampage, closing scene of the movie... Varko at the gates of Underverse with an intentionally cringe video call to Riddick.... "i'll be back" License to print sequel dollar dollar bills y'all 😵
You're correct
It´s not remake, it´s basically Pitch Black 2 - it´s like poetry, it rhymes! And it was made because of people like Drinker and because of lack of budget. It has IMO the best scene of all these movies: that one where Riddick trolls Johns senior and he totally explodes: "Maybe in the last minute of your life you could be something else than GODDAMN SAVAGE!!!!!"
It's the 1st time I disagree. Actually had a good time watching this film.
Yep he's right about a lot and yet I love the film.
This movie makes no sense but i love it
Welcome to the comments
I love it, so goofy it is cool.
This is the first drinker review im not listening a word too, Im just reading every comment about how everyone loved this film! I loved it. I still do and I will rewatch it anyday.
I love the Riddick movies, especially this one. I also love the Drinker's assessment of movies and ability to break them down into the heart and story elements. I was honestly glad to see the comments for this review though. Even the Drinker can't be on point every time! Excellent movie and I keep hoping for a fourth Riddick movie. I really liked the third one but I was just a little disappointed with how they didn't explore the unexpected twist at the end of This one, Chronicles of Riddick. I think Riddick is my favorite role for Vin Diesel. I mean I love Groot, but it's difficult to sense anything to do with Diesel... but that's a story for another time. Cheers to all the fellow Riddick lovers! And cheers to the Drinker for making such great content (and hey, we all like different movies and books that others simply do not enjoy)
This movie is a guilty pleasure for me. Watched it more times than I should, probably. Gonna watch it again now that you reminded me of it.
When I saw it, it wasn’t as good as Pitch Dark but I still had fun with it.
Same. About to watch the entire trilogy again.
I usually agree with your analysis but this movie is fun and a decent effort.
Agreed. Was quite surprised way back when.
@@badbilly7499 why does a sequel have to follow the exact formula of the original lol? What kind of cultist weed are you smoking?
@@The420kingchronic It's not that the movie isn't a remaster of Pitch Black, it's that it essentially took Riddick into a different universe with different rules and tried to pretend it didn't. Imagine if the next CSI spinoff took place on Mars, complete with native Martians and breathable atmosphere, and we were expected to believe that it was the exact same universe as every other one.
@@angrymokyuu1951 what different universe? Pitch Black had no universe or story to speak of, just a boring low budget crap.
Exactly.
This movie is so broken, convoluted and dumb... I love it.
Wow, never seen The Drinker get so much opposition 😂 I watched this movie once years ago and from what I remember, it was pretty good…Gona have to give it a rewatch to spite you son 👌🏼🤣 love the videos as always though 👍🏼
"This entire sequence is absolute insanity" - so is the entire movie and that's why I love it.
but really the way the Drinker broke it down was amazing, lol.... "Vin Diesel had to outrun the Sun".....great content
Not the entire movie, but yeah that sequence where they had to run like 15 miles on that surface is kind of unbelievable.
My most favorite underrated sci-fi series.
Agreed all 3 of them are amazing!
Yeah I remember watching this at night when I was younger I enjoyed it.
The videogames are also very good.
@@redharrison894 is there 3 ?
@@redharrison894 4 if you count the animated movie between 1 and 2.
It had to happen eventually... You finally had a very different opinion of a movie than I did. You raise some definite plot weaknesses, but I still love this flick. Keep up the great work, Drinker.
All these things are undeniably true. But do I genuinely love the movie still? Yes.
I loved the Chronicles of Riddick. There’s so much potential to explore.
Personally I’m waiting for the next one. I mean riddock survived his assassination attempt and got off of not furya. Plus that prison scene and the escape is so awesome
I love the Riddick movies. I hope they make a 4th one where he finds his home world.
@@MikesGlitch that's what he's referencing. Krone betrays Riddick and attempts to kill him, and leaves him stranded on the planet Riddick dubs "Not Furya". He gets off the planet at the end of the film, Elyas was saying he can't wait for what comes afterwards.
I love The Chronicles of Riddick.
Hell yeah! I’m still mad to this day that they didn’t follow it up properly with ‘Riddick’ and instead made that more into Pitch Black again 🤦🏾♂️
@@BlackstarSI I LOVE The Chronicles of Riddick, i love all the Riddick movies, i cannot understand that people do not like The Chronicles of Riddick, but the best version is The Chronicles of Riddick Unrated Director's Cut, that one is fantastic. The Chronicles of Riddick Unrated Director's Cut is a great movie with great actors and a great special fx and a great story.
@@AmigaWolf couldn’t agree more my friend 💯💯
@@BlackstarSI I agree. I enjoy the 3rd one but it’s obviously just retread of Pitch Black. But at least it has a Katee Sackhoff topless.
To be honest, I'm a little surprised the Drinker is so hard on this film. I really only agree with his sentiment that the film is bonkers. Perhaps that's one of the reasons I like it. It is all over the place, and completely nuts. I hope, before Vin is too old to play the character, that somebody or some company ponies up the cash to give us his journey into the Underverse. My Dad also really likes the movie, to the point that he's the only 60+ years old retired podiatrist that I know that would unironically say "you keep what you kill....it's the necromonger way!" while eating a steak.
Thanks for reminding me of this gorgeous, crazy movie, time for a rewatch ! Always thought this universe would be great for a MMORPG
