Open All Hours
Season One, Episode One - 20 Feb. 1976
Stuttering shopkeeper Arkwright, assisted by his much put upon nephew Granville runs the corner shop in a suburb of Doncaster, boasting that it is open all hours. When not pursuing Gladys Emanuel, the district nurse who lives opposite the shop, Arkwright is ever on the look-out to save money, such as buying a load of fire-damaged tinned food. Unfortunately the damage means that all the labels have come off so nobody knows exactly what they are meant to be buying.
Absolute comedy gold... the good old days.. legends like the late Ronnie barker... absolute godfathers of comedy...thanks for uploading these fantastic treasures of yesteryear... a brilliant cast... genius writing and nostalgia at its best!!😅
I'm an American who loves British humor. I actually feel sorry for people who don't get it.
I feel that the reason so many Americans love British humour is because by and large its self depreciating , not smug trying to show how smart one is.
RIP Nurse Glady's. I will do a binge of these episodes now, right through the seasons. What a great comedy. All made before I was born. Todays comedy comes nowhere close to classics like this
Exactly.
Here for the same reason. God bless ms Baron

Oh man, I'm so happy I found this. My dad and me used to watch this back in the day. Thank you for having this up.
A fond remnant of a bygone era when the world still made sense and flowed at a gentler, more gracious pace. I'd happily forgo all my "digital toys" to leave the cesspool of 2023 to go back in live in the 70s and early 80s again.
👍
Yes me too.
I couldn`t agree more. I think it`s the digital toys and technology that makes 2023 such a swampy cesspool to begin with.
You're lucky you got to grow up in this era. I was born in the 90s and can only look back and wish I'd been born earlier
Take me back to the 90s
One of the best TV series from UK.
I was brought up with this comedy. An early part of my childhood. RIP Ronnie. You're still sadly missed.
I remember as a kid my mum watching this in the 70s and over 40+yrs later I'm now watching them so good this programme is
Almost 50 year mush
And here I am in 2022 still enjoying it immensely. All my Father ‘s side came from Yorkshire. My sister & I spent all our school holidays with Nana & Grandad in Huddersfield that had corner shops just like this, Monday market & the Rag & Bone man. Geez, wonderful memories !!!!!
This wasnt the 70s Ronnie was doing the two ronnies then
I’m going to Google it because I’m sure open all hours started in the 70s! But I remember the two Ronnies also but no matter what they were both great 👍 shows
The 1st episode was aired in 1976 on bbc 2!
I'm living in a country far from home. l get homesick but this epic show takes me back to my childhood. God bless you all.
My dad watched this show and Are you Being Served. Last of the Summer Wine for years, I grew up enjoying these shows too😊
Ronnie Barker was able to make Albert Arkwright a miserly and irascible yet lovable character. He was a brilliant comedic actor.
I never knew his name was Albert!! ty for that tidbit of Intel! Still watching thru this Covid nightmare!
I never knew what Arkwrights first name was! TY😊
Kush DigwaJ
I've always wondered what his first name was
Ronnie Barker and David Jason are both comic geniuses 👍
agreed
@@adammoore442 🎉 😂
Here here‼️
I agree
I do an impression on my channel of Arkwright!
Master Ronnie Baker and his apprentice David Jason! Brilliant pair
I keep watching them, never tire of this humour.
I thought I was the only one who did lol
I remember as a kid we had three shops like these about a mile apart on the corner selling everything from penny sweets to tobacco bread and cakes Ronnie Barker and David Jason both comedy gold why cannot they make similar programs today beats me
Aside from the razor-sharp script, perfect performances, and spot-on direction, I love watching these just to see the prices. Butter for 21p - I wish I was living there and then, instead of here and now. Ah, well. I'm also from the North myself, which makes me doubly nostalgic. True comedy legends all!
Validating when people not even born enjoy. So, it is not just nostalgia. American here living in San Diego who grew up in the UK in the 70’s and developed an abiding appreciation for British humor (humour). Deeply grateful 🎉
Still as funny as ever. So much better than a lot of modern programs.
I like these old shows because they feel and look at lot more real. The modern, polished sets just sing fake to me.
And you can hear every word they say, unlike most of the audio on present day TV. It proves there is nothing wrong with my ears, it's the sound quality!
I agree. In my opinion BBC is tops when it comes to knowing what writers and directors to hire for producing sitcom series.
Much better than all the modern programmes
I'm a Yank and this program is most def a top drawer and feel good times in history. Thank you to the entire cast.
Check out 'Dinnerladies' with the legendary but now sadly departed Victoria Wood.
I remember this being on tv when I was a kid here in Australia. With the net, I go months without watching the tv these days. How times change - it's rare to even find little stores like this anymore, amazing how much can change in a lifetime!
My American cousin said it was her husband's favourite show on BBC America. Although sometimes he asked her to explain some things as her mother was my English aunt.
Definitely watch Only Fools and Horses
Only fools and horses is a must watch if u enjoy this.
I quite miss Ronnie Barker sadley missed and always remembered for being very funny always enjoyelbe
This makes a tad homesick . I lived near Doncaster and those shop's sold everything even good. The shopkeeper always knew their regular customer. Been in Australia since 1981 and this show reminds me of the shop we use before the likes of Aldi. Love seeing what's on the shelves and the prices
this is a comfort watch for me, when i cant sleep i listen to this and feel like i was back when i was a kid. awesome watch
Love how Arkwright stutters even in his head.
@@andersongames0237 Love it.
I NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING OPEN ALL OURS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH TO ALL THE ARTISTS

