  • Physicist here. While many of the more recent UFO videos are not very clear (as in the 1990s), they are certainly different, as their sources are more respectable: videos from military sources. However, e.g. the case of triangular craft on night vision cameras can indeed be drones, I use infrared scopes at work and it's hard to know where to focus the image if you don't quite know the distance to the object. And yes, some diffraction patterns can distort the image. Beyond that I couldn't say anything, as you need more data. Usually an image is not enough to say that something is something. On the other hand the videos coming from military aircraft are still from night vision cameras and also moving at hundreds of kilometers per hour! If you have seen NASA videos taken from airplanes, you will see that it is difficult to assume what is the position and speed of the object. And this is because of problems with parallax, that is, the relative velocity of the object according to its background, and it can be confusing. This 4-hour video deals precisely with these interpretation failures due to parallax. It is similar to when from a car we see an airplane, about to land, stop in the air. It is not that the plane is stopped, what happens is that the relative movements of both (the plane and the car) are such that they make the plane seem motionless. And yes, we need a lot more boring explanations. And in turn, we need ordinary people to look at the sky again, in an educated way at typical atmospheric phenomena and astronomical objects, so that they do not fall into easy ways out. And if it is necessary to say, I don't know, not to feel ashamed for looking for a boring explanation, which if we apply Ockam's razor, surely is the most plausible one.

    @ceber54@ceber5412 күн бұрын
    • Thanks for the input. I have been pretty interested in the subject since 2017 after the New York Times article. But I'm like you looking for a simple explanation. I don't believe but also have a opened mind. I don't even know if I want it to be true because what would that even mean for the future?

      @germangru@germangru12 күн бұрын
    • @@germangru when is the last time you supported views of someone who had a picnic in a park? The way I see it a protest will split the undecided mass, so certainly some (sometimes most) of them will turn against the protesters, but I doubt there's another way. But I think it's interesting to think about how exactly the people will make their decision. Often times when I talk to people about protests, they seem to be concerned mostly about the form of the protest. Like if that was the main point. For example, it often goes like this: people are concerned about safety and environmental (both local and global) impact of SUV's in cities. They feel that this issue is urgent. They go out and block some streets. Later I talk to people and even though some will acknowledge problems with SUV's, they seem to fall back on "but those protesters did that thing" and fail to see how "that thing" is negligible when compared to all the problems they are trying to prevent from happening. Ultimately everyone has to make their own decision but when it comes to protests we must learn to separate the form from the content (investigating *both* with critical thinking). If we to make that separation and process the information -- and ultimately make the decision -- in a healthy way we are doomed to shoot ourselves in the foot. Thing is, that separation and the processing of the information is crucial to our decision making and there's no way to avoid that. Protests are not actually causing this, they are merely escalating it.

That didn’t go through the extensive trials to make sure it is safe like they’ve done with all the others before it. These are the things that need to be declassified. According to cosplayers and fursuit enthusiasts, suits like that can take weeks to create and cost tens of thousands of dollars in material and potentially labor costs. Please, can we give props to the costuming department that made that suit? Because it looked amazing.

    @Tinmar_Isation@Tinmar_Isation10 күн бұрын
    • I don’t think it’s only that. Some will do anything to get on TV. However my grandfather was a high ranking official for the navy. He’s told me that not only has he seen these objects in the sky and water. But the government across the world are actively suppressing it by any means. They had to sign a NDA once they saw them. This was on multiple occasions. I think the reason why America seems obsessed. Is because in America you can look like a fool with little shame, while people in other countries try to avoid that shame.

It's not about whether it's aliens or not; it's about the fact people *do* see things they don't understand and we shouldn't shame each other for looking for answers and coming up with hypothesis. Even the aliens explanation is a valid hypothesis, since we really don't know for sure. • Makes more sense than you think. If we finally manage to sent human beings to another planet, we'll certainly ... okay, almost certainly, but I hope very much we'll make sure the planet is safe before we actuall have humans land on it. Like: toxins, or worse, potentially harmful germs in the atmosphere. Any intelligent life form who managed to develop to the point of interstellar flight would have to be at last as careful & rational as human beings, or more so, to avoid killing itself off once it has the technology to do so. (We've amply proven that getting to that point of technology is a lot easier than getting to the point of interstellar travel.) And then of course there's the ever popular theory that alien life is still in two minds of wether making contact with homo sapiens sapiens is _really_ a good idea. You never know how catching exactly madness is.

  • The saddest (and scariest) part about aliens is that there's basically only two theories about it and none of them are very promising: 1) We really are completely alone in the universe, or at least we are the only planet that scientists know about (from all the can tell with today's technology, which is a lot) that has the perfect conditions for life 2) We are NOT alone, but whatever else is out there is so, SO far away that it's practically impossible for us to even know of each others existence, because even IF we could travel at the speed of light, it would still take billions of years to get there, and that's a time our own sun doesn't have, and he'll still be here after we go extinct (which will happen in a few hundred years if we keep treating the planet the way we are).

    @zez_gval@zez_gval11 күн бұрын
    • Even if aliens existed and had the tech to travel here, there are so many variables that have to line up flawlessly to make that even begin to happen. It's like a lottery. Also the observable universe is expanding away from us and slipping forever from out reach day by day so if they are too far away, they will never not be. So that's...Unsatisfying. And the very idea of "perfect conditions for life" is a silly one. The conditions for life down here have never been perfect. They've _been_ but that's not at all the same.

And is on the rise again with heightened would tension. And in 2024 everyone has a smartphone with a video camera and yet there are precious few videos and those that exists are of very poor quality. If the encounters were as frequent as some suggest, KZhead would be flooded with high quality videos.

People protesting in the streets make common people late for work and steal their time with their families, stop people from getting medical aid, make people burn more fossil fuels or prevent them from picking up their drunk friends before they decide to sit behind the wheel themselves, but luckily enough they wont be able to go anywhere, because the protest is blocking traffic, so i guess it eventually lead to something good.
