The Treasure of the Atocha Arrives at the Dock, 1985

After the July 20, 1985 discovery of the cargo hold of the Spanish 1622 galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha, the Treasure Salvors, Inc. vessel Dauntless returned to its home port of Key West, Florida with a large load of silver bars and chests of silver coins recovered in the first excavations at the shipwreck site. John and Judy Halas were at the dock and videotaped the Dauntless’ arrival and the unloading of the newly-discovered Atocha treasure. A copy of that video was donated to the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society Archives and is presented here.

  • Truly another era. Grubby boat, derelict pick-up, butts and beer everywhere, no cops or archo nuts anywhere. Can we go back to 1985 ?

  • I was only in 5th grade when my teacher showed us this National Geographic documentary about Mel Fisher and the Nuestra Señora de Atocha. I'm glad that he won that battle with the US government. Cause the gold would of probably of been metaled down and we wouldn't see it ever again. Thank you for sharing a part of my history(I'm decedent from the Spanish who settled in St. Augustine Florida.)

  • Steve Candela, who owns Key West Welding and is driving the crane was an early supporter of Mels'. He ended up with one of the cannons in his yard. He actually collects cannons and that was one of my first jobs for TS.

    • Don't listen to the haters that probably can't afford a real Atocha pendant! I too am wearing one of the two reale coins recovered by this crew! It's a grade one and comes with a signed COA from Mel Fisher himself dated from 1986 and has my coin pictured on it along with it's weight. Very cool stuff!

  • Does anyone know if this is from July 20th, 1985...the actual day that Kane and the crew found the mother lode after 16 years of searching? If so, they could not find Mel that day as he had gone out shopping and no one knew where he was. There were no cell phones back then so they had an announcement placed on the local radio which Mel heard and ran back to the shop. Kane told him to tear up the maps...we found it! Can you just imagine that day! After 16 years of searching, losing a son and daughter in law, and everything else Mel went through. Today, they are still pulling treasure from the ship and there still is another half billion unfound! Unreale!!...LOL!