Sad news today of the passing of Lynda Baron.May your soul rest in peace . Thank you for all the memories
what a classic! that cash register though 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The 2 ronnies magic will live on forever i so miss them god bless their comedy magic
This series was absolutely brilliant - I adored them then and still adore them now - SO FUNNY - wish we had real humour again.
I love this old show. I don't know why, but I find it cozy and comforting in some sort of odd way. Maybe how it starts off in the early morning before the sun comes up, the music, I don't know. But I always love to watch it. Thank you for posting some of the shows so we can always watch one or two when we feel like it.
Me too.
BlueGrassFan - Spot on. You've described how I feel about it too.
@BlueGrassFan couldn't agree with you more
"I don't know why, but I find it cozy and comforting in some sort of odd way.". I find exactly the same. The old shop, it's products and prices help that along too. Mixed emotions watching the shows i used to watch.
@@MM0SDK A very nice piece of nostalgia, where u local Grocer was a major part of the community& not just somewhere where u bought ur Loaf of Bread!.But I haven't watched this in yrs&it still passes the test of time!..A Classic!👍
Look how young Nurse Gladys Emmanuel is! Such a beauty and a great comedic actor!!
Look out for her in an episode of Up Pompeii with Frankie Howerd.
Rest in peace, Lynda Baron.
Plain and simple comedy at its best!!! Love the scene with MR BRISTOW! Inspired - just inspired!! Granville: *who was it?* Arkwright: *Apollo Three, the plastic astronaut!* Sublime!!
Love it.
The look in this age of David Jason is almost perfect with wonderful sensible personality.
Haven't watched this in years, TV Gold.
F, fer, fer, fer, *#*#ing brilliant. Watched the originals and enjoying it again, 50 years later. Oh, and I went to school with Gloria!
It was always so funny watching David Jason playing an 19 year old, while knowing full well that he was 38 years old when the series started and 45 when the series ended.
I think in one of the first episodes he said he was 25.
@@np100 And in some others he mentioned he was 19. As usual in sitcoms, ages of characters change as time goes by without any explanation or sense. But, one way or another, Granville was alot younger than David Jason was.
Never knew his real age while he was in this role- never knew how he came to be Granville at his age. They were an absolute incredible comedy team!! 😎
He didn't look 19 so wasn't fooling anyone
@@annazaman9657 That is exactly my point. In fact, during the final season, which coincided with Only Fools and Horses, Jason wore a hair piece to hide the fact that he was rapidly balding.
I'm American but I far prefer British TV to ours, especially true of the older stuff. Found this one recently and fell in love with it. Now to find myself a copy of it to buy. Thanks for uploading it, I would have never known about it otherwise.
Absolutely.

Gosh the sign at 1:00 takes me back. In the 70's my uncle purchased a store in Nottingham and it came with boxes and boxes of old stock, including a lot of Maid Marian canned goods. Haven't seen them in years. Thanks for uploading, this was a great series.
Iam from Brooklyn,NY USA. I have watched ENGLISH COMEDIES since the 80's.THEY ARE THE BEST.
Good for you. I didn't know that Open All Hours was showing in America. Was it on PBS?
charlie zicolillo Thanks Mate !!!
@@marylynch948 Yes it was.
There is a current version with Granville as the shop owner and his son as the delivery boy. It's called Still Open all Hours.
@@colinp2238 On one hand, it's amazing that the original writer and an original big star (David Jason) are still around 4+ decades later and are active enough to do such a late sequel. On the other, I hear it's gotta some poor reviews. Hope it's not too embarrassing to the classic's legacy (and to Jason who I respect a lot for having also done "Only Fools and Horses")
God Bless Ronnie Barker. One of the funniest wordsmiths ever. NORA BATTEY!!! Ooh them wrinkled stockings..
Enjoying this one... love the old British comedies and mysteries
In a row and in the right order!! What more could you ask for!!?. AWESOMENESS ❤️

