Craig Monson, first started lifting weights in 1962 when he was 12, and was considered one of the most muscular guys in Los Angeles during his late teens in the late 1960s.
From 1967 to 1970 he worked out in his back yard, and his close neighborhood friend's garage, during this era. Future Crip founder, Raymond Washington, got his start in weightlifting hanging around Craig Monson and other Avenues.
When Craig he arrived at Tracy and San Quentin prisons after a 1970 arrest for murder, he was already the largest inmate on the yard. When he got out of prison, he decided to compete as a bodybuilder and throughout the 1980s he competed several times.
This video shows Craig Monson working out at City Gym in Los Angeles located on Figueroa where the Staples Center currently stands.

  • I trained and slept at this Gym in the eighties. I had no family and no support and nowhere to go. Diego Burgos the owner and Julio the manager were more than family to me at that time in my life. Craig Monson what can I say was a true source of inspiration and admiration for everyone there and at Venice Beach no matter what background they may have come from. I was in my early twenties and would sometimes laugh at all the grunts and noises he would make during these brutal workout sessions. Craig was so big and so strong he would make mere workout sessions for him into an actual mind boggling event and an eye opening experience for everyone else.

  • This is what happens when somebody is born with raw power and has the will to develop strength! This man's Feats of Strength which to him were no big deal he would just call it Tuesday where and still are amazing! I saw an interview with him and CT Fletcher where big Munson said he tried steroids but it wasn't for him. That's right ladies and gentlemen this man was natural and his strength was given to him by God!

Just football players, athletes, thugs, and wanna-be's like me working out together doing crazy feats of strength (AND we all knew good form!). No BS, no pretentiousness, no fancy workout clothes. No such things as carrying around shakes and pre-workout and all that. No plastic/rubberized plates and crossfit stuff. Just workin out hard, pumping iron! Brotherhood back then.
