"You're thinking of Religion"-joke starting at @24.10 is such a brilliantly visious and perfectly delivered truth-joke. Something that you simply just have to applaud.
The laugh of that woman when he says "Deep Mouths" is both hilarious and disturbing! 😂😂
She was imagining several distressing scenarios
I absolutely adore the fact that that joke is exactly, precisely, accurately at the 50% mark of the video. Just hit 5 on your keyboard and you'll be at John saying "mouths"
Physicist here. While many of the more recent UFO videos are not very clear (as in the 1990s), they are certainly different, as their sources are more respectable: videos from military sources. However, e.g. the case of triangular craft on night vision cameras can indeed be drones, I use infrared scopes at work and it's hard to know where to focus the image if you don't quite know the distance to the object. And yes, some diffraction patterns can distort the image. Beyond that I couldn't say anything, as you need more data. Usually an image is not enough to say that something is something. On the other hand the videos coming from military aircraft are still from night vision cameras and also moving at hundreds of kilometers per hour! If you have seen NASA videos taken from airplanes, you will see that it is difficult to assume what is the position and speed of the object. And this is because of problems with parallax, that is, the relative velocity of the object according to its background, and it can be confusing. This 4-hour video deals precisely with these interpretation failures due to parallax. It is similar to when from a car we see an airplane, about to land, stop in the air. It is not that the plane is stopped, what happens is that the relative movements of both (the plane and the car) are such that they make the plane seem motionless. And yes, we need a lot more boring explanations. And in turn, we need ordinary people to look at the sky again, in an educated way at typical atmospheric phenomena and astronomical objects, so that they do not fall into easy ways out. And if it is necessary to say, I don't know, not to feel ashamed for looking for a boring explanation, which if we apply Ockam's razor, surely is the most plausible one.
Thanks for the input. I have been pretty interested in the subject since 2017 after the New York Times article. But I'm like you looking for a simple explanation. I don't believe but also have a opened mind. I don't even know if I want it to be true because what would that even mean for the future?
I have a master's degree in psychology. I have seen ghosts. I know that they don't exist, that there is no solid evidence of their existence at all, and that there are PLENTY of good explanations why some of us see them... but I've seen them. ;)
Alien here. No its us, trust me.
Thank you. The goose flying in the "ufo" feed is a good example of that. We should all remember what UFO is short for.
Great comment! I just want to add that I hope the scientists that get to study this phenomena really don't get there with pre existing assumptions. Like, for real. Way too many scientists have mottos like "it's never aliens", even for weird astronomical and astrophysical phenomena, and just kicking out an hypothesis beforehand is not scientific.

"If a protest doesn't inconvenience, it's not a protest; it's a picnic"
Protest should inconvenience those who are in charge of the thing you are protesting against. if you are inconvenience to regular people who have nothing to do with whatever grief you have, you are just asshole.
but doesn't it makes ir harder to get support? if you get out or your way to make random people feel worse you won't get sympathy for the cause, just more people saying fuck palestine
@@germangru when is the last time you supported views of someone who had a picnic in a park? The way I see it a protest will split the undecided mass, so certainly some (sometimes most) of them will turn against the protesters, but I doubt there's another way. But I think it's interesting to think about how exactly the people will make their decision. Often times when I talk to people about protests, they seem to be concerned mostly about the form of the protest. Like if that was the main point. For example, it often goes like this: people are concerned about safety and environmental (both local and global) impact of SUV's in cities. They feel that this issue is urgent. They go out and block some streets. Later I talk to people and even though some will acknowledge problems with SUV's, they seem to fall back on "but those protesters did that thing" and fail to see how "that thing" is negligible when compared to all the problems they are trying to prevent from happening. Ultimately everyone has to make their own decision but when it comes to protests we must learn to separate the form from the content (investigating *both* with critical thinking). If we to make that separation and process the information -- and ultimately make the decision -- in a healthy way we are doomed to shoot ourselves in the foot. Thing is, that separation and the processing of the information is crucial to our decision making and there's no way to avoid that. Protests are not actually causing this, they are merely escalating it.
@@germangru how do you think you got every single right you enjoy?

That didn’t go through the extensive trials to make sure it is safe like they’ve done with all the others before it. These are the things that need to be declassified. But that’s just crazy talk, the government doesn’t experiment on its own citizens. There’s no examples of that in our history whatsoever.🤔 Everyone knows the government goes to war for profit already.

Am i the only one that find racists "fighting against anti- semitism" a bit oxymoronic?
Does it help that they are putting up a bad pretense of fighting against it?
Hypocritical is probably the better word. They do this all the time, and usually wha5ever they accuse others of, they are far worse transgressors. MTG lead8ng censure of Rashia Tlaib for antisemitism was ic8ng on cake, recall Greene was the one who publicly tweeted that Jews were using Space Lasers to start wildfires and destroy America. That wad 1 year ago btw now she's the self appointed defender of Jews 😅
They don't actually care about anti-Semitism. They care about Israel, and many of the politicians in the US care about Israel because of the evangelical vote. The people that conflate anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiment are disingenuous fools.
Honestly, if your protest has the goal to inconvenience normal people, you are doing something wrong. Inconvenience those in power who can actually stop the crisis, not people rushing to work who just want to make a living.

I know that in the season finale John is gonna mention these videos being uploaded in full for people outside the USA in order to prove a point about how foreigners are overinformed about the USA or something like that. Wouldn't it be funny then to show that a foreigner was able to tell this was your plan from the very beginning?

