After the July 20, 1985 discovery of the cargo hold of the Spanish 1622 galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha, the Treasure Salvors, Inc. vessel Dauntless returned to its home port of Key West, Florida with a large load of silver bars and chests of silver coins recovered in the first excavations at the shipwreck site. John and Judy Halas were at the dock and videotaped the Dauntless’ arrival and the unloading of the newly-discovered Atocha treasure. A copy of that video was donated to the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society Archives and is presented here.
Truly another era. Grubby boat, derelict pick-up, butts and beer everywhere, no cops or archo nuts anywhere. Can we go back to 1985 ?
1985?...I wish
In my mind, I'm still there.
Its 2024 and I'm still enjoying it all. I to have a nice pendant and get lots of compliments when I wear it. Hope to see them find the Captains Srern with the best of the best!! Ty Beebe
I love how Mel was going to give the state of Florida some then they wanted it all. *AND GOT NONE LOL!!!*
Love that for them
Hahaha! First thing they did when they hit port!! Pass out the Budweiser!! 😂 the good ole days son!
😂😂😂😂
American owned then, too. Great times.
Now that's a great video Thank You for posting it... I new there was a video of this somewhere out there... I bet there is more too...Keep em coming PLEASE!
Ive got one of those babies around my neck!
Me too!! I feel so honored to own and wear such an amazing piece of history.
Great Video! Thanks for sharing!!
I was only in 5th grade when my teacher showed us this National Geographic documentary about Mel Fisher and the Nuestra Señora de Atocha. I'm glad that he won that battle with the US government. Cause the gold would of probably of been metaled down and we wouldn't see it ever again. Thank you for sharing a part of my history(I'm decedent from the Spanish who settled in St. Augustine Florida.)
Silver
My wife's uncle is with this crew - he just passed but before he did he shared some pretty cool stories with her family.
No he wasn’t actually but of course people like you with their outrageous claims always seem to find their way to these comment sections.
@@ssherrierable huh? Do you know me or my wife's uncle? Were you a member of the crew? This is such a weird thing to say to someone you don't know...and why on earth would I lie about this?
I just finished the book. This is so cool to see. Wish that I could have been there!!!
So amazing...how incredible it must be to have been a part of that!
The best i ever seen❤🎉
Steve Candela, who owns Key West Welding and is driving the crane was an early supporter of Mels'. He ended up with one of the cannons in his yard. He actually collects cannons and that was one of my first jobs for TS.
I am, as I type, wearing a necklace made from some of those silver bars. It's a pendant of the Atocha made from its silver 😊
Its probally fake.. im sorry
Don't listen to the haters that probably can't afford a real Atocha pendant! I too am wearing one of the two reale coins recovered by this crew! It's a grade one and comes with a signed COA from Mel Fisher himself dated from 1986 and has my coin pictured on it along with it's weight. Very cool stuff!
Got a ring
I too had a piece of eight but foolishly gave it to a man I USED to date
Just got mine too so cool
My Dad met Mel Fisher in Dallas TX back in the 60s at his Metal Detector Shop. This is what I was told by my Dad. Can anyone out there confirm that Mel Fisher had a Metal Detector Shop in Dallas?
This is very satisfying
I love this stuff.....to me, this is just about as wonderful as the King Tut treasure. .........those coins start at about 3-5k EACH for the more worn away ones and up to 20-50k EACH for the really nice ones.
and there are thousands and thousands of them.
I have a Grade 1 - 8 reales around my neck 24/7.
Epic discovery!
Wow thank you this is history, I have the magazines but its not same thing. Totally amazing
Why are Atocha coins and silver so scarce and pricey but El Cazador coins are very available and affordable?
Very cool video. I want that silver! 😜
My parents took me there in 1985 right after Seniora de atohca was discorverd!!! I'm from Michigan, so that was quite a road trip by car. I remember my dad actually meeting Mel, and he put a huge gold chain and Cross around my dad's neck for a picture!!!! Bucket list goal is to go back
They are still working the site... And still hiring!
Does anyone know if this is from July 20th, 1985...the actual day that Kane and the crew found the mother lode after 16 years of searching? If so, they could not find Mel that day as he had gone out shopping and no one knew where he was. There were no cell phones back then so they had an announcement placed on the local radio which Mel heard and ran back to the shop. Kane told him to tear up the maps...we found it! Can you just imagine that day! After 16 years of searching, losing a son and daughter in law, and everything else Mel went through. Today, they are still pulling treasure from the ship and there still is another half billion unfound! Unreale!!...LOL!
Sweet! I have a feeling some went missing. No security but the keystone cops.
some where made from melted coins, all stuck together....amazing
Gold is mine
I bought a pendant from this shipwreck it’s so wicked cool
To think they were so close 10 years earlier what a find , these days forget it
Poor people who died on that that ship 😔
Gold and Silver from the High Uintah Mountains in Utah
Hard to believe that divers, where the ability to get a breath is so crucial, would be so into cigarettes.
What about the gold that is still out there,, are they looking for it?like 20 tons ?
It's what dreams are made of...
hoping to join the crew in 2 years when I retire from public safety diving.Any current employees have recommendations or advice for me?

Yeah, don’t quit your day job is the best advice I can offer…
Yeah. I think/ since I was a Kid, Your taught in believing, if you find treasure it’s, Finders-Keepers. But that’s definitely not the case of some of these finds.
What are those corrosion gray blocks?
Silver ingots
Where’s Mel?
Todo español
This is what it was all about
How big of a news story was this when it first happened?
Idk but I would have done everything in my power to keep it a secret. I would have brought back some scrap metal and hid all that booty below deck. NDA agreements would have been signed first and we would have figured it out alone. The government tried to rob them and lost thankfully…
Huge
Wonder where is security in all of this. Someone can get whacked over the head and grab a gold bar.
That ls now.. then was a different story
Most of the time though they never find anything, so pirates would have a heck of a time waiting around. Plus guys willing to work that hard for find treasure probably would not be the type to play possum.
@David miorgan agreed!!.
You wouldn’t make it 10 ft and someone would shoot you with a spear gun. Lol
OK👍
who wears short shorts? These guys do
not a slay-queen or girl boss in site. just men drinking bud heavies and the women taking pictures and chatting. god i miss the 80's!
What’s a slay queen

ALL OF THOSE COINS ARE MADE IN POTOSÍ, BOLIVIA! IT'S A TREASURE MADE WITH BLOOD
Was Mel a greedy bastard or did he make sure everyone helping on the ship became a millionaire?
