Sad to see how shitty some mechanics are
Most just want money for no work. Typical of many nowadays sadly.
Yeah what a disappointment it can be
For real. The LITERALLY first time I went to a mechanic because I hat misfires, he told me it was most likely the distributor and or sparkplugs. He told me it was difficult to do and all in all would cost me about 300 bucks. We made out an appointment and the very same day I made my research to find out that the parts if I bought them myself would cost me 70 tops. Not to mention how easy it actually was to replace. Sufficed to say I didn't show up to that appointment
@@barneystinson6331 Good for you! Not everyone has the gumption to research something like that, let alone take on the task of performing the work themselves. I learned to work on cars not out of interest, but out of necessity; I had no money to pay a mechanic. With time, it did end up being something I enjoyed, and similar to Chris' reaction here, when you fix something and you get to see/hear it run...it is euphoric.
Oh ultimate making ! Je ne m'attendais pas à te voir là !

It amazes me that some mechanics will just throw expensive parts at a problem . No system tests , no thought whatsoever as to cost. I love the step by step process you use. I have lost count of all the motorized things I have fixed using the same exact method . Well done Chris.
The parts aren’t that expensive they get you on the labor
Some parts def do cost an arm and leg. But most of the time it seems like some mechanics don’t know what they’re doing or do care enough to go through a process of analysis
This is the reason I say all mechanics are thieves and I refuse to take my car to a workshop ever again! They have us sussed! They take it for granted most ppl don't know about cars or engines so they pull the wool over our eyes. Why should the neighbour have paid for all that shit when the car still wouldn't start!?! Because they want money
@@mrarmy8744 Y'all really don't know what you're talking about and don't know shit about cars, do you? It's pretty freaking simple. Because a mechanic has to provide a warranty. And just by looking under that valve cover, this thing is NOT going to run for a long time, or even run great. It did not have the required oil changes for a long time. That engine needs proper maintenance, what you've seen under the valve cover is a BIG SYMPTOM of a MUCH bigger issue. Imagine how the crankshaft bearings are if the cam and rockers are looking like that. That engine needs a rebuild and thorough clean, at the very least. I expect the bearings won't be looking too good either. He got the engine to run, but he didn't completely fix all of its problems.
@@mrarmy8744Would be better to actually fix the problem, too, no? That way the customer comes back?
What surprised me was the fact that despite the context of the guy's car suddenly stopping at a stop light, the mechanic replaces parts which don't go out all at once like that

After having taken apart and rebuilt a 2.0L Ford Focus motor, I can say that the convenient access to the timing belt tensioner and crank rotation/balancer is the stuff dreams are made of. Wish chain-driven engines could somehow engineer that.

@@chrisfix Soapy Wooder actually went into a running gag between me and my brother during working on our cars. Your advices and tipps are great :D - Best greetz!
Avatar reference
What could be the cause of the slack timing?
Appeared to be a loose timing belt tensioner. He shows tightening belt tension and then the nut to hold tensioner is tightened securely. Good thing it was a non-interference engine otherwise would be valve or valve and piston damage. Makes timing belt checks/changes very important on these types of engines.
And this is exactly why I started working on my own cars. Shops cannot diagnose a problem anymore, all they want to do is replace a bunch of parts that may be related to the issue. ChrisFix has saved me a ridiculous amount of money plus the satisfaction of fixing your own stuff is amazing.

This video is absolutely perfect for basics, but two things to note if you are trying to diagnose a no start vehicle; On some newer cars, the immobilizer can cause a no start, and can be hard to check without a professional/dealer workshop If the timing is out, some vehicles run interference engines, meaning valves can be bent, which would be diagnosed through the engine compression test, but important to know this.

Bro. Chris makes this seem so simple. It takes a genius to make such complicated things so simple. Appreciate you man!
I have to say, I love your content! You’re very thorough with explaining things!!!
Epic! I did these exact steps on my new E30 Touring last month. It had been sat for 6 years. It was a bad ECU in my case, making only three injectors work. Tested LITERALLY everything before swamping out the ECU. This video is so helpful to someone who doesn't know. Cheers Chris!
E30 touring! 👍
Wasn't expecting you here! Can't wait to see your E30 restoration video!
Hey, I watch your videos too. I love/enjoy your channel so much!!!
Awesome job man! Crazy the ECU went. Were you able to open it up and look at what went bad? Also congrats on the E30!
I could imagine being the neighbor hearing an engine running and ChrisFix celebrating an hour after giving him the car
Lmao
I would like to see his reaction while he tells him he fixed in.
@@gerardoreyes6256 The guy: 😐 (I put 1200$ into this car to fix it and this dude just made it run for free?)

