What if there was an Empire-focussed short Star Wars animation, drawn with the crazy detail and shading of classic 80s anime that's all but vanished from Japan nowadays?
Well, I tried my best. Apologies in advance for not living up to Venus Wars standards.
Drawn and animated by yours truly over 4 years' worth of weekends, with music by the living guitar solo Zak Rahman and sound design by up and coming audio technician Joseph Leyva. Fans of Lucasarts' seminal 1994 TIE Fighter game may notice a few familiar sights and sounds. That “incoming missile” noise gives me horrible flashbacks to this day...

Special thanks to the good folk at Lucasfilm for encouraging people to get creative and make these kind of projects. It's thanks to their extremely fan-friendly nature that we can enjoy IMPS: The Relentless, TROOPS, etc.
Don't support me on Patreon, because I don't have one! (actually, as of Jan 13th 2017 I do, but only to pay the rent T___T) And don't donate to my Kickstarter, because I don't have one of those either. Instead, if you enjoyed this, give someone at your workplace, uni, school or whatever a random bar of chocolate or can or Coke or something. Seriously, it'll probably make their day.
That would totally make my day.
Hello everyone! Thanks for all the kind comments. I'm glad you like seeing the Empire's TIE series getting some well-deserved screentime! In case you're wondering what I'm up to now, here's an update video: kzhead.info/sun/hpquisqMiahmfmg/bejne.html (It has a bunch of clips from other projects I've animated that you might not have seen, so take a look if you want to see spaceships exploding!) People getting mad about Rebels losing, but you need to remember this is usually what happens to the rebels when they directly confront the Empire
Yeah but normally the rebels had mc80's with them and those could take on star destroyers head on like in the battle of endor.
Ethanoux I dunno what you're even talking about
Ethanoux Nah, I'm good, I really don't care what it is, maybe it could 1v1 a star destroyer, but the Empire is never going to play it fair and fight the Rebellion with anything other then as much overwhelming force as it can bring to bear Which was kind of my entire point, the Rebels are CONSTANTLY outnumbered and outgunned
Only an idiot "plays it fair" in warfare. The goal is to eliminate the enemy's capability to conduct warfare while ensuring your own capability is minimally affected.

I like the added touch that the TIE Interceptor Pilot is clearly the oldest, looks like a long time gruff veteran who’s been through hell and back and has taken the two younger pilots under his wing. It’s very lore accurate, at least in Legends, since TIE Interceptor pilots typically were senior pilots hand picked due to their experience and piloting skills. Giving the oldest guy an Interceptor and making him the leader of the trio is an amazing touch, and not to mention just how lore accurate everything else about this animation is. I can definitely tell that the animators were big fans of the EU and likely played a lot of EAW. I’d love to see a whole Star Wars movie, where the Empire are the “protagonists”, like this.
Even better, he played a lot of TIE Fighter, the 90's flight sim game where you play as an Imperial fighter pilot (2nd game in the X-Wing series). This is just *full* of nods back to that game. The pilot ready room map display, the cockpit displays, all of them straight out of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games.
I believe the saying was “your average tie jockey is stupid, your average interceptor pilot’s suicidal, but the defender jockeys? They’re stupid *and* suicidal, that’s what makes them so dangerous”
Yeah, it rewards people who flipped through the books an articles on different ships and weapons. Loved seeing the Interdictor-class and how it gave context to the battle. Also how the admiral switched tactics and fired the ion cannons to disable the transport. Great stuff.

Really like how there is a cool back and forth and significance to everything. Both forces being competent. The rebels fighters having visible shielding while ties don’t, the calibrations before firing, switches being flipped and indicators going off, people going to different stations, orders being given, countermeasures being deployed. its all just very satisfying and weighty.
Didn't the TIEs have shields in the Tie Fighter games? It's been decades but I thought I remember being able to switch shields around to double-front like they mention in A New Hope.

This, ladies and gentlemen. Is what happens when you strip away the rebel’s invulnerable plot armor, absolute annihilation.
Yep
Absolutley right!
Well rebel ships were superior in design like how tie fighters, interceptors, and bombers didn’t have shields along with Star destroyers overly exposed shield generators. Pair this with the fact that Tarkin one of the empires best was killed. Also grand admiral thrawn didn’t lead many battles until after Endor.
Three star destroyers worth of Tie's VS some fighters and bombers, transport ships and a medical ship.Outcome might have been different if they fought against Mon Calamari ships, especially MC80 Home One class cruisers.

