Through Deaf Eyes explores almost 200 years of Deaf life in America and presents a broad range of perspectives on what it means to be deaf. The film is propelled by the stories of people, both eminent and ordinary, and sheds light on events that have shaped Deaf lives.
The companion book is available at gupress.gallaudet.edu/Books/T...
Content Warning
Through Deaf Eyes references the 1927 film, The Jazz Singer, because it was the first movie to incorporate synchronized music and speech, and its release heralded the end of the silent film era. For deaf audiences, the film was significant because it represented the end of access to Hollywood movies. Through Deaf Eyes contains a clip from The Jazz Singer that features an actor in blackface. The timestamp in which this clip appears is 32:57-33:06.
The use of blackface was racist and offensive in 1927, and it is racist and offensive now. Gallaudet University Press does not condone the use of blackface or any other acts of anti-Black behavior.

    • Excellent movie. I used KZhead live captions OK. I don't understand why other social media has no live captions? We need a disability (ability) revolution here in Australia. I have a cochlear and have been deaf for 6 years. It is exhausting fitting in and trying to hear things in social situations. I don't think it's fair to not teach and provide sign language to cochlear, and non-cochlear, wearing deaf people. Why would you deny them such a fantastic tool, in the toolbox, of surviving and living in a hearing world? If you grow up with cochlear implants you may not realise how much harder you have to work each day to communicate. The burden is completely on you.

  • I heard Moshe Kasher talking about deaf history on the JRE, I came here to learn more. After watching this, I’m even more fascinated and impressed by deaf culture. In a time when victimhood is a currency, it’s refreshing to encounter a group of people who don’t fall for that trap. The Gallaudet students that occupied the campus, are straight up national treasures. I personally benefitted from their tenacity as I needed ADA accommodation in college.

  • Much of this documentary still holds today. The history is like most with struggles and triumphs, but it's a little disheartening to see that we haven't evolved that much since. So much misinformation out there with many people finding it easier to be cruel than kind. I wish that I had a magic wand that would make people understand that our differences are what make us so interesting!!!!! Imagine how boring it would be if we were all the same? I think ASL (and other sign languages) are elegant, beautiful, expressive, and it's taught me a lot as an autistic person.

  • Ironically it is now seen as a very effective way for young children to communicate with their parents, speech takes a long time to emerge in a child, even if the child is hearing. I always tell people I am normal, I just speak a different dialect of English.

  • When I was a child, I had a Sunday School teacher with a deaf daughter, and our teacher taught us a little sign language. Because of this, I was able to communicate with a group of deaf women I met while camping with my family as a teenager. I was singing to myself in the camp bathroom, and these ladies thought I might be talking to them, so they got my attention and asked me what I was saying. I could tell, of course, that they were deaf, so I just smiled and said, "I was just signing!" while signing the word "sing" or "music". They smiled and nodded, obviously surprised and delighted that I knew an appropriate sign to communicate with them, and that I didn't act awkward at all. I didn't miss a beat, didn't treat them any differently from anyone else.

  • I was born premature at 24 weeks and was tested for hearing loss. During the test, I didn’t respond. Eventually i ended up getting fluid drained from my ear drum which fixed it. Sometimes i wonder what would have happened if was born deaf. when i was a baby, my parents used a bit of sign language just for visual learning stuff. My parents say that the first time my sister tried ice cream she used the sign “more! More!” This video helped a lot. Ive had deaf people in my classes and presenters have come in to inform us of what hearings aids are like in elementary school. Ive also watched shows with deaf characters that stuck with me too. Im a hearing person but i have a lot of respect for the deaf community and am considering learning ASL.