Waaoh. I don't know why i also got excited. I never thought it will run with those simple initiatives.. Thanks man so educative
Probably the best video ever on car repair

Do a video on how to clean the gunk, replace the things that need to be changed, clean it up a bit, Sell it and Split the money with your neighbor
I'd love to see that video also.
This. As a followup to superclean your engine bay: superclean your actual engine!
Revisiting an old video with a new project of mine. I checked out your subs..its been a while for me. Congrats on killing it man, you truly deserve it. 🙂
Seeing chris excited like that was pretty surprising. Its crazy how he knew exactly where everything was and how to align the timing correctly.
lets be honest, it was a Honda so it did like half the work by itself already
Love how this comment is 1 week old and He still gave you heart
Joel Cardoso Thats Chris for you.
DieselJS I think you mean crish... lmao
Well Honda’s never die like my grandpa has a honda from 1960 and he said if it dies I can sell it and it never dies like we went through a fucking lake and it shut off and 30 mins later it started
zeroh what? It’s Chris...
"Like a good neighbor, Chris Fix is there."😊
Haha

so informative! Thanks Chris!
I dont even have a car and im watching these, theyre so interesting and your video format is so good. Saving up for a car at the moment and going to use your short shifter video definitely! Nice work Chris 😊
I can't believe a garage would miss the timing like that... That is such a common issue and one of the first things i check for myself!.
Not all but mechanics 9 times out of 10 try and rip you off speaking from experience and stories.
@@cipherthedemonlord8057 I agree and disagree. They generally aren't out to rip you off but wind up doing so because they are just parts replacers and not diagnosticians or actual technicians. If you follow the five steps before replacing parts, consider yourself smart hahaha
I towed my Miata to a spec Miata shop when it broke down, to do a timing belt job. They did it wrong, broke my camshaft, and replaced the camshaft wrong too (caps were out of order). They sent the car back to me after 3 months not running, and charged me an arm and a leg for their work. If anybody knows Miatas, it's them, right? Nope, they failed. I took it apart myself and had it running in 2 days. The new cam was unfortunately beyond saving (it was scored to the point that is was binding to the caps even in the right order) and it broke in half on the highway, taking the head with it. I sold the car with a blown motor. What did I learn from that? It's best to work on your own car, Chrisfix style! I don't trust anybody with my cars anymore, so I do everything myself so I know exactly how every nut and bolt on my car was treated.
But but muh computer said replace computer and distributor. Muh computer didn’t say check timing. Lol.
Chris does this the old school way. That’s exactly the problem with so called mechanics now. They don’t even comprehend old school checks.
This was the video that really solidified my interest in cars. ChrisFix is a gift from heaven. Edit: so I already liked cars before this, but I saw this video a week after it came out, and then I knew, I _really_ liked cars. I've loved them ever since.

Chris has a passion for cars that you can hear in his voice. I love his “cars for dummies” approach and patience for us cars 101 guys. You ROCK Chris!!!
Perfect video. Im glad you got excited.
Such a great Video and congrats on getting it back to life.
This guy is the best and most helpful youtube mechanic
He's the best and most helpful youtuber period.
The Dislikes Are The Mechanics Who Couldn’t Fix This Car!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Probably a few from the shop that worked on it.
You show me who dislikes Chris I will beat them in the head with their Fisher price wrench
or could be all the mechanics that are PISSED OFF about Chris Fix giving away trade secrets. lol the mechanics that spent tens of thousands on technical school to learn these things that Chris Fix is teaching everyone on video for free... i can see how they can be angry about this... But if most mechanics werent liars, thieves and untrustworthy, we wouldnt have to find out how to do it ourselves. a good honest mechanic is so hard to find. i remember when i was young, my mother got ripped off by a mechanic, they broke a sparkplug off in the engine, then made my mother pay to fix their mistake. can u imagine?!
That's a crap load of Mechanics
I want to start a car project Chris! Watching your videos motivate me! You just make it look so easy man, and fun! Good work!
This the best clip that explain how to diagnostic the death engine. Thank you ChrisFix you are great man.
Honestly I’ve been in automotive since I was 13, worked at a few different shops and dealerships, but the way it’s explained in this video is this 1. Informative 2. Clear and simple to the point 3. Explained ln very simple detail and what the job requires He’s literally taught me a few things as well and maintained in my memory for future projects definitely one of the best I seen and that’s coming from a guy who’s worked next to master techs and body repair men. Keep up the good work man your teachings is very professional simple and gives people a better understanding on many different areas that you go over on vehicles if that’s mechanical diagnostics to body repair for the at home joe A+ rating in my book
Do you honestly believe the belt was the problem? If it so far out of timing the valves would be as bent as liberace..
@@geoffreycasey875 The comment I was looking for, Chris was extremely lucky that the valves never contacted, as you know it's an interference engine. 9/10 times when that timing belt skips a sprocket tooth it's game over.. I mean the money Chris got from this video alone is worth way, way more than that engine so maybe he loosened the belt just to make a video.. hate to think people do things like that but we all know it happens on KZhead..
Dude the way you structure the problem solving is better than many academics.
makes it much easier for us non-mechanic people to understand cars.
I’ve been really wanting to learn how to work on my own car more and all ur videos i’ve been watching have been so helpful and motivating thank you soo much!! great content!
Maybe the mechanic who charged big money as he was guessing his way through should watch your Video at least 5..6 times then maybe he’ll know how to problem solve by doing these simple straightforward basics. Awesome video for learners