One guy did this. This shows what one person with dedication, knowledge of the lore, and passion can win out against multimillion dollar productions.
Actually 3 the music and part of the animation was made by other guys. But yes
It shows what merit, TALENT, and passion can create, you can have millions of dollars like Disney but if that isn't spent wisely it means next to nothing in terms of quality.
Very true but it's also worth noting this took four years to make and it must have been hard on him because he so far hasn't made another. This is a fantastic video and I've watched it multiple times but still, four years for seven minutes of content isn't exactly what you'd call efficient. Sure, it'd be great if the official creators could put stuff of this quality out but it would take even a dedicated team AGES to make something like this but at a length fans would find acceptable.
@@Goldenkitten1 Well, with more than one man, obviously better tech, money and time used efficiently, we could get wonders like these longer than 7 minutes in maximum of 2 years

Star Wars Visions is cool and all, but be honest. This 7 minute anime animated short is literally the best shit ever!
There's just so much of an extended universe that many of us older fans grew up on that they could try different things aimed at different audiences and see what sticks, a few movies and series is, honestly, just barely scratching the surface. Having just gone to Disneyland, what they have is cool, and very entertaining, but it feels like such a missed opportunity considering the rich gaming legacy they have. As someone who spent many hours playing the TIE Fighter game, I would have happily flown a TIE fighter/bomber/interceptor or done some other piloting for the Imperial Navy if there was an experience like that over there.
Would you really trust Disney at this point to do an anime series right?
@@zeroelus I'm still sad that they trashed the extended universe for the current startwars movies there was so much good stuff in there
@@TWEAKLET Yeah so much good stuff in there and they just threw it out. Which sucks since, IMO, there's some really good moments in "modern" Star Wars and if they built off that it could work, for proof I say look at said good moments, they're related to the old characters: The battle of Scariff and *that* boarding scene with Vader in Rogue One, the moments Darth Vader shows up in the Obi Wan series, either to wrestle a ship with just pure force or his last battle with Obi-Wan. There's some real good moments in there, but critically, nothing related to the new characters. And of the rides I mentioned over at Disneyland, the one we enjoyed more as a family was piloting the Millennium Falcon, going back to the point that I come back to watch this video based on my time playing TIE Fighter, on the Force Awakens ride when you're "captured" by the Imperials...I felt at home at the Imperial ship and was so happy to see all the storm troopers and TIE Fighters wizzing around. I wanted to stay there, that was the highlight of the ride for me, not seeing the new character's animatronics or what not. I have 2 young girls for whom Rey is squarely aimed at. After their experience in Disneyland, my girls only care about hanging out with Chewie and want to meet Leia, they know Rey exists but that's about it. @@emperorteasder993 Nah dude, no need. I'm already President of the Galaxy
You know what? I can see the stories behind the main characters in this short. The fleet commander is a gentleman of class and bearing who received a prestigious commission when he joined because he comes from a wealthy family. However, his wealth and privilege don't dull his skills and he is a competent and ruthless career Navy officer. The pilot in the TIE fighter is the idealistic rookie who joined out of a sense of duty and a desire for adventure. He's kind of like Luke from Episode IV and just wants to do a good job and impress his superiors. The lady in the TIE Bomber is the fanatic daredevil who has had to claw her way to where she is with grit, determination, and a strong desire to see the Rebellion wiped off the face of the galaxy. She's insanely talented, but her scars and flying style show that she takes a lot of unnecessary risks and she doesn't play well with others. The older guy in the TIE Interceptor is the most senior pilot on the ship and the quiet badass who is probably the best pilot in the entire fleet. He has been doing this for a very long time and he is too tired and too wise to get caught up in messages and ideology. However, he refuses to accept a promotion, reasoning that if he keeps flying and working with the next generation of pilots he can help them stay alive a bit longer. Anyway, those are my thoughts and a big reason why I keep coming back to this film over and over again. Thank you for this, and I do hope there is more in the future.
Can you do this for the Xwing dude too please?

The fleet commander is Commander Gaunt. There isn't much known about his past, except that he quickly became best pal with Tarkin, because they share the same political and strategic idea. He is a very competent officer, that always use the same tactic, that is so efficient it work everytime (probe possible rebels hideout, wait for month until one is spotted, jump on it, send waves of TIE while interdictor stop ay ship to jump outta there and force the ennemy to fight or surrender). He love fruit, offer fruit basket to his subordinate, is terrible with a blaster, but deadly with his fist and his basically an anime character when he give an order. The TIE pilot is petty officer Neel that is fresh (1 years) out the flight academy. He is a hotshot pilot that profit from the law regulation of the outer rim to grow his out of fashion sideburns. He is a Gaunt fanboy, because Gaunt don't use his TIE like canon fodder, which give him better chance to survive any battle and his biggest fear is some fighter landing a lucky hit on the bridge. He has a crush on the TIE bomber pilot (but she don't realise it). He ask to much question in briefing, despise A-wing (because they keep blowing his ass in the simulator) and has 20 confirmed kill. The TIE bomber pilot is flight lieutenant Ada. She is generally laid back, but she is a total bomber craft nutjob (she even has bomber miniatures in her room). If someone talk shit about the TIE bomber, she'll go full berserk. She is also the only known bomber pilot to fly her bomber like if it was an agile interceptor. She got her scar by hurting herself opening a closet, but keep it and pretend it was during a skirmish against 12 x-wings. She keep pushing for having custom stuff on her bomber and, with Neel's antics, she is basically the nightmare of the flight boss. Also, someone keep sending her chocolate boxes (Neel). The TIE interceptor pilot is wing commander Rosh. He was a merc before joing the imperial navy. He is probably the best pilot on the fleet, but he generally prefer to keep his tought for himself. People are constantly asking him for tips, but he just give very basic stuff like "don't get shot". He is the dude that got the most fruit from Gaunt and people don't seem to memorize his name That's from the official character chart from the vid.