The real question is: Why Americans are the only ones in the world to be so obessed by UFOs? Because they would do anything to be on TV!
I don’t think it’s only that. Some will do anything to get on TV. However my grandfather was a high ranking official for the navy. He’s told me that not only has he seen these objects in the sky and water. But the government across the world are actively suppressing it by any means. They had to sign a NDA once they saw them. This was on multiple occasions. I think the reason why America seems obsessed. Is because in America you can look like a fool with little shame, while people in other countries try to avoid that shame.
I can’t take John seriously anymore when he completely ignores the elephant in the room - the rampant antisemitism and violence (especially against Jews) at these protests

John Oliver has, after all, described his show as "basically a petting zoo with a desk".
So asking a potential future justice whether he believes if Israel has a right to exist in wrong? Shouldn't that be an incredibly easy answer, unless he is extremely racist? And if he is extremely racist, why does John want him as a judge?

Tackling UFOs on this show was quite a surprise. I'm very much on board with everything Oliver said. It's not about whether it's aliens or not; it's about the fact people *do* see things they don't understand and we shouldn't shame each other for looking for answers and coming up with hypothesis. So an intelligent species would come from wherever they are ALL THE WAY to earth and not try to communicate with us but rather fly around at night?
Makes more sense than you think. If we finally manage to sent human beings to another planet, we'll certainly ... okay, almost certainly, but I hope very much we'll make sure the planet is safe before we actuall have humans land on it. Like: toxins, or worse, potentially harmful germs in the atmosphere. Any intelligent life form who managed to develop to the point of interstellar flight would have to be at last as careful & rational as human beings, or more so, to avoid killing itself off once it has the technology to do so. (We've amply proven that getting to that point of technology is a lot easier than getting to the point of interstellar travel.) And then of course there's the ever popular theory that alien life is still in two minds of wether making contact with homo sapiens sapiens is _really_ a good idea. You never know how catching exactly madness is.
If they can make it here, we're primitives to them. Interesting to study, preferably while kept in the dark, so as to not affect our natural behavior too much. Don't think so highly of yourself, great ape.
The guy at the airport didn't say they shouldn't protest, just that shouldn't block airports and make people miss flights. You can't get a ticket refunded if you miss your flight due to traffic. Plane tickets are expensive. WTF

The saddest (and scariest) part about aliens is that there's basically only two theories about it and none of them are very promising: 1) We really are completely alone in the universe, or at least we are the only planet that scientists know about (from all the can tell with today's technology, which is a lot) that has the perfect conditions for life 2) We are NOT alone, but whatever else is out there is so, SO far away that it's practically impossible for us to even know of each others existence, because even IF we could travel at the speed of light, it would still take billions of years to get there, and that's a time our own sun doesn't have, and he'll still be here after we go extinct (which will happen in a few hundred years if we keep treating the planet the way we are).
Even if aliens existed and had the tech to travel here, there are so many variables that have to line up flawlessly to make that even begin to happen. It's like a lottery. Also the observable universe is expanding away from us and slipping forever from out reach day by day so if they are too far away, they will never not be. So that's...Unsatisfying. And the very idea of "perfect conditions for life" is a silly one. The conditions for life down here have never been perfect. They've _been_ but that's not at all the same.
Maybe that's why people are so fascinated by UFOs
The UFO craze holds all the hallmarks of social contagion. It exploded out of nowhere (relatively speaking) in 1947, grew under the paranoid Cold War, and then diminished during the 80s and 90s. And is on the rise again with heightened would tension. And in 2024 everyone has a smartphone with a video camera and yet there are precious few videos and those that exists are of very poor quality. If the encounters were as frequent as some suggest, KZhead would be flooded with high quality videos.
Only the term and specific figure. Aliens had been a topic for decades already in literature and even movies, but mainly as 'cigar' or sphere shapes. The TWISTER movie ushered a craze of storm chasers, just like Indiana Jones for Archeologists, but obviously it didn't materialize out of nothing. It just wasn't mainstream enough.

People protesting in the streets make common people late for work and steal their time with their families, stop people from getting medical aid, make people burn more fossil fuels or prevent them from picking up their drunk friends before they decide to sit behind the wheel themselves, but luckily enough they wont be able to go anywhere, because the protest is blocking traffic, so i guess it eventually lead to something good. Protesting has gone from brave acts of giving voice to the people in face of government oppression and an instrument of change to preventing a mom from going home to her kids.
...where do you think protestors at the Selma-Montgomery march were walking? In the woods? On the sidewalk? You can literally just google "Did the civil rights movement block traffic" and you will find that, yes, they in fact did. Same for the Vietnam protestors. So get your sanctimonious comparisons out of here.
Oh boo hoo. A mom can't go home to her kids for a bit longer than usual. What about all the kids in Gaza who's mothers won't be there to pick them up because she is DEAD. Or the mothers who can't pick their kids up because some racist fascist leader of another country decided to bomb the school. My heart pumps piss for anybody who felt put out because some protesters "inconvenienced" them for a small part of one day in their pathetic self centered lives. How inconvenienced do you think ALL the people in Gaza feel? WAR IS NOT HEALTHY FOR CHILDREN AND OTHER LIVING THINGS
You'd be the same person championing MLK Jr, who was a socialist btw, while saying these protesters are doing it wrong. Read Letter from Birmingham Jail.