Oh
I will never get tired watching these awesome English comedy ❤❤❤❤
They don't make shows quite like this anymore 😢💖
Quite right, the swedish backy tin was genius
True! Because the PC brigade has no sense of humour. Shows like "Minder" etc will never be made again. PC shitheads, I hope they burn in hell.
PC idiots have ruined everything
Hannah Melissa, there is still 5 series of STILL OPEN ALL HOURS
in USA they never did!
Love all of Roy Clarke's wonderful shows!
He was a great banjo player too.
Legends that we will never see again. The good times before the world became soft putting an end to what can and can't be said.
@@andersongames0237 I know.
In today's PC world, this line probably couldn't be said " even Negroes come out looking pale" - it's the funniest line in the show
90% of the jokes in these shows could still be written today. It's nothing to do with the world being 'soft'.
It's hard to determine which British comedy was the best because they were all brilliant, sad these days have gone.
Love nurse Gladys when I feel a bit depressed I watch open all hours lift your spirit 👍👍
Absolutely 👌🏻👌🏻
Nurse Gladys is Lily Bless Her from Last of the Summer Wine Christmas special lol love these old shows. Thanks for sharing 💚🌹💚
Love this,, the bloody good old days,, and Soooooo very much of it rings true,, 50's 60's 70's ,, the golden years!!

Norman Stanley Fletcher, Del Boy and Nora Batty in one room. 😂😂
You're forgetting Aunty Mabel.

Still Open All Hours has managed to bring back all the classics. Quality show :)
Just bought the DVD boxset so I can re-watch a very funny show. Watched a few on Yesterday (UK TV Channel) last night and I was laughing so much.

I've been watching these episodes over and over for years. I love the sequel still open all hours. My uncle Lawrence ran a very small little grocery store out of an old house much like this setup so it's like a happy little trip to his store. The BBC has said they have not canceled the new series and are working on plans for a 7 series as soon as they can film around the covid-19 virus. Since Granville proposed in the last show I'm really hoping for one more episode at least so we can see him get married to Mavis
Mavis is so sweet!
Fabulous sitcom with wonderful actors :-)
First time I'm watching this and what a lovely little series.
I was looking for allo allo, but this will do just fine :D
i was born in 1968, and i always loved this show.
Ronnie Barker what legend sadly no longer with us rip mate.
Now that Gladys is up there, I wonder if Arkwright will chat her up again. I bet he will.
even though im 17 and this is way before my time, this is by far a classic.

Cool?
Great accent from David Jason.
Arwkright: "Rushing away to somebody's bedside. One day, with any luck, it might be mine." Granville: "Let's hope not. She is a midwife." Genius exchange.

From the height of British Comedy to the depths it plummeted to Inbetweeners and any other garbadge of today
When he suddenly got better, jumped up and ran into Nurse's house! 🤣
I was born in 1984 so missed out on living through these times, everything just looked so much simpler. I think i was born in the wrong time, im always watching these programmes and reminiscing on an era i didnt even live through.

Open All Hours, Porridge, Steptoe and Son and Only Fools and Horses... Whenever I'm feeling in bad place, they always manage to bring a smile to my face.
first time watching this series and I love it. thanks for posting it.
The sequel series "Still Open All Hours" is just as good as the original, and shows the legacy that Granville follows after the death of his mentor/father, and how he handles his inheriting of the shop. Utter joy, all round, and beats the living daylights out of modern day "comedy" series.
Arkwright was actually his uncle.
1975 was up Norwich to watch a football match on the bus home lady said been to see Ron cottber in Norwich that night 3:37 3:37

I am only 15, but I have grown up watching lots of old comedy with my parents. In fact, I have only about 5 different comedy programs in my collection of DVDs from the last 10 years. Most of the comedy I find funny is no less than 10 years old. My mum and dad convinced me to try this program out when I was about 8, because I really enjoyed David Jason in Only Fools And Horses. It was the first time I ever watched Ronnie Barker. They were both legends, as was Linda Baron. And 7 years later, I think this is my favourite comedy of all time. Also, I’m not sure what happened at 18:59, but I’m not sure if I want to know.