@@mikapoful Fans don't ruin Star Wars just because they complain. If someone doesn't like something that doesn't mean "Oh yeah they're the cause of the problem", clearly what they're complaining about is the reason for their complaints in the first place.
@@esorkgonzalez2262 I did not mean that. I meant that they ruin it for themselves by looking for things to hate about new movies. There is nothing wrong about telling your own opinion. I don't really like that people complaining about Disney in video that has nothing to do with Disney. It's a little annoying for me.
Imagine being such a badass that you fly a bomber like an interceptor
Well, TIE-bomber quite agile for his class, and barrage of guuided missiles is really good argument against shield-leaning opponents. This could well become a mass tactic.
Look, if only Thrawn didn't disappear during the Liberation of Lothal, the TIE Defenders will soon replace the shitty regular TIE Fighters. The TIE Defenders has shield as strong as TIE Bombers, but as fast as TIE Interceptors. Basically that's like the Empire now has it own A-Wing starfighters, instead of a bunch of annoying space mosquitoes without hyperdrive and proper shield
@@theasianboy315 Actually I'm pretty sure that tie fighters weren't all that bad. Sure they had their faults, but the fact that tie fighters did not have shields was in a way also a plus. It trained imperial pilots to simply not get hit. Which made the average imperial tie pilot one of the best in the galaxy. Correct me if I'm wrong
@@Foundation_Specialist the empire will call anything elite if it works for them in a lot of cases elite soldiers are just glorified Stormtroopers or regular Storm troopers for that matter
@@Foundation_Specialist also the ties themselves were pretty bad compared to the x-wings and most other ships in the history of Star Wars. The pilots had to compensate somewhat but that did not make them anywhere near best in the galaxy. That would discount general/admiral/captain syndulla who has a really tricked out ship but is still one of the best in the Galaxy regardless. Tie pilots are not on her level
When you delete plot armour.
As a veteran TIE Fighter player I like you put the game's elements in there. And of course the best way to tell a story is just to show it. No annoying ambiguous misleading text. Just pictures. They say more than a thousand words after all.

So does the rebellion
Astrid Nipflake I'd suggest reading the novel "lost stars" then. It delves into 2 Imperial cadets going through training and combat etc. and it's fantastic!

TIE Interceptor pilot: the grizzled old veteran. Trying to lead the best way he can: by example. Hates, but respect his enemy. Sees a lot of himself in.. TIE fighter pilot: the brash, young, hot shot. Pushes it to the edge. Always out to impress. Has eye for... TIE bomber pilot: the cold, stoic, loner. The scar on her face tells her story. Feels like she has to do it better than everyone or be judged as "just a woman". nailed it.

Nick C I like my women strong. She's strong me likey, likey.

This is the perfect example of why the rebels had to hide their bases and fleets The empire was just to powerful and well trained, if they had their main base exposed, the rebels would have to run Almost all rebellions that attempted to openly start a war was crushed, the empire is perfect for all out war That is why the rebels rely on hit and run attacks, that is why every loss is a major blow to the rebels, and that is how they are able to score victories
Even the old canon followed this. After the Empire lost and was scattered; They were still a threat because of Thrawn who adapted and perfected the Rebel's hit and run startegy, he would've conquered the Galaxy again. The new canon just doesn't have this sense of danger for the Resistance, eventhough they are supposedly outnumbered, they crack jokes, and even trashes the New Order in space battles. Not to mention the New Order seems way too incompetent.
@@boxtupos7718 I fully agree. The First Order is supposedly a major remnant faction of the Empire. They should be comprised of some of the most loyal and experienced soldiers, pilots, and commanders from the Empire. On the flipside, the resistance should be made up of people who respect and understand that the Empire was no joke to contend with, nor should any splinter group. Instead the new trilogy is a bunch of goofballs and idiots who play around like it's all one big party (right up until someone important to the movie canon dies). It's a stupid mess. Even after the First Order unleashes their super weapon and blows up half a dozen major rebel/resistance/republic/whatever plants, it's still treated like a silly saturday morning cartoon romp. The 'bad guys' are fighting like they're standing for something. Meanwhile the new rebels are fighting like it's a temp job. Like it's no big deal. When Luke and rebel squadron were launching against the Death Star, that was heavy shit. They were way out gunned, and way out numbered. It was almost by sheer luck that they won. Now all the main characters treat the whole thing like it's a fucking game. You get short cuts of nameless mooks behaving like it's the dawn of D-Day, but everyone important is all lackadaisical and playing around. They flail their arms and shout like they're on a roller-coaster. It's fucking stupid. And of course the execs of Disney expect you to love it as much as the OT was.
@@buttlord2223 The thing that pisses me off the most is the loss of the basics of physics. The ship running out of fuel will not really work, since they are in space, the ship will not lose its momentum because there is nothing stopping it. So it'll become an endless chase. And the bigger ship, with the bigger thruster should move faster, because although there is mass, there is no weight or any other force going against the bigger ship, there is no drag. Aaahhh.... pisses me off
@@boxtupos7718 I typed out a big giant essay on why physics shouldn't be a major concern and youtube fucked it up. Basically large scale battles in SW are WW2 battles. Space combat is naval combat, with star destroyers and death stars being battleships and aircraft carriers. X and Y wings are fighters and torpedo bombers. AT-ATs are tanks. Hoth is probably some battle straight out of WW2, but the attack on the first Death Star is definitely the battle of midway. basically my point was that physics and real world science take a back seat to the theatrics and storytelling of a battle. It's why that stupid admiral lady's hyperspace ram is so fucking garbage - she uses semi believable real world physics and knowledge to obliterate an entire fleet, and also make every single battle prior completely pointless.
@@buttlord2223 Oh that's ok, but they treat it as the ship will stop in the vacuum of space because it runs out of fuel and will suddenly lose all its momentum just because(?) It's so dumb, that I can't just unsee it. Even in a fictional setting, specially a Sci-fi setting, the vacuum of space is still pretty much going to be that a vacuum. Not to mention it's so basic, that it stands out. And as you mentioned they've used FTL travel as an offensive attack; Which is stupid because in Star Wars going to Lightspeed just sends you to Hyperspace. So they manage to ignore basic physics and lore. Now if rewatch the other movies, I can't help but think, just do a lightspeed bombardment. Create weapons with lightspeed technology.
The billions Disney has spent and still this is just so much better.
This is perfect. I like how the rebel targeting systems, star destroyer gunners and even now the TIE Bomber is less maneuverable than the other TIEs.
Got to the half-way point, and was like, "Holy shit... I need a moment." I feel like I just ran a goddamn marathon, and this marathon had space ships, explosions, tasty guitar licks, and badassery. After watching the rest, I can officially declare this the best seven and a half minutes I've ever wasted on KZhead. Even if I COULD get that time back, I wouldn't want to. It was fucking worth it.

The interdictor using it's interdictor field to scramble missiles was a nice touch.
A lot of this is referencing to the various games. The Interdictor's missile-scrambling party trick coming from the Empire at War strategy games. Meanwhile the heads-up-displays, cockpit layouts, and that PTSD-inducing missile warning come from the TIE-Fighter/X-Wing sims.

The Rebellion only won battles in the films because they have plot armor and dumb luck. Also, A-Wings and B-Wings were not a part of the Rebellion's arsenal until after this battle.

Marcel Worschech Nope. Tie Interceptors were probably already in development when the Death Star was destroyed.
To be fair the Rebel group looked out numbered, tired and already damaged.
All that whining won't make the ANIMATION ITSELF inaccurate. Second, your another commentor here complaining that the rebels "should have had A and B wing fighters" yeah no. The Rebels had what the rebels had. Either this was early in the rebellion or these poor saps simply did not have those fighters on hand - hell for all we know they were on their way to GET SAID FIGHTERS at a rally location, while unloading whatever was in those transports. Also, whatever reason rebel pilots were superior on average is irrelevant here - for all you know all these pilots were the freshest bunch they had, and the TIE pilots were a squadron of ace-pilots - you do know the Empire had several of those, right? TIE's die easily, those who don't live longer to see more battles, and perhaps learn a thing or two, and those that do eventually get to pilot Interceptors because those are better fighters - hell top-aces in the Empire got to fly Defenders, a craft that was superior to nearly everything the rebels had. Lucky for them those were rare, and I may as well mention, were not in this battle, likely for the same reason the A and B wings were not. With all of that said: Enjoy it for what it is; fan-made animation, and legendary quality animation at that, given the 1-man development. It does not always have to be yet another victory for the rebels.
The switching between helmet and face is so clever Im surprised that ive never seen any studios do it.
